I was shopping in The Park a few months ago, on a Thursday evening around 7.30. During my trip I had purchased a game from Smyth's and put it in the front pockets of my Jumper before proceeding to go into the computers department of Harvey Norman. So my friend and I were browsing around the shop for a couple of minutes, before noticing that we wore getting a lot of stares by the sales staff around the shop. One approached us and asked us if we required any assistance in which I replied "no thanks, we're just having a look around". Which is fine until as we are browsing and we notice that the staff, and what also seemed to be the store manager to who I to have learned is Colin Curtis, are quite obviously following us around and keeping a very very close eye on my friend and I. At this stage the shop was quite empty and I start to feel very intimidated about how the members of staff where around me so we started to walk towards the exit out of the computers department where the store managers was standing at the security fences, waiting for us to pass. We obviously pass it with no alarm, feeling very uneasy about the whole situation. As I'm walking away I turn back towards the store manager and say, from about 10 feet away, "is there a problem?". He walks towards me and says "what's in your pocket", so with no hesitation I take out the game and the receipt from Smyth's and say "I purchased that in Smyth's before I came in here". His only reply was "Oh sorry we taught you had one of our games in your pocket" and proceeded to walk back to the store" I have honestly never felt so embarrassed in my life. I understand to a certain extent why they taught what they did as it was showing through my front pocket but that is NOT how you should handle a situation where you think somebody is stealing. You never accused me of stealing but I would have preferred to be accused than surrounded and stared at. That is not how you treat your "customers" Harvey Norman. Luke

She listened to what I wanted and showed me an array of mattresses and bed frames until I found the ones that suited my needs. I felt under no pressure and left very happy. Meadows & Byrne is a pretty cool home and garden shop in Dun Laoghaire. It's one of those places…read moreyou walk into with no intention of buying anything, and then leave with a whole range of interesting items you never knew you'd ever want or need (but you need them now!) They sell all sorts, from kitchen furniture to glasses, to 'slurp' soup mugs, to banana leaf trays and garden settings. My favourite item in store is the wall-mounted wine opener, which comes in at a pretty 139 euro (ouch, but once you see it no price is too great!) A good place for some Sunday shopping if you're of the inclination. They also have an Insomnia cafe attached for those who tire of their partner's browsing habits.

This is a nice big open store with plenty of ideas if you are furnishing your home...at a price…read more Good selection of cooking and kitchen gear and they are mostly where I go when I am looking for something in particular as they generally have it. Think Ikea but more expensive so keep an eye open for their sales as they generally have a good bargain to be found. When you do bite the bullet and buy something you generally still love it even after a few years and their stuff is always good quality so perhaps they may be expensive but worth it.

JY1701 - TEXAS CREAM BAR, CREAM PU,WALNUT…read more The product quality has been very disappointing, and the sales and customer services, even worse. We purchased five 'Texas Cream Bar (walnut)' stools - less than a year later, various parts of the stools started to fall apart. Aside from the quality of the stools being substandard to the point of disintegration, we have a toddler rambling about, making it a dangerous flaw in the product. We contacted customer service and received a response a week later. Two weeks later, when the technician arrived he implied, at least 5 or 6 times, that it was my fault as we should have ordered the stools with a technician to build them. When I told the technician that I had not been informed of this option at the time of sale, and in fact, was quite disappointed at the reception of the flat pack as I usually avoid them, he maintained his stance and generally abrupt, unhelpful behaviour. His final 'expert advice' was to "go to a hardware store to find and replace screws" (i.e. fix it yourself), before he ran out the door to make sure he didn't get a ticket on his illegally parked car. The screws were very hard to find, and do not match the chairs. I rang the office to report my dissatisfaction but never received the return call.

In front of the large shop…read morewindow in the George's Street Arcade were two searingly hot pink rococo arm chairs, just two of the incredibly diverse antiques and replicas stocked here and in the shop's second location on Capel street. Inside a serious collector stroked a blue dragonfly Tiffany lamp, chatting amicably with the staff. Taking a look for myself I found an incredible mix of old and new, genuine and "homage" pieces on sale for the kind of prices I'd readily pay... if only I had somewhere to put a marble-topped sideboard and six foot mirror. The vibe in this shop is fun and a bit frantic, something which is echoed by the company's manic website, crammed as the store is with photos of new stock and scrolling updates on the lifespan of each location. Next time you find yourself in the market for a gift with personality for the homeowner who has everything, might I direct you to the only shop in George's Arcade that prominently features more than one Betty Boop statue over three feet tall?
