Dewar's - Museum tour

Taking a tour of a distillery, brewery, etc. is always a good time in my book. And the Dewar's…read moreWorld Whisky tour at Aberfeldy is no exception, especially when it ends with a taste of a 26 year old spirit straight from the cask. This is a smooth operation. Show up with your group, purchase your ticket and you're on your way to learn about the Dewar's brand and the historic Aberfeldy distillery (owned by Dewar's which is owned by Bacardi). Our tour guide was polite and a tad soft-spoken, but still completely knowledgeable about all things whisky-making. After 15 minutes or so in current distillery, you head over to the 100-year-old historic distillery, full of casks and a tasting room. It's here you learn how Dewar's cuts its blends with plenty of grain alcohol (don't they all?) and adds in caramel coloring for consistency in the look of its blends. It's really interesting if you care how your favorite spirit is made. And just before you head back to the bar/cafe/gift shop, you get a dram of 1988 Aberfeldy straight from the cask. Definitely everyone's favorite part of the tour. Glen Cairn glass included -- nice!

We did the tour a step up from the basic one so we could have a souvenir glass to take home & get to do some tasting straight from the barrel. Love the self guided tour and enjoyed the behind the scenes tour even more. Our tour guide was wonderful. After doing our tastings, we enjoyed some of the food there on site. Omg, it was so tasty! The owner was there and chatted with us for a bit. Love the history and the customer service here. We don't have another distillery to compare this to but it was one of our favorite stops on our Scotland trip. :)

We were looking for local breweries and found Allanwater. We arrived at noon mid-week and were…read moreseated immediately. We were offered tasters of each brew and settled on two we liked. Very good, very unique. The young gentleman serving us was very informative about each beer and how they were made. He even recommended a great local place for lunch. Recommended for sure!

I've also just discovered it's now called the Allanwater Brewhouse! A group of us visited here on Saturday night. I'd never been to Bridge of Allan but was pleasantly surprised at what a nice area it seemed to be. The brewery is off the main road and it can be a little confusing where to go but thankfully we stumbled through the right door (look for people milling around in the beer garden, and then go in there!). Inside it's a pretty interesting space to sit in - high ceiling, lots of beers adorning the walls as well as beer paraphernalia and a cosy, well worn vibe. For a better description of what it's like read Jenni G's review! We ended up sitting right by the fire (which, although it wasn't on was still warm) on beer kegs with cushions which was a really cosy spot. For a Saturday night it was busy but not heaving so it was good to be able to get a seat and have a chat without it being too noisy or cramped. I didn't go up the bar myself so can't comment on the staff or prices, but they seemed to have an interesting selection of beers (mango) and I enjoyed my oj & lemonade (haha!).

Dalwhinnie Distillery - Barrels blacked from generations of aging

Interestingly, its now owned by Diageo which is known for their Johhnie Walker Blended Whiskey. The distillery is located near fresh spring water and abundant peat from the nearby bogs. It is also the highest distillery in Scotland, sitting in the mountains of the Highlands. The history dates back to the late 18th Century and though its changed owners multiple times you still get a deep sense of tradition. They have aging barrels stained black from generations of whisky sitting around as decoration. 30 Year Old: 11 quid a dram, they told me they are never going to use the specific combination of barrel, temperature, timing so this batch was very special. I finished it so much the glass looked like it was brand new when I gave it back. There's also a large giftshop with clothing, accessories, home goods, foods, and of course a multitude of different Whiskys. They also had an interesting "bottle your own" 12 year with custom label for 130 pounds.

This was a good decision as you never know how long your journey will take while traveling throughout the various parts of Scotland. They have a tasting room inside and many interesting offerings to explore. The prices may seem high at first but it's because they are pouring a lot more than the usual 25ml pour. While they have a lot of flight options, we chose to build our own with options that are only available at the distillery. Why try something you can get elsewhere. I love that they were paired with chocolate. That really set the experience a part. I wish they served smaller portions so you could try more, but it was a good experience and we appreciated the knowledgeable staff!
