    Plain cider donuts

Don't forget to bring cash or your check! What a cute cider place. The hot cider was the perfect drinking temperature. You got to enjoy it immediately and taste the comfort. Don't forget to grab some donuts. I enjoyed the plain ones over the cinnamon / sugar ones. But they were both still great. I was also able to take a small cider home to enjoy it later that night

Delicious apple cider slushies and cider donuts--definitely visit Dexter Cider Mill! We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon, and though the line was long, it moved quickly. The apple cider slushie was one of the best I've had--perfectly sweet! The cider donuts, especially with cinnamon sugar, are a must-try. The only downside is the limited seating by the river, which was overrun with bees. Plan to take your treats to-go! TL;DR: Amazing cider slushies and donuts, but grab them to-go due to limited seating and insects.

Front of the building. Slammed for parking.

I went here with my family and we liked the area! We were met by friendly staff, short lines, and great food. We ordered the cinnamon donuts, cider slushes, and a pint of cider. My family has been to roughly 15 cider mills in the metro Detroit area and this is one of our favorites, because of the spiced cider favor and the extra cinnamon on the donuts. Only downside was all the bees.

Stopped for our likely oats Apple cider donut for the year. The highlight of Dexter may be the apple cider mill and maybe the one lane bridge? The cinnamon sugar donuts are cold, but are soft and doughy on the inside. The sugar makes you at first feel like it's a slightly crunchy exterior of the donut, but it's soft. It was okay. The small styrofoam cup of warmed apple cider is $3 a piece, kind of expensive and a bit lacking in spiced seasoning too. The GF donut was $3.50, is was really dense and flavorless and not worth the carbs at all. $25 for the apple strudel, two cinnamon sugar donuts, pint of cold cider, 2 cups of the warm cider and an Apple fritter. The apple strudel tasted okay. Only had apple one side of the entire strudel. Not a big fan of the hugely rock sugar all over the strudel either. The cinnamon sugar donut was so-so. The dough inside and out is soft. The cinnamon sugar ratio is good. The Apple fritter here tastes good at least. Would be better warmer. The exterior has a nice crust and crunch to it.

I'm a bit of a cider mill newbie as I've only been to Franklin and now Dexter's Cider Mill. Dexter proudly reps that they're the the "oldest, continuously operating cider mill in the State of Michigan"! That's some serious cred. It's small and it's mainly a line that snakes into the building and out, but you can get a nice view of the Huron river in the back. The parking lot is small but you can easily find parking in the surrounding neighborhood. I ordered the: *Half Dozen Apple Cider Doughnuts - They were able to accommodate half plain & half cinnamon sugar, so that's what I got! They were both great - nice, fluffy & warm. *Apple Fritter - This was a bit more toasty looking like an extra toasty Cheez-It but it really brought out some caramel-y flavors. Delicious!

Knowing absolutely nothing about Michigan has its advantages since I have no preconceived notions of what the state has to offer. My unabated ignorance led Jamie W. and I to take a slightly rural detour on our way to Ann Arbor to visit Jamie's alma mater. Go Blue. I had no idea how pretty this part of the state was considering we weren't that far away from Motor City, and I certainly didn't know apple cider mills were a thing her. I figured that was a Washington state thing or maybe New England. I need to get out more. Anyway, this family-owned operation is just a fifteen-minute drive off Hwy 23. All we did was follow the rest of the cars to the inviting barn-red farmhouse. Around it were huge crates of apples, and inside were more apples in little bags. I get it. They sell apples. They also sell apple cider and doughnuts. Apparently that's what you're supposed to buy for a breakfast snack. I wish I knew that before the veggie omelette I had an hour before, but it won't kill me if I had one $1 Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut (photo: http://bit.ly/2S54Hbp). Right? Even though glazed cinnamon buns and apple bread were within reach. It was just a cake doughnut, nothing special, but the $2.50 styrofoam cup of Hot Spiced Cider was soothing balm on a wintry morning (photo: http://bit.ly/2QahWtQ). Strudel and pies, jams and bottles of their wood-pressed cider. It's a hard-knock apple life here. However, the best part was in the next building where the Sandhill Crane Vineyards offered complimentary tastings of four of their wines. Since I was so not the designated driver, I fully indulged and they were delicious. So pleased was I that I bought an $18 bottle of their Rhapsody in Red, a velvety red wine with a raspberry finish (photo: http://bit.ly/2Q9P1X0). No, it wasn't Boone's Farm. Not by a long shot. Open since 1866, Dexter Cider Mill is Michigan's oldest continuously operated cider mill. How's that for history? Don't care? Go Blue. CIDER - 4 stars...tasty elixir but the doughnut was barely a 3 AMBIANCE - 5 stars...as quaint as the Stratford Inn on "Newhart" SERVICE - 3.5 stars...it's what they do TOTAL - 4 stars...fulfill your cider mill fantasies...even if you didn't know you had any RELATED - Are you coming to Detroit? A bike ride to the Cider Mill for a pint of ice cold apple cider and a warm, freshly made donut... life simply doesn't get much better than this! Family owned and operated since the horse-drawn buggy days of 1886, the Dexter Cider Mill is the oldest, continuously operating cider Mill in the state of Michigan. The Mill is housed in a rustic, barn-red structure perched above Huron River and presses native Michigan apples to create a deliciously fresh, unpasteurized apple cider. Their cider is what I call "Clean Water" baby! The "Mill" also bakes and prepares 2 classic styles of fresh donuts as well as a delicious apple nut bread, strudel, turnovers and homemade pies on the weekend. Over the years, my wife and I have enjoyed all of the above...and they've all been over the moon. A visit to the Dexter Cider Mill is an annual rite of Fall for us here in the upper Midwest. Today, my wife and I rode our bicycles to the Mill via the bike trail in the Dexter-Huron Metropark. Burning a few calories on our bikes was my perfect excuse to chow down an extra donut! If you are looking for a fun-filled Fall adventure, let me suggest that you consider venturing out to the small town of Dexter to soak in some history and make some enjoyable 5 star memories.

Several of…read moreour old standbys were closed for the weekend so after a bit of digging we came across Berry Hill Farm. So cute! It's right on the border of Dexter/Chelsea and is just big enough to make picking SUPER easy but not so big that you need to spend a ton of time here. I think we were in and out in about 30-40 minutes at most, and we filled a whole flat with delicious berries. They're only open during picking season so check their facebook page for daily updates on picking quality and hours. When you arrive, check in with the owners and they'll give you a box with containers and an empty milk jug to tie around your waist for easy two handed picking. Then dig in! There are several rows of different berry varieties, including red raspberries, black raspberries, and golden raspberries. You'll know they're ripe when they're a deep color and pull right off the bush. The bushes, especially blackberries, are a bit spiky so be careful! I didn't bring gloves because I find them a bit cumbersome so I did get poked a couple of times but nothing major. When you're done, head back to the garage with your tray and they'll tally up your berries. Currently it's $2.50 per pint. Cash or check only. Brought home the berries and they were SO good. They really lasted a long time too. It's been over a week and I've still be throwing them in my yogurt every morning. Baked up beautifully in some breakfast bars too. Excited to have discovered this place and I'm definitely looking forward to visiting year after year.

The summer greens and veggies are wholesome and still-dirty-from-the-field fresh; the winter gives a mix of storage roots and sturdy hoop-house produce. My favorites from the past year have been beets, kale, chard, romanesque (crazy fractal cauliflower), tomatoes, and cucumbers. There's definitely a Michigan cast to the selection; some months it's every bit as colorful as the Full Belly Farm box we got in Berkeley, some months it makes me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder's root cellar with a side of hoop-house lettuce. Everything's from right on the farm (unlike a "farm box" we once got that included bananas). A full share is about right for 3-4 people; we used to get a half share (a full portion each pickup, but only every other week), and we now split a full share with another couple. We haven't ended up with a freezer full of butternut squash (always a danger in Berkeley), but finishing the jalapeños while they're fresh sometimes takes planning. I usually pick up from the Friday morning Old West Side stop on Sunnyside (it's hosted in a customer's driveway); I occasionally get out to the farm itself for the Thursday afternoon distribution, which is just off Joy and makes a good dirt-road bike ride. Winter CSA in Michigan? I wasn't expecting to be impressed, but I am.

The kale is amazing, the spinach is huge, the freshness of everything is unmatched. I've never tasted lettuce like the lettuce I received last week, so fresh and full of flavor I've never known lettuce to have. This farm offers a year round CSA opportunity and we are anxious to experience every season with them. Signing up is super simple and prorated, so signing up now will get you a reduced rate since the weeks have now decreased. You can sign up and pay right on their website which is also full of loads of great information about their mission and how they grow the vegetables you are eating. They also follow all standards set by the National Organic Program and do not use any chemicals or substances that are not allowed under an organic certification, although they have decided not to become certified organic. You have to taste their veggies to really understand the freshness and the taste, it's unbelievably fresh. I believe when they say they strictly stick to the organic standards and am comforted to know that I am feeding my family fresh, healthy, chemical free food! I would definitely recommend a full share to anyone, even if you only have two people in your family. It's easy to go through your veggies in a week. CSA shares are structured as follows: Full Share- pick up every Thursday or Friday at your choice of two locations. Half Share- pick up every OTHER Thursday or Friday at your choice of the same two locations. We currently have a half share and I am going to try and upgrade. BEST CHOICE WE'VE MADE! Thank you SunSeed Farm.
