This place was absolutely delicious. Definitely giving it five stars when it comes to the food. (Besides the passion fruit juice tasting like tap water) The drinks were amazing however it could've been stronger for the price. Everyone at my table, enjoyed their food and their drinks. The service wasn't super fast, but it wasn't slow. The waiter was more than happy to accommodate when and where needed. The downside of this place is it can be a bit cramped and extremely loud. I could barely hear myself think I had to text the people sitting at the table with me because we could not hear each other at all. Food was delicious! We ordered Shrimp Wontons and Bacalao Bites as appetizers. We had the Jerk Chicken and Oxtail tacos. All of these were so tasty and the perfect dish. The restaurant ambiance is chill and the music is all types of Caribbean. My 3 stars is for the service. For a Wednesday night, they only had one server to manage the whole floor. Took a while for us to at least get waters. The bar was super slow to get drinks out. When we go our appetizers we asked for side plates and that took a while. They ran out of oxtail for my friend's dish so she switched her order to Jerk Chicken. We had to remind them for napkins twice. Tip was included which is really annoying when the service doesn't match a guaranteed tip. Maybe we came on a night they were short staffed but I hope it's not like this if I do come back. Me giving it two stars is me trying to be nice. Ordered the oxtails, jerk chicken, rasta pasta and black rice. The Rasta pasta had a weird taste (Leave that to NYC.) The black rice wasn't good either. The oxtails had absolutely no taste whatsoever. The jerk chicken was the tastiest thing but it didn't taste like jerk chicken either. (Nor was it jerked/smoked properly.) The oxtail was tough and seemed to be cooked without using any salt. Thank you for trying to consider my blood pressure but oxtail should taste like SOMETHING. It was also the wrong color, I was expecting it to be stewed properly. Good stewed oxtail has some sweetness to it. It was pretty bad. Either hire actual chefs who know how to cook or take things off the menu that you don't know how to make. In yall defense, I'm told the appetizers are better than their entrees.... Definitely take that black rice off the menu. Definitely learn how to jerk chicken quarter leg. Definitely season your oxtails at least 24 hours, use brown sugar, ketchup, ginger etc.... I'd heard a lot about Bacchanal Junction, so I was excited to try it out. Located along the border of East Orange and Bloomfield, it can easily be missed when driving past since the area looks residential. There is a small parking lot that gets full pretty fast on a Saturday evening, so parking on the street may be the only option. Upon entry, I felt like I had been transported to the tropics. Caribbean music was popping (at the perfect volume), and the decor was certainly serving island vibes. Our server, Phil, was attentive, knowledgeable, and pleasant. He made many great recommendations since it was our first time dining there. To start, I had the garlic parmesan jerk wings, and this was one of the best things I ate all year. The wings were crispy, juicy, and all of the flavors melded together perfectly. Plus, the order of six had an equal number of drums and flats, so it was good for sharing. The wings are included in the happy hour specials, so I will definitely be back for them. The cocktail that I had was a 10/10. The lychee lagoon was sweet, but not too sweet, and had a lovely subtle fizz from the prosecco. I also tried the rum punch, which was fantastic as well. It was fruity but packed a punch with the blend of Caribbean rums. The specialty cocktail menu is divided into sweet, spicy, sour, refreshing, and dessert sections, so there is something available to fit your mood. For my entrée, I had the stewed kingfish with black rice and plantains. The fish was tender, the plantains were perfect, and the black rice was flavorful. The portion was sizable, so I had plenty to take home. My partner had the rasta pasta with chicken, which was also a huge portion and tasted fantastic. I wish Bacchanal had a dessert menu because I would absolutely have loved to end the evening on a sweet note. At 8 pm, the live DJ comes and plays a variety of music, so it would have been nice to have stayed longer to enjoy the vibes. I think they have a lot of potential, want them to get batter so they can stick around. The oranges NEED some good places but unfortunately right now this place is just avg. I've visited a few times and tried the wings, the salmon bites, fries, plantains, jerk chicken, and on one visit my friend tried the jerk salmon. Generally speaking the service is okay, ambience is open and spacious with carribean flags and colorful interior , and the location makes sense for what they do. The food is okay but I think they can work shop it a little more to be great. The wings are good, crispy and the sauce flavors are good. No soggy wings which is always a win. I like the way they slice the chicken for the jerk bc it makes it easier to eat but I think takes away from the flavor and authenticity. The jerk flavor It could and should def be better. Rice and peas were okay. Over all didn't give me what I expected from a jerk chicken meal. I think it important to get this elevated a little more bc if a person can get better from a family member or a random hole in the wall... they will. The plantains are good as in perfect ripeness for the maduro and they seem to cook them well but they always seem a little less than fresh like they make them in batches. The fries are not good and any restaurant whether fast casual which or fine dining should have good fries if you have them on the menu. If you don't have the time to make them good, take them off. Frozen fries are unacceptable. Drinks... just average. My friend didn't like her margarita, she asked for a spicy marg and there was no spice. Second time we even asked for more and none. Mine was drinkable, a little syrupy but not gross. Maybe consult a mixologist to balance out the cocktail recipes. Salmon bites are good when not over cooked. The sauces mix as you're eating and creates a yummy tang and my friend really liked her jerk salmon. They turn into like club/lounge on some nights hence the location. We were greeted and seated as soon as we came in. Our server was Paris and he was an absolute gem, full of smiles and very courteous and attentive. He suggested the house redrum sangria and we both enjoyed it very much. We ordered the calamari, it was fried too hard for my taste but the accompanying sauce was really good. With us being such a big group we all had a set price of $50 which included 1 speciality drink, appetizer and an entree. I can't really rave about the food because it was mediocre. I will say I wish I remembered the name of our waiter because he was honestly the best. Some staff are great--Tristan is always kind and professional, and there's a female bartender (I don't know her name) who's incredibly talented. But today I dealt with a bartender named June who was rude, condescending, and acted like he didn't understand basic English. Whether it was intentional or not, it made the experience frustrating and uncomfortable. Ironically, the barback is more helpful and knowledgeable than the bartender--but he doesn't bartend. Now the food was the only thing that needed a little improvement. I ordered stewed king fish with vegetables & a side of macaroni & cheese. Sooooooo...I had a 9pm reservation. Got here at 8:55 and seated immediately. It was packed and busyyyyyyyy! The waiter eventually came, I ordered and waiting almost an hour for my food. I was hangryyyyyyyyyy. They had to start moving tables to make way for the dance floor and the owner noticed I had been waiting a while and looked overrrrrrr itttttt. So he assured me my food was coming and also offered me a drink drink on the house. So I got a lemon drop. Now I'm not even a drinker, I can count on one hand how many drinks I've had this year and those were wine!!! But that lemon drop was goodt! Eventually my food came out and was nice and hot. It was ok. I want to go back when it's less busy and try more. The Rasta pasta honestly taste less like Rasta pasta that I'm used to and more of a cheese sauce pasta. The fried salmon was ok. It had some type of ketchup type sauce under it. If you like tangy sauces you may like that... The other fish which they gave me for free I think was either shark or cod fish. It was ok. They allowed us to change pit seats and even took changed the undesired meal with no issue at all. They didn't show not one ounce of impatience with us which was so nice. Vibes were very good and if living in the area would probably be a nice spot to sit at the bar for apps and drinks with good music. Finally made it to Bacchanal! I was underwhelmed. There's parking behind the building for those concerned about parking. The ambience of the establishment is gorgeous. We were greeted by the host, a gentlemen who had to be the owner he explained a little about the establishment and where he purchased his local shark for the shark bites. We were intrigued and had to start with the shark bites. He mentioned his drink creation that included the mezcal and I was sold! The drink brought all the flavors together of the mezcal with pineapple, it was refreshing but remember mezcal is smoky. My friend ordered the pineapple kiss pisco sour and it was just not tasty at all. Our server according to the receipt her name is Nae, she was unfortunately uninterested in our table or any of the tables it Seemed because she took our drink order with appetizer and when she returned with the items she bolted so fast we couldn't even give her our entree order. We eventually had to ask for her to place the order as 15 mins had passed and still no sign of her. The shark bites were flavorless in my opinion. Usually when you try something unhinged your like it tasted like chicken. This tasted like nothing.. the flavors added were from The sauces on the plate which the green sauce was outstanding!
