As a young, single woman, the procedures that I had were expensive, even with insurance, and I was glad that his office offered to let me split payments and work out arrangements. I even wrote this glowing review of your office on Yelp: "...after visiting his office a total of five or six times for follow ups, I can say that it's one of the best. Dr. Waxman is very nice and very gentle and very willing to explain things and make sure that you are not in pain..." I held his office in high esteem and, before January 2014, would have said that Ms. Laura Gonzales was a big part of why his office works so well. Laura was the person I interacted with the most to schedule appointments, make payments and discuss bills. She was always professional and even friendly. Until Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, when I had a very unpleasant phone exchange with an obviously exasperated Gonzales. She was rude from the get-go, telling me that I needed to pay approximately $122 immediately. I wasn't aware that I had a remaining balance, since I'd already paid the office so much while the procedures were being done and sending a couple of checks after the fact. (Another reviewer that Yelp "didn't recommend" had a similar experience with this office.) Gonzales was short with me when I asked if I could settle the bill for less, since I had been out of work for months. (Other providers have been willing to do this.) She offered to take off $22. I tried to negotiate more, asking her if she would accept 50 percent of the balance, and she snapped, huffed, cut me off, raised her voice and did everything but call me names. In short, she was rude. Very rude. She was nasty. She belittled. She was snarky. She threatened to send the bill to collections when I tried to explain that I couldn't pay $100 immediately. I asked to speak to someone else and she refused. Eventually, she hung up in my face. I called back and again asked to speak to someone else and she spit out, "I don't know what else you expect me to say!" I'm sure Gonzales has worked for this office for a while and that she was normally competent at her job. Before that phone conversation, I would have said that she was an asset to your office. I don't know if Gonzales was having a bad day, or if something was going on outside of the office, but $100 should never make a person act as rudely to another person as she was to me that day. I'm not arguing that I didn't owe money, or that I shouldn't be expected to pay the money. (I settled the balance over the next 4 months.) I'm arguing that the manner in which the money was collected was unnecessarily harsh, rude and dehumanizing.

He explained that there were certain things she had to do before we could move forward and schedule the extractions. The front desk staff, Shannon specifically, was also phenomenal. From the moment I called to place the appointment and asked her many questions, to when we arrived, and she helped get us checked in and settled, she was great. Very friendly and personable, but also very knowledgeable and professional. This dentist is obviously very popular based on the amount of people that were there. However, even though he was running behind, the staff kept us informed and were still very efficient. But despite that, he did not rush us, and he answered all of our questions. If you need to have any teeth extracted, and you find him on your own or get a referral, I would not hesitate to reach out because it was a very positive experience, and we definitely feel more comfortable about returning when my mother is ready to have her teeth extracted.

The examination itself felt very rushed. The doctor briefly looked at my upper right tooth using a tongue depressor and spent about 5 minutes discussing possible extractions. Normally, a dental mirror is used for proper examination of teeth, so the lack of a proper instrument was concerning. I also requested an evaluation of tooth #13 (upper left), and I was told it would be included in the report. The entire visit lasted about 10 minutes. They told me that the treatment plan would be sent later that same day.They told me that the treatment plan would be sent later that same day. Afterwards, I had to follow up multiple times over 5 days to receive the treatment plan. When it was finally sent, even the tooth numbers were incorrect. In particular, for tooth #13, the doctor had clearly stated in person that the condition was very poor, not salvageable, and required extraction. However, in the report this was reduced to a mild statement such as: "the patient reports intermittent symptoms of discomfort associated with tooth #13." Overall, the experience was rushed, poorly documented, and disappointing due to a lack of attention to detail and communication.

After doing a fair amount of research, I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Abel. During this initial I was able to get all of my questions answered and was given a clear understanding of my options and associated costs. It was also apparent to me right away that Dr. Abel knew how to keep my smile looking natural. The initial work was completed and the results beautiful! In the years since, I have continued to have extensive work done to repair and replace old crowns that were failing and I always go back to Smiles By Design because I know that they will go a great job and stand behind the work. In my case today it was for a simple cleaning (still something I didn't look forward to). It just so happened that I found myself free from an early afternoon meeting and went to my appointment 45" early (why not get this over with). I arrived and was quickly welcomed and entered in as a new patient. I was lucky in that a previous cleaning appointment had not arrived so I was quickly shuffled into the flow and almost immediately taken back for my cleaning. I believe the Hygienist last name was Kelly. She got me set up, immediately went to work. I was very pleased with the manner she did her job. Nice attention to the small details but in a way which was gentile and not stressing me out. I was relaxed and, for a change, really enjoyed the experience. Dr. Gartner is the best dentist I've ever seen; and the receptionists, dental assistants, and the other hygienist, Rose, were always terrific. One day I had a cleaning scheduled for 8:00 AM and Christina was the hygienist. Before I was in the chair she asks why I'm seeing her today. I said to get a cleaning. Then she presses me why I didn't schedule an appointment with Rose. I have no idea where she's coming from or asking me how I ended up with her. This was the day and time that was scheduled, what more can I say. When scheduling a cleaning, I've never been asked or given a second thought about who the hygienist would be. I thought it would be whoever is working the day of the appointment. It really felt like she was pissed off and she made the atmosphere weird and uncomfortable. During the cleaning she started to gag me and I raised my hand to signal that I needed a break and she angrily asked me if I have a gag reflex. I said yes (I mean who doesn't??), and then she smacks me across my shoulder and says "why didn't you tell me before we began". This experience turned me off to Chesapeake Periodontics. I've never been treated with such unprofessionalism and disrespect and will not return.
