It's really hard to review this particular business. I've come here a handful of times, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. Your experience will mainly depend on what it is you need. They don't have a really large selection of games, but if you happen to find that one game you're looking for then you're definitely going to be happy. The staff here are friendly enough but kind of slow. If you need something to be fixed you have a 50/50 chance of getting it done. I do make it a point to support independent video game stores, so give them a chance and see what they offer If you are a gamer in the area. read more

Shopped this place with my 13 yo old son who is serious video game consumer. This place has a large library of retro games and consoles. Particularly impressive because it's a fairly small space. They also have a nice room to play games. Friendly and helpful staff. I loved they took the time ti talk with my boy and ask him his sought after games. We browsed and found a couple of games - one of them - Animal Crossing - in great condition. Worth visiting again since used games tend to arrive in cyclical fashion. This place is just fun to browse. The owner has a collection of games and game systems all the way back to the first days of video gaming. It's like visiting a games museum really and it made me all happy nostalgic. He is an encyclopedic reference guide for all things video games, chat him up and you will have a blast. Its not too often I can talk with someone who remembers the old Commodore 64s and very first Ataris. Good times. His setup here is great, they have a gaming setup with plenty of systems and seating for each so you can check out any of the games before you commit to buying. They also have a list of get togethers where you can come in and compete with others in real life if that is your thing. The owner hooked my husband up with some gadget thing that has improved his Call Of Duty performance. I will fess up I was a bit zoned out about the whole transaction but my husband has been thrilled ever since. Thats good enough for me. Destiny Games has what you'd expect from a video game store - consoles, new and used games for those consoles, and accessories. But there's a lot to set them apart from the competition. The first thing I noticed when I went in there was that the guy working there (the owner?) was outgoing and made me feel welcome. I told him I wasn't in to buy that day but he still wanted to talk games, and not in a condescending "I know more than you" way. Another thing that sets Destiny apart is that they carry old games. Games I played 20 years ago on the NES, and even older than that. I think the old games still have a lot of value and I'm glad to find a game shop that agrees. The prices on used games seemed pretty good, and they say on their website that they'll match used game prices with "other major used video game stores." (I think I know who they mean) I'm happy to see a locally owned alternative to GameStop, who more or less owns the used video game market. Not only did they act bothered and tried to ignore some of my questions, but every one I asked was met with a smart aleck response. .In addition I was with my two black friends and I did not like the way the older guy was grimming (profiling) on them from behind the counter it made us feel very uncomfortable. At some point it became Gamestop's business plan to stop carrying vintage games (anything older than PS2 and Xbox 360) and it forced me to roll the dice on eBay and pay a lot of money for shipping and handling per game. Now with Destiny Games I can browse a huge selection of games and pay a reasonable price. I can't give this store 5 stars because I do feel like some of their SNES and NES games are a bit high, however the staff is very friendly and knows there stuff. When I come back home to Michigan I make sure I load up on Xbox games because the prices are so low! read more

My husband and I go in this store quite often and always enjoy the visit. He is a collector and I have found several rare retro gaming gifts for him here at conditions and prices that were better than I could even find on eBay. When I can't find something, they have a service that allows you to attach your phone number to a game, so that if someone trades it in, they will call and notify you. Some of the negative reviews on Yelp call out their staff as being rude. I haven't personally found this to be true, but I highly suggest that you speak with Chad or the owner, who obviously love what they do and have both always been particularly helpful and fun to talk to. read more

I have been going to Destiny Games for over a year now. I have never gotten bad customer service. I'm always greeted as soon as I walk in the door, as long as they aren't busy with other customers. Even then the workers ask me how I'm doing and what brings me in. The experiences that I've had are very personal. I've talked video games with just about everybody that works there, and they even know my personal preference. (I'm kind of a regular, can you tell?) I drive from Brighton to go to Destiny because when I went to the local store, I got ignored when I walked in. I have purchased 1 new system (PS3 slim for my boyfriend), 1 used system (80gig PS3), and multiple games for anything from NES to PS3. I have not had any problems with any of the games or systems. I took some of my DVDs and CDs that were scratched and got them resurfaced. They have worked like a charm, since. I absolutely love the LAN center that they have set up there. You can buy time to play on one of the systems. Its not expensive at all. If you have a game that you're thinking about buying, but aren't sure, you can play it at the store. I really appreciate a video game store that when I walk in, I feel welcomed. Even when it was my first time there, I felt that way. read more

I have been a collector for over 20 years, since before there was really a retro gaming market. I have been to many retro gaming stores, flea markets, garage sales in Southeast Michigan and some in other states and Canada. To date, I have found many more gems at Destiny games than anywhere else. They have a fairly extensive collection going back to the 70's and are friendly and knowledgeable. There is no other comparable brick and mortar in the area. Ask for Chad if he's in and you won't be disappointed in the service. To my knowledge, Destiny Games is the only place in Wayne County that sell old-school games and systems. Going there is a rather nostalgic experience as the store is covered with old SNES, Genesis, and Dreamcast games, etc. It is also nice to know that there is a place besides the internet where you can still find and buy back some of your childhood memories. The customer service here is amazing, with a very knowledgeable, friendly, and honest staff. I was in the store once when a customer came in, planning on buying a new AC Adapter. Before selling her the adapter, the seller/(owner?) ended up telling her about an alternative method to get her system hooked up. The customer was very happy about the information and left without a purchase. Although some of the reviewers here have received defective games, I personally have never had a problem. And from a perspective of someone who used to work at a Gamestop, let me just say that it is nearly impossible for a store to test every single game they buy, there is simply too many. Gamestop certainly doesn't test their games- only the systems. I am pretty confident that the amount of defective games based on ratio found at Destiny Games is really no different than at any Gamestop. Lastly, I personally just like to support small business, so I will usually go here before anywhere else. I've been there twice. Both times the service was excellent and staff was very friendly. First time was because my xbox 360 wasn't working. After a failed attempt by my husband, they fixed it. They wouldn't warranty it because it was meddled with from my husband. Which stunk, but I understood. 6 months later the xbox was broken again. I don't think it was anything that was the fault of them. We bought our xbox off Craigslist so who knows what kind of condition it was really in before we got it. For $50 more, they offered me a brand new factory sealed xbox with warranty. I've been very pleased. read more

I almost never write reviews for places or items, but I had to after visiting Destiny Games today. I was cleaning up the house and wanted to get rid of some NES/SNES/N64/PS2 stuff since they never get used anymore. I found Destiny Games via google search and decided to give it a try, even tho it is an hour drive from my house. It was WELL worth the trip. First, the staff was polite and they enjoy talking about video games with the customer. Second, when it was all said and done.. they gave me probably 4 times the amount I had expected trading all this stuff in. I guess I am just so use to that other video game store with the strangle hold on us. But Destiny treated me great. As I said, I drove an hour to get there and I would do it again. These guys are great. I just wish this was a chain or I had one closer to home. They have a huge selection of games from every era/genre. And once again, the staff was awesome.. much better than my experience elsewhere. Keep it up, and I plan to make the trip back again sometime soon. read more

I've been going here for a long time since I live close by. The people are normally friendly and are somewhat helpful (although I've felt a little talked down to a couple of times, like I didn't know what I was talking about). The issue is that they have a very small selection. It takes them forever to get in new stock. I've also heard rumors that they repackage collectible games in modern boxes and pass it off as the original box (I can't back that up though). I've been going to Destiny for my used games for a while now and I've not been disappointed. I would recommend this shop to any of my gamer friends, because the prices are just right. I also can't say enough about the quality of the games I've purchased and if you think the game is just a little to scratched they will buff the CD for you. Yes the space is a little smaller, but they pack it tight with games from most consoles. I've also had a lot of good experiences with the employees. gotta say my last visit here has left a bad taste in my mouth. brought my ps3 in for repair back at the end of November because it overheated. was told about a week, took around 3 with no calls or updates. when I picked it up the two guys behind the counter were BSing and ignoring us. when i spoke up, one of them told me, he wasn't on duty and continued to ignore us. eventually the other guy came over. I've used my "repaired" ps3 maybe a half dozen times (mostly to watch Netflix) and it just died again last week (not even 3 months after it was fixed, and barely even used). took it back in today and was told that I was out of luck cuz it's been more then 30 days and it would cost me $50 to fix it, cuz he would do me a favor and waive the $25 diag (you know cuz it's doing the exact same thing it did before they "fixed" it). that's $175 and I was told that it might die again after this repair. I could of sent the unit to sony and had it fixed right the first time for $150, but I wanted to support my local store. walked out and bout a refurbished one at game stop. not sure how destiny can sell refurbished systems if they cant even guaranty a repair. read more

The Good: First let me start by saying that Destiny Games has really good customer service. I have always been greeted when I go into the store and the staff is always happy to help. When talking to you they never give you the feeling that they are better than you if you aren't a hardcore gamer or don't know every little detail about gaming. The Bad: Over the past few months I have gone out of my way to go to Destiny Games because of their customer service, but the products I have gotten from them have been less than ideal. First purchase was a used game I bought that didn't work. I took it back and they cleaned and polished it but it still never read in my system. In the end I got another used copy that read fine but it took 4 trips back and fourth from home to the store to get it replaced. My second purchase was for a Xbox 360 repair because it got the red ring of death. After a week I got a call that it was fixed and I could come pick it up. Once I got home I plugged it in and not only was the red ring of death still present but now none of the fans weren't working. I paid $75 to have the rrod fixed and the fans "boosted" but in reality I paid to make the system worse off. Yet another trip back to the store. After explaining the situation the employee gave me the impression that he didn't believe me. I showed him my receipt where he made some comment about how he wasn't supposed to take it back because my system didn't have a Microsoft sticker on it and that the repair wasn't guaranteed. Which I can understand if it worked once I got it back but I don't believe in paying someone to make the situation worse. I can do that for free with a hammer. In the end he ended up taking the system back to re-repair it. This time it worked great or so I thought. After a month the system has failed again even after spending the extra $25 to get the fans "boosted" to make sure that it wouldn't overheat and die again. Third purchase was a used game that worked great. Forth purchase was another used game. When i bought it they pulled the game from behind the counter, put it in the game case, bagged it, and I left. Once home I found the case was in really bad shape and broken and the disc had permanent marker written all over the top of the disc. It did work properly but the sad shape of it would have stopped me from picking it up because it was a thank you gift for a friend. So I am unhappy with %75 of everything I have spent money on there. Maybe its a fluke and I just happen to get bad products and repair but after all the trips back and forth and the failure rate of my purchases it will be a while before I get enough courage up to try them again. This pains me a little because, like I said, great customer service! read more

BUYER BEWARE If I could give negative stars, I would. Rude, liars, horrid customer service. We purchased a game system from them; the gentlemen took out all parts (which were all raveled in rubber bands) and briefly showed us the system. We purchased it and took it home. When I went to unravel a controller at home before I even unwound the rubber band once, I noticed the wires were completely damaged gnawed and torn apart. Naturally this was very upsetting as its already a commute to destiny but we decided to simply request they exchange the damaged controller they sold us for one that wasn't damaged. Well, my husband went in there the next day and the employee flat out accused my husband of damaging the remote. He said that they check every single system and piece of equipment and that there was no way they sold it to us that way. My husband insisted that the rubber band was wound over the damage hiding it from us and that maybe someone missed it & could we please have another & still the employee blamed him and after calling the owner said we could purchase a used one for $8. So my husband left with the broken controller and I returned the next day to confront the owner. He also accused me of damaging the remote and I politely informed him that A) If I damaged it I would simply buy another as the confrontation was already uncomfortable, B) Someone intentionally put the rubber band over the damage so that we wouldn't notice until we got home C) the remote he gave us didn't match the set D) I was being 100% honest with him . He then began coming up with various excuses and lies to try to make me go away or purchase the other used controller they had, "I took this one in personally" "we never take them in when they look this way" etc. Because I was so upset that they did this to us, I refused to accept no as an answer and kept respectfully insisting they gave it to us this way. He finally exchanged the controller "just this one time" which is fine, however the customer service I received was horrid. Who blames and accuses customers? He continually lied and rudely accused me of lying. They were so incredibly rude to us throughout this whole situation & it is obvious that they gave us the damaged controller so that they could sell the other one on the floor and make some money off of it. Side note: the controller they sent us home with after the exchange was soooo unbelievably filthy and had sticky brown stuff all over it.... Yes it was better than having a damaged cord but still... I can't believe he tried to sell me that controller. Why in the world would I give someone $8 for being incredibly dishonest? This situation is upsetting because I once loved destiny and would suggest it to everyone I know but this has left an incredibly bitter taste. Just be wary when you purchase anything used from them, check it at the store, UNRAVEL the cords there at the store, or you will be accused and refused an exchange. read more

I'm 33 and have been playing video games since my parents Atari 7800. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I know what I like and what I'm talking about for the most part. I went in there tonight looking for a used controller for an older system that I had in storage. I walked in and all 3 employees were gathered around a computer, watching YouTube videos. While they did greet me and ask me if I needed any help, they proceeded to tell me what I wanted instead of listening to me and helping me with what I actually came in there for. Apparently I didn't look the part of a "gamer" so I must not know anything. After telling them several times what I did want, and them proceeding to tell me that I really didn't want that, I just walked away and looked at their other selection of games and accessories. One of the guys looked up from the computer and said in a very condescending manner, "trust us, we KNOW what we are talking about". The selection of games was actually decent for the next gen systems and old school systems alike, but based on the customer service, I'll never go back and just go back to ordering things from the Internet. Hello "yelpers", I just wanted to take a little time to drop a quick few words on Destiny Games of Canton Michigan. I loved this place from the start. I am an exclusive retro gamer only and this place was heaven for old school retro nerds like me. They have a comprehensive library of damn near EVERY console, with games and accesories to support them. The store is stocked, and set up according to console, which makes it very easy to find what your looking for. From commodore and atari to the wii, xbox 360 and literally EVERYTHING in between. The other main reason I shop there is the customer service. It is second to none. For the most part, their staff is attentive, helpful , accomidating and informative, without sounnding elite or condescening, as some collectors or "old school gamers" tend to be. Ted, the owner has a vast, encyclopedic wealth of knowledge on whatever you throw at him. I call often for weird or obscure questions I cant find the answers to on the internet, or from friends and to this day, I have never stumped him. He is a real gem and the backbone of this place which completes the shopping experience and leaves you wanting more. I live in ann arbor, and all we have here is a store called Get Your Game on, which is NOWHERE near the quality or quantity of Destiny. Get your game on has a small amount of retro games, but when you take a closer look, there are literally 10 copies of the same tired sports games from SNES, SEGA and more. How many of the same sports game can you stock and expect to sell. They RARELY get new inventory and when they do, the prices are all over the map and in NO way consistent with the current market. Sometimes, I think they just randomly price items, who knows. Either way, it is worth the drive form anywhere in metro Detroit. You will NEVER have this experience at Destiny. Their prices are fair and often lower than ebay or craigslist. I only have a few small gripes with Destiny. 1. When you pick up any cartridge box on the shelf you want to buy, when your ready to check out, you take it to the front and they retrieve the game from behind the counter. But the problem is, they KEEP the cartridge box and only give you the game, which isnt great for me because I collect games and want the whole package. They are the ONLY resale shop in the metro area that does this. I have been to MANY other shops around lower MI and they ALL give you the box, so thats one thing. 2.They do not pay you for any of your consoles or games, they only give store credit, which I dont get. And 3. The thing I dont like the most is they only give you 20 % of what your tradeins are really worth. Even if you bring in an oddesey 2 with ALL the games and could be worth some serious coinage, they ONLY pay you a small fraction of what its really worth. So, the higher the worth of your trade in, the more you get hosed. With these small gripes in mind, I give Destiny Games of Canton a 8.5 out of 10. Great job, guys!! read more
