Last night I was unsure of what to eat for dinner so I casually asked my wife to just pick up something and she did NOT DISAPPOINT. she ordered me the Curry Goat with Rice & Peas and Jerk Chicken. I literally cried as I was devouring my meal. EVERYTHING was PERFECT!!!. This is not an exaggeration, but only a mere testimony. With every bite into the Curry Goat, it felt like I was sitting beach-side in Jamaica by the firewood grill. Did I mention that I was not short- changed, not stuffed, but satisfied; the portions were right on point. Went in for lunch. Front of store staff not welcoming at all. There are "secret" lunch specials not in the menu. Went with a friend and they got our orders mixed up, so my friend had to double back to exchange lunches. If a restaurant is going to serve take out meals that include gravies, they need to invest in take out containers that don't spill said gravy all over the inside of the plastic bag. That's the best part of curry!! Also, if certain dishes aren't available all the time, then menus need to reflect this! The food was edible, but nothing to right home about. read more

Since my first review, I tried again and have loved it every time. Maybe they just had an off day with the way it was prepared that day. They oxtails are my favorite, the jerk chicken is a close second. This place can't handle a lot of people coming at once, as they get overwhelmed and slow. But it's a mom and pop--not a chain restaurant staffed with 10 employees to a shift. The family is always pleasant. I'm willing to put up with a wait here and there. read more

This place is definitely a takeout spot... the restaurant is decorated strangely and seems thrown together, but don't let it fool you.. THE FOOD IS GREAT. Order the stewed chicken... they give you a huge serving, plus beans and rice and plantains. I also highly suggest getting a side of Mac n' cheese... you can literally cut it with a knife, it's more like cheese and macaroni.. there must be a pound of butter in there. Living in Brooklyn for 5 years has really made me particular when it comes to Caribbean cuisine. Recently I've moved to NJ and I wanted to find a good spot. I've been to this place a few times now and I must say it's pretty darn good. Curry goat is my favorite dish and is what I usually order. The give good portions and the curry has a little kick to it. However I have also tried the curry and jerk chicken. Overall I like the curry better than the jerk. The jerk just wasn't spicy enough and the pieces weren't very meaty. We went here for lunch. This place is a hole in the wall. The food was really tasty and the owner was super friendly. I had Fish with veggies and my Husband had Goat curry with rice and peas, plantains. Both tasted excellent. I moved back into the area and me and my girls wanted to find a good Caribbean food joint so we gave this place a try as I remember eating there over 11 years ago when I was in Bloomfield College. I found a tine from a plastic fork in some curried goat I got from Dev's. When I called them to complain all they did was say "We don't use plastic in our kitchen", period. No offer to replace my order or an offer to return my money. I'm lucky I didn't break a tooth on the foreign object. I'm done with Dev's. One star is more than Dev's deserves. read more

I live in the area and wanted to try a new Jamaician spot. I should have known it wasn't going to be good once I entered. The place didn't smell like a restaurant. There was a old stale smell And it didn't smell like any food was cooking. My food was not fresh, the jerk chicken had no jerk and they didn't put plantain's in my container. The food taste good but the portions went from being satisfying to pissed off. When I actually found the restaurant the small portions looked like large ones. Awful.. I got the curry goat roti. I'm trini and know good curry and roti well. The roti was thick and not what I've gotten at other "jamaican" restaurants before..definitely not in Trinidad. I know there are different curries out there, but I hated this one. It was a dark orange color opposed to yellow. I took 2 bites and my mouth was on fire. I didn't ask for pepper. I tried to eat it cause I was hungry, but the flavor and the roti was awful. I bought 2 curry goat rotis (hoping to have the other for lunch the next day), but I threw a roti and a half in the garbage. I was so disappointed. read more

There are a few Caribbean places to eat within a two block radius of the area. This place is almost always empty, but don't get discouraged because the food is good!...or at least what I get. I love their Jerk Chicken. Would love for there to be an option to substitute the rice and peas for one of their sides for a small charge and not the general price. Also it may take some time for them to notice that a customer is in the establishment because the workers are mostly in the back. Overall respectful service and good food. read more

I did love their food but the service is TERRIBLE they don't tell you they ran out of something even though you've called ahead of time and they make you wait an extra 20 minutes and they are just plain RUDE. I came back for the abuse because the food was good (shame of me) but honestly I would rather spend money elsewhere. This is the LAST time I will eat here. I waited for ONE hour (I called and came 30 mins later bc they said 20 knowing it might not be ready. Guess what it wasn't). They say they ran out of oxtail. I was annoyed because I called ahead why didn't you tell me you random out when I HEARD you ask if they had some and they said yea. Then I'm waiting 30 for the rest of my order. I get it look in my bag and only see one Pattie. I called for 2. They lady I asked first was so nasty saying "I didn't take your order". Ok well tell the who did WTH. She comes and hands me one saying $2 (I already paid and they CC Limit is 10). I kept saying I ordered 2!!!! And they make a big deal about it! I left the damn Pattie. The food tastes excellent but the bones need a little more meat on em!!! The place has a hole in the wall decor style, but that doesn't deter me. The people behind the counter seem friendly enough. Today I ordered oxtail dinner for lunch the meat was tough and under- cooked, I called and ask if they can change my order to brown stew chicken and they told me NO and that it was not there problem or concern and I could not get my money or an exchange. I will be calling health department on them for serving under cooked beef. don't eat here unless you have steel teeth. read more

Unbelievable, unwarranted rudeness. This was the first time I had ever visited this restaurant, but my friend had eaten there a few times so we went. It has been my experience with neighborhood Jamaican restaurants (at least those in Paterson, NJ) & also from Jamaican friends that Ackee & cod fish are usually only available for breakfast. So when I saw it on the menu, I was happy. I wanted to make sure that they were still serving it since it was the adternoon. First, when we entered the restaurant, we had a to wait a few minutes before anyone came from the back to take our order. I politely asked the woman, who looked hot & aggravated, if they were still serving ackee & codfish or was it only for breakfast. She looked at me & said in a low, nasty tone that it was on the menu & it's not for breakfast & there is no breakfast & they're not even open for breakfast. Wow. Was that called for? First of all, how do I know when & what they serve? We went there on a whim & it was my first time. Second, is that how she talks to customers? A simple "yes" would have sufficed. I couldn't believe the quickness & ease with which she was so nasty with someone who has done nothing to her personally & she doesn't even know. And she was shameless & comfortable doing it. I did not cause a scene because a.) Ignorant people & behavior like that can't be reasoned with. She felt good about what she did & that's the small world she lives in, &b.) My friend goes there often & I didn't want to burn bridges for him. So he paid the bill & we left. Now, on to the food which should have at least been excellent given the filthy, nasty customer service. First, the entire bottom of my dish was layered with rice & beans, so you only get the illusion that you have a decent amount of cabbage & ackee & cod fish. In reality, there was only a thin layer of each. The ackee & cod fish was too salty & overly peppered. I've never seen so much black pepper in that dish, & I've had it numerous times before. Plus, it tasted like they added Old Bay Seasoning to it. Who does that? Everything else was mediocre at best. In conclusion, I will never patronize this business even if someone else is paying. I don't recommend this restaurant at all unless you like being spoken to disrepectfully & you enjoy eating over-spiced mediocre food. There are too many other good Jamaican restaurants to bother with this little one. They never have to worry about my feet darkening their doorstep in this life or the next. read more
