We started engagement ring shopping at the Galleria with all your typical jewelry stores and were not impressed with any of the choices. Our last stop was Tiffany, where the sales must've thought we're too poor to afford it (LOL we are :P) and gave us a tip: Dickinson by Design. I never thought I would be able to go the custom jewelry route because it sounds expensive, but honestly it was the fairest price for the quality. And it made the ring experience fun! Shopping for a diamond was really daunting and stressful because of all the different specs, so I really appreciated how the DBD team took that on and even educated us along the way. We gave them our budget for the diamond and they came back with 3 choices for us to review and choose from. I was able to try on all 3 diamonds before deciding. From there we discussed band designs which were then created into 3D molds before we settled on the final product. The craft of the DBD team really shined (pun intended) when I got the ring. They really helped the diamond present itself in the best way. Everyone always comments how sparkly my ring is and the sparkle has been the same since Day 1. Only wish they offered more payment options (like cashier's check or something) since right now the only option is to wire money. I had 2 bespoke pieces made by this company. I lost one and tried to make an insurance claim. because it was bespoke and I wasn't given a valuation at the time i requested this valuation. After persistently chasing this up and getting beyond terrible customer service , including emailing the owner David., I have got nowhere. unfortunately a full year has passed and without this valuation my insurance company cannot proceed to process this claim. I have explained this numerous times to no avail. seems like once they have your money the customer service ends. Buyer beware! read more

For our 10 year anniversary, my husband and I wanted to remake the ring I had when we first got married. I had lost it a while back and wanted a replica of that ring, or at least something close. I got a consultation, gave our budget, they found the diamond, sapphires and ring within that budget! It was great. It came maybe $140 over for fees and appraisal. They only take wire or cashiers only, so please be mindful of that! One thing I learned from this experience is that if your jeweler does teach you about the basics of buying a diamond, then they're probably trying to take you on ride. Their son John Jr informed us that we could bring the rings anytime and have them cleaned and polished. Jr is now longer there and now they will not honor the agreement. They charged us to have the engagement ring polished. It's not the money, it's the principle. And instead of trying to work something out, their solution is to argue with me. We'll be looking elsewhere for our jewelry needs... Yes the engagement ring was purchased elsewhere, and resized by your company. John jr, your son, promised us we could have the engagement ring and the rings we purchased polished and cleaned at no charge. My fiance proposed at the beginning of May. I absolutely love my ring. I like gold so he got a yellow gold band with a white gold head. Absolutely beautiful cushion cut diamond ring!! I have gotten so many compliments already. I was in Tiffany's purchasing a gift and one of there sales people asked for his information since she loved my ring and wanted to pass his info to her boyfriend. My ring was a little too big at first and I took it to be resized the Monday after he proposed since I was headed out of town for a business trip. Looking for the right engagement ring became quite a stressful time for me and my then-fiancé. The big box stores didn't have the designs that we were looking for. It also felt like they would quickly categorize us once we told them our budget. We also tried a few online retailers, and while their service was better, surprisingly, their designs were also not exactly what we were looking for. I stumbled on Dickinson by Design while doing a local google search and we decided to at least go in for a consultation. For our consultation, we were helped by the founder of Dickinson. He was patient and quickly seemed to understand what we were looking for. He even called in his in-house designer and we started with some sketches right away. We made one slight modification to the initial sketches and then received our quote. We were very impressed by the value for the ring! We quickly moved forward and had our custom ring in about a month. Throughout the process, their customer specialist, Jackie, was extremely helpful and responsive! A year later we went through a similar process with our wedding bands. We didn't know exactly what we wanted for the bands so we started at big box stores. We quickly realized that again, their service and value just didn't seem good enough. We contacted Jackie, sent her our rough renderings, and we quickly got quotes. Again, very impressed and satisfied with the service, quality, and value. If you have a specific ring design in mind and you're willing to have some patience, I could not recommend Dickinson more! It's hard to know where to begin in writing this review for DBD. First of all, let me just say that this is an honest, genuine review in every way and I feel strongly compelled to share my experience with the rest of Houston! I recently worked with Lisa to design my stunning engagement ring. I actually discovered DBD on-line and what attracted me was their prices for platinum settings which seemed extremely reasonable. After e-mailing a photo of a gorgeous setting I found at a very high-end jewelry retailer here in Houston (not to be named, but starts with a "Z' and is at the corner of San Felipe/Post Oak), she sent me three successive CAD renderings. After tweaking a little bit, we got the design just right. The final price was HALF the price of the setting at the retail store AND twice the amount platinum....unbelievable! Not to mention, I got the most fabulous ring and NO ONE I know has anything remotely like it. I really can't say enough about the talent, expertise, and service offered by DBD. Their dedication and enthusiasm with my project was impressive and I look forward to working with them on the design of ny wedding band! Took two diamond tennis bracelets here to get sized a year ago. Should've written this review earlier. They charged me $300+ to size the bracelets and unfortunately one of my bracelets has been ruined ever since. I got home and took the bracelets out of the bag and saw one had diamonds missing. I notified them and they were able to replace the diamonds but this has happened repeatedly ever since. I've had to take it back in to get them replaced 3+ times and now I'm just tired of having to drive across town constantly to get it repaired. The diamonds always fall out shortly after I get it repaired and it's always the same 3 diamonds that fall out. I barely wear the bracelet anymore and it's very upsetting. This is not a matter of quality as I have 3 other bracelets from the same place, XIV Karats, and have never had any diamonds fall out of them, and I take extremely good care of them. My sister wears her bracelets from there daily and has never had any diamonds fall out. One woman here tried to tell me it was probably my doing and I probably hit it against something or it happened because I pair it with other bracelets when I wear it.... but I hadn't even worn it at that point as that was the first time it happened. As I had had luck in the past getting a ring sized and was referred to DBD by two different sales people, I thought they'd be able to help. Shortly after my bracelets were sized a pink gemstone had come out of the ring they sized for me. Haven't been able to wear that for over a year. Don't take your stuff here to get sized. I am shocked they haven't refunded me for the amount they charged me to get them sized. read more

I get compliments on my ring all the time and I have noticed that it is constantly catching people's eyes when I am having conversations with them. I admit that I tend to micro manage and I'm lucky that my fiance didn't mind my input in choosing the diamond for my engagement ring. Diamond shopping is a very daunting task and we were wary of buying online and wanted to get the most out of our money. Meeting John Jr. settled all our fears and he was awesome to work with! He stayed with in our budget and helped us figure out what type of diamond we wanted. We realized we were ok with "downgrading" in the clarity and going up in the color. This made a big difference in the quality of diamonds we could choose from (and all this was still within our budget). Not once did my fiance and I feel the pressure to go out of our budget and the diamond John found us was PERFECT (meeting all of the 4C's we had requested). I was in Tiffany & Co. in the Galleria purchasing a beautiful Art Deco style ring when I fell in love with a Tiffany & Co. engagement ring. The sales lady suggested that since I loved the setting so much that I should have an independent jeweler reset my existing ring and she recommended Dickinson By Design. I was quite impressed with John's facility as well as the customer service. I showed him the exact ring that I fell in love with at Tiffany's and he said he could use my existing center stone and recreate the Tiffany setting. He created computerized drawings for me to review with different views of the ring. The drawings all looked fine and I approved them. When I picked up the finished ring I realized that the setting was chunky and much heavier than the delicate Tiffany & Co. ring that I had shown John. I did not complain or create a fuss but I was disappointed in the finished product. It could have been a miscommunication/misunderstanding of sorts but it seems odd since I had shown him exact pictures of the Tiffany & Co. ring AND John previously worked at Tiffany's. If you put the two rings next to each other, you would never think that one was created to be like the other. Sadly, not ring I was hoping for. read more
