I've been taking lessons for a few months now and DG has become my regular go to. The trainers here are fantastic: knowledgeable, nice, flexible. Super easy to get in touch with, and super easy to find pricing (which in gyms/trainers is annoyingly hard to find). The facility is clean and comfortable, with just about anything you would need for boxing. The training I have done is the 1-1 lessons. I have found myself learning different moves, footwork, and bag training. I have even gotten myself to sparring with other people. I went to this boxing gym to enroll my husband and two kids. I was trying to figure out where to enter the parking lot when a woman wearing the GYM'S shirt started yelling and screaming at me. I repeatedly told her we were there to sign up for the gym, but she continued being aggressive for absolutely no reason, all in front of my children. She got out of her car and tried to fight me. Seemed to be on some type of drugs. I went inside pissed at this point to ask who was running the place because this woman was causing a scene outside. Instead of handling the situation professionally, she jumped into the boxing ring and told me to fight her. This place is trashy, low-class, and completely unprofessional. I walked in ready to spend money and left disgusted. As a nurse, I would never attend a place like this or bring my children into an environment where this kind of behavior is tolerated. If this is how potential customers are treated, I can't recommend this place to anyone. Don't bother. read more

My dad started me in boxing when I was in third grade and I continued off and on for the next 50 years. DG is the best kids trainer I have ever seen. He trained both of my sons from a young age and now he is training my eight year old grandson. My two grand daughters will be at DG Boxing as they turn 7. DG is hard working, patient, gives clear instruction at the kids level and starts the kids slowly at a reasonable developmental pace. He does not just throw the kids in the ring and let them beat each other up. He brings them along at a pace that is suitable for each individual kid. This place is great. Communication with DG is easy. Got all the info I needed to do private lessons with the trainers. I have worked with all three so far. Jeter, Cedric, and Tyler. Great instruction and really focused on helping beginners get comfortable with the whole process of boxing and learning in a chill and fun environment. My six year old also comes with me and he has benefited greatly as well. The thing I love the most is the focus on fundamentals and building off of that. Located near the busy intersection of PCH and 7th is DG Boxing. It's a small gym where you can come to train, get in shape, learn self-defense or just relive your inner fantasy of being Rocky. Since I'm looking for new fun & creative ways to exercise I called DG Boxing to see what they were all about. There's also a lot of information on their website: www.dgboxinggyms.com I learned that there's a free beginners lesson on weekdays at 6pm. So you can give the gym a test-drive before you commit to a training regimen. There's girls boxing classes on Saturdays, but I want to box with the manly men. I don't need no sissy-girl-boxing!!! So I arrive for my first workout complete with pink boxing gloves. I felt like I had broken into the boy's club. I got over it and joined in. Basically the class is a 50-minute circuit with a trainer who helps you go through the various exercises that include punching the bag, shadow boxing, and dancing around the ring. I loved how I saw my flabby triceps waving back at me as I threw punches in front of the mirror. :| Note to self: work the triceps!!!! This place is so cool. I LOVE DG and his boxing gym! I went to DG's for the first time a little over 2 years ago via a referral of a friend of a friend. Being a 20 something female, I was basically looking for a workout that would also give me some skills (especially since my coordination skills are not very strong). I visited DG's and fell in love. The first session was free, they dont want to have you pay for something thing that you dont want, so I tried out the evening session. The session was a bit crowded, but the trainers went around to give everyone attention and pointers. I attended a 6pm class that had quite a few youths in attendance, but everyone was friendly and welcoming. I attended the evening sessions for a couple of weeks until I decided to switch over to morning sessions. The morning sessions were much more my style, less people and an older crowd, so I stuck with that until my move out of state. I was in the best shape of my life when I was boxing with DG. My coordination has improved as they worked patiently showing me the different moves. Like the other trainers, DG is very nice and easy to talk to. DG has a passion for training and it shows through training with him. He also has some great stories to share while you work out! The workout is intense, and the trainers will push you, but they wont push you beyond your limit. They are great about checking in on how you're feeling so as not to have you pass out! The place is a bit small and there is no AC, but there are large fans and the place ventilates well. Even in the midst of summer I did not ever feel that it was too stuffy. I'm back in the state for the summer, so I went right back to DG. Even though I had been gone for so long, they remembered me! I'm sad that I'll be leaving again soon, but when I return for good, I'm going to be sure to live close to DG's to train again! read more

As a female, I was a little intimidated walking into a new boxing gym to try out. However, I was greeted by a friendly instructor (Jared) who was not intimidating at all. He and another instructor (Renae) made me feel welcomed and comfortable during class. They train people at their skill level. So if you're a beginner, they will teach you the basics. If you're advanced, they will have you spar with other members who are at the same level. I tried out the 7pm class and loved it. We started out with warmups (jump ropes and exercise drills in the ring), then focus mitt drills, then bag workout, and lastly ab workouts. The next few days I met with the owner and became a member! The owner (DG) is also very nice and makes you feel welcomed. He responds quickly to your texts/calls if you need anything or have any questions. Great customer service! It seems that most of the instructors here have a calm voice and personality. I've been to other gyms where some instructors are too aggressive and even condescending. The instructors here also actually correct your form and really teach you correct form, stance, and other boxing skills. There are other gyms I've been to where they just tell you to do combos and don't even correct or critique you at all. I appreciate the critique because that's how you learn and improve :) read more

Tucked away at the corner of 7th and Bellflower you'll find this hole-in-the-wall boxing gym. It doesn't look like much from the outside (and really not much from the inside either), but don't let the looks fool you, this is a gym that will give you one of the best workouts you've ever had, and teach you how to fight at the same time. I say "fight" because a lot of people think of boxing as just a sport. But the skills I learned at DG Boxing were some of the most street-fight applicable techniques I've ever learned. And the manner in which boxing teaches you their techniques makes you a more effective fighter in a shorter period of time than many other traditional martial arts. I'm a firm believer that the way to learn to fight...is to actually fight. This sounds pretty obvious, but what you'll find at most martial arts schools is a lot of hitting pads and a lot of learning techniques, but not a lot of actual fighting/sparring at high speeds. It's a business decision that keeps paying customers uninjured and coming back to pay their dues. The downside is that you don't actually learn to fight. Imagine trying to learn to play basketball by doing imaginary drills in the air with no actual basket or ball and then trying to play a 5-on-5 game (Hint: It wouldn't be pretty). Boxing doesn't have that limitation. At DG Boxing I was able to get multiple rounds of sparring on a daily basis. During my rounds I was constantly monitored and critiqued by a knowledgeable trainer, often DG (Dave Gonzalez) himself. My standup striking has never improved as much as it did during my time at DG Boxing. GREAT CARDIO WORKOUT: For those not interested in the street-fight/martial arts side of boxing, DG Boxing definitely has you covered when it comes to getting a great cardio workout. Boxing gives you an incredible cardio workout with minimal injury and damage to your body. Of all the sports I've done (wrestling, basketball, baseball, etc) boxing gave me the best cardio workout while avoiding injuries (Editor's Note: wrestling was better workout but IT WILL break you). I lost over 10 pounds and it gave me a more lean, toned look than I had been able to get in the past. A typical workout at DG Boxing consists of circuit training, where each fighter rotates through various boxing related stations to the count of a boxing round timer. So you can keep track of your workout by the number of rounds you survive. My old workout consisted of a warmup run by the man-made lake near the Rec golf course, a few rounds of jump rope, shadow boxing, and footwork. And then a few rounds of speed bag, double-end bag, and heavy bag. I'd try to get 3-6 rounds of sparring in each time depending on who was at the gym. Finally we'd finish with hitting the mits with a trainer in a one-on-one setting. I'd wrap up with a couple rounds of push-ups and situps before bidding the gym a farewell. Boxing workouts remind you that getting in great shape doesn't require a fancy gym or fancy apparatuses. REASONABLE PRICING: My time at DG Boxing was a little while back so I'm not sure how the current pricing works. But at the time I was there, the pricing seemed very fair and reasonable compared to other martial arts schools. ONE-ON-ONE TRAINER: DG is a small gym that gets you a lot of one-on-one time with the trainers. Usually you'll get DG himself, giving you pointers and tips on how to improve your technique. DG is a very laid back, likeable guy that really cares about his fighters. He's not the steroided-out, killing machine that you find at most gyms, but he has a really good eye for spotting problems with fighters and fixing them (the mark of a good trainer). One disclaimer I would give is that DG's level of training will likely vary depending on your goals at the gym. If you're just there for some good cardio and to hit the bags a bit, you might not get as much attention from the trainers than if you're there to actually learn to box. So let DG know if you're serious about putting on the headgear and getting into the ring and make sure you get what you want out of the gym. LIVING THE DREAM: Another reviewer mentioned that this gym feels like a throwback gym of the 20's or 30's. I don't know if it's the gym or just boxing in general, but working out here definitely has that feel. It really feels like an old-school boxing gym where you're running in the footsteps of boxing greats. Or getting a chance to live out your Rocky dreams. And who knows? If you really enjoy it and have the desire, DG might just get you into a real boxing match or two, where you'll walk to the ring to the sound of your name getting announced on the PA and the cheers of your family and friends. Win or lose, I guarantee it'll be one of the most memorable experiences of your life! This is a great, old-school boxing gym that is increasingly hard to find in the modern era. "Your form is bad and you don't know how to box." That's what my newest boxing instructor surprised me with back in September. After a year of DG Boxing (and a year elsewhere), my new instructor felt I was worse than a beginner. I had a lot of bad habits that went uncorrected all that time. I bent my knees too much, didn't stay grounded on punches, raised my shoulders, ducked my head when going inside, and didn't keep my elbows to my sides when throwing a punch. These are fairly typical mistakes, but at DG Boxing the instructor only counseled me to relax my shoulders. "Where did you take boxing before?" he'd often ask. I suppose he was marveling at my bad form, but he wasn't going to correct it. When I was about to move out of Long Beach, I showed one of the instructors the website for a boxing gym in my new city, and I asked him for his opinion. "It's good -- for what you're looking for," he replied. In his mind, I guess one sloppy gym would suit my purposes as well as any other -- but see, I want to improve. The problem is probably rooted in boxing-gym culture. For a long time, they mostly served competitive boxers, and teaching beginners was considered a waste of time. If you're a lawyer or an accountant or a longshoreman or whatever, DG Boxing wants to help you learn to box -- read their blurb -- but they won't. Save your $90/month or try another gym. In many of the classes I attended after work, the instructor was often busy texting a girlfriend for most of the hour. The classes run a regular list of exercises, and the students basically go through the rigamarole without much guidance -- then hit the bag! Go go go! Not that the instructors won't let you spar someone above your level, mind you. I went through several sparring sessions, but never managed to pick up anything useful -- and one opponent was really putting as much power as he could into punching. Who knows why? What was the point of that? Shouldn't I maybe learn to defend myself a little better before stepping into that barrage? "Relax your shoulders," the instructor tells me. Great. Also, there are no weights or machines, and there's no water fountain. You'll have to buy a $1 water bottle at DG if you've forgotten to bring your own. On the plus side, the staff are nice people -- by SoCal standards -- so if you're already a competitive boxer and you need somewhere convenient to work out, it might be perfect for your needs. read more

DG Boxing has good prices and different programs to fit you schedule. The group sessions are never too packed so they have time to give you some one on one training. The trainers know what they are talking about and are very nice. They have a well equipped gym with a boxing ring, heavy punching bags, double end bags, speed bags, a variety of different weight medicine balls, body balls and many other things. I have received excellent training from DG boxing. I recommend everyone looking for a great workout or training to do boxing matches to try DG Boxing specially because there first session is FREE! My little sister now does one session a week and loves it! My boyfriend has just started boxing and really seems to enjoy it. read more

Poor out of shape trainers, I signed up through a deal with living social for 5 classes, after 3 classes I realize I'm wasting my time and stopped showing up. 40 min of the 60 min class consist of jump rope, jumping side to side in the ring, sit ups, punching the bag on my own and resting. When i was finally learning the one two punch, the trainer kept saying my technique is wrong but couldn't show me the correct way since he was over weight and couldn't perform it himself. Lesson one was disappointing but i figured it was day one, day two would be better. Nope! Day two was exactly like day one, except this time he taught me to uppercut, again my technique was wrong, but he couldn't show me the correct way himself. Towards the end of day two he tells me to hit the punching bag and walks to the desk and sat down. Wth? If i wanted to punch the bag myself without being taught anything i could do that on my own. After two bad session i figure i already paid for 5 sessions so give it another shot. Day three was a combination of day one and two, total waste of time and money. I am so dissatisfied with this poor excuse of a gym that i register to yelp just to write a bad review. read more

Trained here off and on for a year or so.. Staff is very nice, learned the basics of boxing and got in good shape. Prices seem competitive compared with others. I signed up for DG back in May in hopes of finding a new way to workout where I wasn't doing the same old running on the treadmill every day. I was an athlete growing up, so I wanted a challenge as well. Every person at the gym is SO friendly. We all get along and no one makes you feel intimidated. There are a variety of people training - some are just there to get into shape while some are actually trianing to fight. Whatever your desire, DG and Joe will help you. As far as results, I personally love the way it makes me look when I go consistently (which is anywhere from 2-5x a week). It's the perfect amount of cardio and strength training. For the first time in my life I have definition in my arms, and thanks to body work at the end my abs & legs saw results as well. I'm not a fan of looking too skinny; I want to look fit. This workout is perfect for that. He even lets me and the girls I go with stay a little longer to do some additional working out once the hour is up. Additionally, you get out what you put in here. If you go hard every round you will leave drenched in sweat. Take every rotation seriously and you will feel great when you leave. DG is also awesome with finding a program that works for you. He truly just wants to help people learn to box & get into shape. No complaints from me at all. Wonderful people running a wonderful gym. read more

I joined DG boxing a while back and loved it but had to stop because I moved out of town. I have been to many boxing gyms for a long time now and DG is one of the best I have been to not because of the equipment or the size but because of the training I received from the morning session. The trainer's name in the morning is Anthony and you can tell he knows a great deal about the sport and has a vast knowledge for boxing when he shows you how to throw punches or when you see him working with the fighters that train there, and also since he was an actual fighter himself but also takes the time to explain the technique to you. His mitt work is excellent too he does the fancy stuff on TV or he can slow it down for the beginners, he doesn't just hold the mitt out and tell you to hit it. He comes up with all kinds of crazy of combinations that is fun to watch when he is working with the more advanced boxes that train there. Also he is really funny too, very friendly and charismatic. He makes you feel comfortable with his personality. He takes his training serious because he has pride in his abilities to either make you a competitive boxer or someone who just wants to become fit. Unlike Williams Gyms in downtown long beach where you basically train yourself and get robbed for your money, you will actually get your money worth if you train at DG. read more
