2 stars indicates that I have experienced better - in fact much better, and I was toying between 1 and 2 stars, electing 2 in the end, because of the fresh ingredients that I tasted.
But let's start from the beginning. I went to this place because someone recommended the place. I would not have picked this up as it is so near the tourist traffic which usually is a good indicator of mediocre food and high prices. Well, I should have followed my instincts, because it was exactly this. Overpriced and mediocre!
I have tried Chinese food in many places around the world including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, ny, London and San Francisco. This is not bragging. It is just the fact that in these places one can find examples of some of the best Chinese food in the world. In this context, and being in Paris, Diep was a great disappointment.
We start with Peking duck. 1/2 a duck foe E43 comprised of 6 slices of duck with 6 corresponding pieces of skin that was served to us immediately from the chicken - a sure sign of pre-prepared dish. Worse, they did not have the proper condiments (onion and cucumber) and I had to ask for it!!! Duck (the very little I tried) was ok. Just ok !!!
Next was steamed Dover sole with ginger. Another disappointment. While the fish was fresh, it was obvious that all they did was to steam the fish, wash it in soy sauce and throw in some ginger slices. Not even close to steamed fish with ginger and scallions with aromatic sesame oil that one finds one proper Chinese food places. A true waste of a good fish.
The shrimp with pepper that we ordered was not better. They had deep fried them, not stir fried, and washed them in an indifferent sauce with a few pepper pieces. This is a crime. To take these wonderful (and fresh) shrimps and fry them like this. And charge for the 4or 5 shrimps,E32!!!
The accompanying fried rice was no better. Lumpy and overlooked. The noodles that we ordered were also obviously bathed in soy sauce and although they were supposed to have vegetables in, they only had a few sprouts and one slice of mushroom!!! For heaves sake. It takes an effort to screw up a noodle dish!
They asked us if we wanted dessert, telling us that they were absolutely delicious. I asked if they were as delicious as their food :), and responding with yes, I passed on them
I would strongly recommend that this place is avoided at all costs and under any circumstances! read more
