I have been going to this dermatology practice for over 25 years. My mom, a registered nurse herself, was actually the one that introduced me to the practice. I first visited the practice as a teenager for acne and now for fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation.... all the aesthetic skin issues! I can't say enough good things about the care I receive here. Carol and Noel are very skilled nurses that are sensitive to concerns and knowledgable about all things skin related. The whole office is very trustworthy. I moved to the peninsula years ago and still make the 1 1/2 drive to see them. They don't only handle aesthetics. I have brought my husband in for mole removal and my 4 year old son for wart removal on his foot. The quality of care provided here is rare. I can't recommend this place more. I have been a patient of Dr. Diana Parnell's for about 30 years and have always been happy with her advice and compassion. A few weeks ago I went to have her look at a red spot on my face and told her that I have not been feeling well, and that my hand was bothering me because it was swollen. She took one look and said "this is not normal", disappeared, and immediately ordered some blood tests, even though it had nothing to do with dermatology. She told me to contact my primary right away and I did and found out I have a rheumatological condition. Dr. Parnell removed a mole under my daughter's eye as well as one on her chin. She was kind, patient and efficient. Dr. Parnell did an excellent job, the mole was in a tricky location, it was completely removed and has healed beautifully. She is truly a brilliant physician. Unfortunately, I've had several bad experiences now with Dr. Parnell. Dr. Parnell was recommended to me by my general practitioner whom I love, and for that reason I have been back to her office several times now, hoping my experience would improve. No such luck! While Dr. Parnell is clearly very knowledgeable about dermatology and her prescriptions have been helpful, her personality is pushy and off-putting. Most recently, I went into her office looking for a prescription that would improve some mild eczema I had on my eyelids. The prescription itself took about a minute, and Dr. Parnell spent the rest of the fifteen minute appointment telling me that a $1200 laser surgery appointment could improve the "odd looking" redness on my cheeks. On another occasion she recommended laser hair removal for my "unusually dark arm hair". Each of these appointments cost me $100. Perhaps someone who has more money to spend than I would not have been so bothered by these remarks, but as an eighteen year old student I felt they were inappropriate. Additionally, Dr. Parnell's office does not bill directly to insurance, so customers must pay upfront. read more

I can't believe Dr. Parnell only has 2 stars!! She is absolutely the best!! My mother in law, sister in law, sister, and I have all been going to her for our skin care needs for over 30 years! She is absolutely caring, thorough, and super-experienced. She keeps up with all of the latest methods and training --- she's got dozens of certificates and degrees! She may be busy, but she always makes time for you. She even called in a prescription to a local pharmacist immediately for me when I was out of state and got a severe rash. My skin would have been severely scarred from acne had I not been using her YS products all these years. I've tried other skin care products, but never had anywhere near the beautiful results I've had with the products she and her husband (now a retired MD) formulated. She also helped clear up my son's acne, and did a lot to help reduce his scarring from it. I would highly recommend Dr. Parnell to anyone I know. read more

Beginning with teenage skin blemishes and progressing to the present time, wherein she has kept my face its absolute best, in conjunction with other relevant treatments. My mother and both of my sons also go the her and she has always provided excellent care to my family. You get what you pay for---she is relatively expensive. But it's your FACE! Can't skimp on that. Procedures she has performed for me: mole excision, Botox, Activ-FX, juvederm, radiesse, laser tattoo removal, and diagnosis/curing of minor skin problems. Every person I work with and all of my friends tell me that I look much younger than my age, because of how my facial skin appears. I rely upon Dr. Parnell to keep me looking younger and more vital than a person of my age would. I have been going to Diana Parnell for more than 40 years, mostly for actinic keratosis, and she has always been straight forward, interested and interesting. She works quickly and confidently. I have always been satisfied, never felt overcharged, go to her even though I have Kaiser. ACNE, DARK SPOTS, WRINKLEs? Where do I start!? I first met Dr. Parnell about 10 years ago I had lost some weight but my body was very straight I had no curves small hips and she sculpted my body I was shaped like a coca cola body it was amazing!! Well since then I had not gone into her office until about a year ago when I started getting really bad acne prescribed me pills as well as topical unfortunately I was not consistent with it so it didn't have much of an effect. One thing I've definitely learned is that you have to be consistent if you want something to work! It had nothing to do with her it was me and that was obvious when I return to her office six months later and again was prescribed the medication I was consistent this time and it worked like a charm my face completely cleared up she saw how desperate I was in my face had gotten worse she really wanted to help me and offered that I could come in to get injections in my sis on my face but just pay for the medication not for the cost of injecting and that's what I did she really wanted to help and I am very grateful. I wouldn't have been able to afford the injections full price but because she was willing to do this for me I was able to come in for injections and took my medication as well and my face is completely clear now I never imagined my skin could be so pretty!! Since then I've also been to her office for laser hair removal treatments, as well as laser tattoo removal which was amazing just after one treatment I already see such a big difference!! She's also been helping me with darkening that I have in my inner thighs thanks to her I've been able to lighten them a little bit the progress is slow but sure and I have had one laser treatment as well and will be doing another one in about a month. I read some of the reviews and I don't think it's true that she is very expensive or overcharges giving you the most expensive stuff if anything she's been very helpful and considerate to my situation she's always looked up the pharmacies that offer the medication at the least expensive price and has given me big discounts on my acne for example she wants to help!! When I first met Dr. Parnell she was a little serious but she's a professional she there to do her job now that I know her a little better she is so sweet and so kind and after seeing her generously I saw how much she cares! Every person I've ever talked to about her knows who she is she's good at what she does and I think at this point she is treating patients bc it's her passion ! She has been very successful in her career and I'm sure she could be vacationing if that's what she wanted to do but thankfully she's not she helping people take care of their skin! She knows what she's doing the key is that you be consistent in what your doing things don't happen over night you have to give it time for anyone with acne or dark spots she is amazing she cleared up my sons godmothers face who had these dark black spots all over her Nose and cheeks! She also helped my mom with her wrinkles so yea the initial fee might feel like a bit much but your seeing a dermatologist and you need to weight out the cost Whois you rather buy something cheap on TV and not even know if it works or see an actual doctor and not have to live with that horrible acne on your face! The reviews I'm seeing here are surprising to me, not the brusque part, Diana Parnell is busy and efficient so this can be interpreted as brusque, but incompetent? I went to see her after I was mauled on the face by the family dog (lol - true story, I stepped on his tail and he freaked - aging Aussie), not only did puppy tear my face open but left me with two (yes my boyfriend beats me) black eyes. It was Saturday in June and I went immediately to Marin General Emergency, where I waited around for 7 hours and got charged $15,000.00. They stitched me up, I guess without cleaning it properly and told me to ice it. Oops - wrong advice. Next day my face was swollen to grotesque proportions and I freaked out. It's a Sunday. I called Dr. Parnell's emergency line. She told me to come right down. Mom drove me. The dog stayed home. She assessed me 2 seconds and said, "No, ice is not good, in many cases it forces the toxins down." The wound had become grossly infected and my whole face was purple . Stitching animal bites is a crap shoot, usually best to leave them as they infect easily, she was neutral in her opinion and never condemned Marin General, but as for me, after that huge bill and the long wait and the very "who gives a rat's er, you know," I was not happy. She said in brusque but loving way (remember this is Sunday morning early and I'm freaked out), "don't worry, we can fix this." She removed the stitches, cleaned it out - that was not so fun - did some stuff and told me to do some other stuff that I no longer recall, and to come back the next day. I asked about money and she laughed and said we would deal with that later. She knew I was a student and had no insurance since it was summer. I came back the next day and she cleaned it again, may have put a butterfly bandage on it and told me to come back in 3 days. At that time she charged me 200 bucks. For 3 visits, one on a Sunday. $200.00. And my swelling went down right away, although I did have to go to my Berkeley orientation looking like a battered woman - you know, no one looks at you when you appear to be a battered woman - it was a very interesting experience, to be invisible yet on display. That was June of 2006. I go regularly for Botox when I'm in the States. I too had another procedure by someone else who screwed it up and Dr. Parnell told me she could fix it but I decided I should just live with it as a sign that I put my vanity before my brains, although yes, I do still get the occasional Botox. My whole family has gone to her for years. Her practice is huge for obvious reasons. I can't speak to the claims of mishaps, I personally have had great experiences with her. In any case, I'm not going to Diana for a sit down. I'm going for her years of experience, end of story. She always has a minute or two to ask about my school, family and major events. I'm sorry for any of you that had a bad experience, it never happened to me so I don't know. I went to another doctor for Botox and it gave me 2 black eyes and it was only after that I was told never to get Botox when I'm menstruating as it makes bruising much more likely. I've also had it where it prevented me from closing my eyes all the way (weird) so I never do my crows feet. Now I just want to look uniform - I'm 50 and don't need to look 30 - I just want a bit of sprucing up. On a really good day I look 40 but on a great day I FEEL like I'm 19. read more

I met with dr Parnell and her assistant today. I love her assistant who I met once before as I came in to demo one of the dr's machines. I was so impressed with the assistant I made an appointment with dr Parnell as I had some skin concerns. I found her to be very nice, straight forward and had an excellent experience. Her office is not as fancy as other dermatologists I have been to, but I always leave those offices feeling like my bill reflects heavily on their overhead. She did IPL on me - it worked initially and then developed in Malasma.   Kinda upset because upon research she should have done a test patch because I easily tan and IPL isn't that great for someone like me (oh - she doesn't do the actual IPL, her assistant does).  So, with my skin actually darkening - worse then ever before - I calling the office for an appointment mentioning the developing malasma and that my face felt burning. They scheduled me far out, couldn't believe it. Because I already had another appointment for my mom, I took that one the following day. They didn't seem happy to see me. Parnell looked, noticed some spots had actually blistered. She prescribed medication that helped with the malasma, but not really my skin burning feeling. I was on my own. Never a call from the office to check on me. Seemed like she didn't want to deal with a botch job. Luckily, the harm was superficial and I educated myself on burned skin and healing it effectively. Have to say, not very professional for a doctor. Expensive considering no results but a burned skin and a mask of pregnancy effect. However, the no follow up care - not professional. read more

I had an apt at Dr. Parnell's office last week. I go every few years to have my "SK's" and brown spots removed by laser. I was greeted warmly and put in the very capable hands of lovely nurse Noel who did an incredibly thorough job along with putting me at ease throughout the entire procedure. In addition to that Noel is very knowledgeable and could answer all of my questions. I love having my smooth skin back and I would highly recommend this office for any type of laser procedure. Any star rating doesn't even apply here. My experience of Diana Parnell was of a rude, impersonal and arrogant person with a condescending attitude and I'll never forget it. I still bear a facial scar from when, without discussion, she used liquid nitrogen to treat a small pimple under my eye. The deposit of the treatment material was three or four time larger than the pimple and destroyed the pigment in my skin leaving a large white splotch. I have had the area examined by several plastic surgeons and dermatologists all of whom said they would never use liquid nitrogen in the fragile tissue around the eyes. The experience of Dr Parnell speaks for itself. She was clearly trained in an era when "The Doctor" was in control and the patient was submissive. She has clearly not seen fit to evolve and based, solely on my own experience, I would challenge her judgement. Be careful with this one. There are plenty of GOOD dermatologists around. read more

Went with her to help remove something I had on my skin she literally milked money and prescribed me something that didn't do anything to remove what I had. I paid her around 600$ for the appt and the medicine. Went to CVS and found something that I didn't think would work, it was 12$ and it removed what I had. I would NEVER go back to her, wouldn't recommend her to anyone unless you have money to blow and donate to her just because your bored. read more

Dr. Parnell has been my dermotologist for years and she has generally been good. Her office can be a bit hard to find if you haven't spent much time out in Marin so make sure you get directions first. You walk in through some door with the scary words 'Plastic Surgery' on them and speak to the pleasant receptionist. You have a seat where you have about 100 magazines to choose from. Hang out a bit, listen to ipod, then you are ushered into your private room. Dr. Parnell swishes in and after a brief "hello, how are you" gets to the bottom of things. She is quick, efficient, and extremely knowledgeable after decades in practice. Her recommendations have generally been highly accurate, a difficult feat in the field of dermotology. I took off a star for insurance billing procedures, but otherwise I definitely recommend her. read more

I was very pleased by my experience at Dr. Parnell's practice. I don't know if in fact it is only her practice or a group as it is a very large office, but I didn't feel treated any less for the size. What struck me most about the Dr is how quickly we were comfortable on a first name basis. I was quickly diagnosed, treated and on my way. I could have waited around while this and that clinician came to me or I to them. She handled everything herself during the exam. I too almost didn't come by because of the not handling insurance policy. It does make getting setup at the office's paperwork a snap to do. Having now been I can say it was definitely worth the extra work of filing my own insurance. I would recommend her to anyone. read more

She is serious about her craft, she doesn't deal well with spoiled, self entitled brats. I LOVE HER FOR THIS. I had (past tense) LOTS of black spots and scarring from a hair removal procedure I had done prior to see ing Dr Parnell. Well guess what? 3 months later they were gone!!!!!! I told her I Dont do pills or needles. She prescribed a topical cream program for me. I followed it to the T. Here it is 7 years later and still no spots. My office visit plus cream was $190 some may thinks that's a lot of money but for me to be a 40 year old woman and universally mistaken for being 25 or younger?? I say its priceless. One year ago I visited Dr. Parnell with complaints of an extensive rash. I was examined and a biopsy of a lesion was obtained. I was put on medications and another visit was scheduled. When the biopsy came back with no diagnosis and the rash continued more meds were prescribed. I suggested seeing an allergist but was advised that wouldn't be necessary because it would involve many skin tests that would reveal anything. This same stuff went on for 6 weeks. The staff was friendly and helpful. My disappointment in this whole series of visits was the non-listening to patient suggestions. Since leaving there I discovered my own diagnosis and I'm not a doctor. I'm allergic to latex. I do know now that it is mostly a crap shoot for Dermatologists. If they don't have a picture or haven't seen it before it turns into a costly series of tests to discover who knows what. I do know that it is a fact that 50% of all MD diagnoses are made after an extensive history and physical. That didn't happen in my case. I'm sorry that medicare had to pay for that. read more

I made an apointment to see dr parnell and was told they could squeeze me in. Little did i know, they really do squeeze you in. When my name was called i was takin to another room and waited, dr parnell finally came in. I have never felt so hurried and rushed that it was all done (5min) at most. Next thing i know im paying around 150 bucks and they set another apptmnt up, for what i dont know. I felt like i was in a fast food restuarnt where they dont care how the customer fells. I've been going to Dr. Parnell for over a decade. I have lots of freckles and moles so when I have a skin cancer check I give her a workout! Last year a bump showed up literally over night on my arm. When it didn't go away after two weeks I saw Dr. Parnell. The minute she saw it she told me it was skin cancer and that she wasn't waiting for test results; it was coming off now! Before I left the office she told me not to worry when the biopsy results came in because she just treated it. Sure enough it was squamous cell. I appreciated that she took care of it right away and that is the kind of doctor she is. Her nurse, Carol is great as well as the rest of her staff. I was very disappointed with Dr. Parnell. I went in for a full body screening and was told I had some barnacles that could be easily removed. I was charged $800 for removing these very small patches that did not bother me until they were pointed out to me. Her assistant removed so many of these barnacles that my skin became inflamed. She never discussed the outlandish price with me beforehand, nor the risks of my skin reaction. I would have never had the procedure done. read more

I have seen Dr. Parnell several times over a number of years. She tries to have a good bedside manner, although I think she is somewhat abrupt at times by nature. I think this goes along with a dermatology practice that is based on how many people you can see in a day. On balance, I think her work is adequate, but her head nurse really ruined my experience and drove me away. Dr. Parnell promised free treatment for areas she had already treated. However, the nurse apparently doesn't keep good notes. She charged me twice for areas that had already been treated. When I challenged this, I was told I was mistaken. Personally, as one who has had a few burns at a dermatologist, I can tell you I never forget. I wrote to Dr. Parnell to complain and she affirmed that she stood by her nurse. I went in for a screening and Dr. Parnell found two innocuous red dots on my face, one by my ear. Dr. Parnell took a biopsy and since they were small, decided to take the "dots" and areas around them. Good thing, the lab results showed they were basal cell. She measured every mole and dark spot so that at the next check up she could determine if there was any growth. She was fast, efficient and got rid of the bad stuff and maintained the good stuff. I was impressed with the breadth of her knowledge and the extent of the services she offers, medical and cosmetic. A terrific professional. read more

I have been going to Dr. Parnell for over 10 years now. Any time I have a significant problem, I go to her and she has been spot on each time. She runs an efficient practice and does not waste time in the exam room but if you need her to slow down or provide more input, she does not hesitate to do so. She has gone above and beyond in treating both my broken spirit and skin conditions and I would recommend her to anyone. She even called to check in on me after a recent scary diagnosis. Only one of my other many doctors has ever done that. The insurance issue is a minor inconvenience all things considered and she IS very straight forward and decisive which may come across as "brusque" to some.
