Meadows & Byrne is a pretty cool home and garden shop in Dun Laoghaire. It's one of those places you walk into with no intention of buying anything, and then leave with a whole range of interesting items you never knew you'd ever want or need (but you need them now!) They sell all sorts, from kitchen furniture to glasses, to 'slurp' soup mugs, to banana leaf trays and garden settings. My favourite item in store is the wall-mounted wine opener, which comes in at a pretty 139 euro (ouch, but once you see it no price is too great!) A good place for some Sunday shopping if you're of the inclination. They also have an Insomnia cafe attached for those who tire of their partner's browsing habits. read more

This is a nice big open store with plenty of ideas if you are furnishing your home...at a price. Good selection of cooking and kitchen gear and they are mostly where I go when I am looking for something in particular as they generally have it. Think Ikea but more expensive so keep an eye open for their sales as they generally have a good bargain to be found. When you do bite the bullet and buy something you generally still love it even after a few years and their stuff is always good quality so perhaps they may be expensive but worth it. read more

This is the kind of shop in the kind of location that it's wonderful to wander around on a Sunday afternoon. It is NOT the kind of shop where it is, for example, good to buy anything more than coffee. Such as cookware. I bought a wok there recently. It cost E40. I had only one question, 'will it work on an induction cooker'. The sales assistant barely looked at it and said 'i don't know'. I asked the question and waited for the follow up. I guess that I don't look like one of their clients, I look like a housewife. There was no follow up at all. It was probably the rudest encounter that I've had with a shop assistant ever, yet I'd say that I look like 90% of the housewives in Dun laoghaire. I wanted a wok to USE. Apparently you just go here to BROWSE, unless you have a personal intro or the D4 look?? I am totally baffled. This was an incredible place to window shop, with the rudest counter staff ever, and I can only imagine that they live on their income from coffee, because i'd never go back to the home store. Great selection, very arrogant, unhelpful and totally irritating staff. Particularly if you actually want to buy stuff, not just pose. I note that the other reviews comment on how good a place it is to BROWSE (I agree, great), but not to shop (the service is appalling, their knowledge of their stock is non existent, and they are arrogant snobs to a man). read more

Oh, if I ever have my own house, this is where I'll start. They just have the most lovely things, from table dressings to sofas to wall hangings to crockery. Yes, it's not the cheapest in the world, but that can be forgiven in the face of the fact that I'll not be doing real person's shopping for a few years yet. This place is, however, perfect for Christmas shopping, as they do some gorgeous decorations and general Christmassy things. Very festive altogether! read more

This shop has really nice stuff that I can usually only look at. It is very pricey! They do have nice scented candles that actually smell when lit though. It's way out of my league and I find I can get nice stuff in ikea and even Dunnes Home that I can actually afford. read more

Meadows and Byrne is a gorgeous home store below the Pavilion theatre in Dun Laoghaire. They stock designer furniture, candles of all shapes and sizes, mirrors, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, glasses and tablewear, and many more lovely things besides. There's also an Insomnia coffee shop in the corner of the store, with a few outdoor tables too. The prices are way out of my league, but I often pop in here for a wander and imagine how beautiful my home would be if I could afford all of this stuff. They have beautiful pottery from the likes of Nicholas Mosse and Louis Mulcachy, which make really nice presents. They have all their Christmas stock in at the moment, though designer co-ordinated decorations are not really my thing - I'm more of a mismatched, tacky tinsel kind of gal. read more
