I've been taking adult open classes here for about a year and find that most evening and weekend classes tend to be crowded, so try a weekday daytime class if you can. There's street parking on Wisconsin Ave and side streets or discounted parking in the Giant Foods garage (remember to get your parking validation from the receptionist). While the faculty each have their own styles, all the ones I've taken from are top-notch instructors who were former (or are currently) professional ballet company dancers. I think I've finally figured out the five levels for adult classes, which are not as they're labeled, IMO: - Beginning 1. For dancers in their first couple years of ballet study, or who are rehabbing after not dancing for 1+ years. The teacher will explain ballet terminology. - Beginning 2. Not actually for beginners. Full barre and center combinations. - Advanced beginning. If tombe-pas de bourree-glissade-saut de chat is in your muscle memory. - Intermediate I. Dancers are doing double-plus pirouettes. Petite allegro can have jumps with beats. Combos are more intricate, challenging... and FUN! - Intermediate II. You'll see some dancers en pointe, and pros occasionally drop in. The class moves fast, where the teacher doesn't even have to fully demonstrate the combo yet everyone knows what they're doing. Fouette turns. If you're on the fence about which level to attend, I recommend trying the safer/lower level first, then moving up as you become comfortable. Overall, TWSB is a wonderful place to take ballet class in the DMV area!

There's plenty of room to dance (unlike Zumba classes at gyms that pack in more than they can accommodate). I took off one star just for the volume - wish the music could be toned down a tad, though it's no louder than any other class in the country. This is by far the most cost effective and friendly dance studio in town.

Today was Day 5 of the Dancing in the DMV. This institute also shares their lovely space as a daycare/summer camp for the neighborhood children. The institute has been home of some of DC's elite dancers who gone on to train at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. The staff were welcoming and the faculty was very clean. Restrooms fully stocked and smelling fresh because that's so important. There are a set of elevators if someone is unable to take the stairs. Beautiful inside. Nestled right in the park rd area of uptown DC. There's a parking garage located at 3100 14th street, one block up from the institute. Very reasonably priced and takes the worry out of getting a ticket.

I'm somebody who believes that my instructor should be GREAT b/c it shows me, very tangibly and visually, what to strive for. If I'm supposed to mimic you and I am not impressed with your skills, that is not at all good. You can't tell me how to be great, you have to show me. We did some barre work and then put together a short routine. While it was quite chill and all levels are welcome, it wasn't what I was looking for. I'm looking for rigor. I'm looking for someone to point out all my flaws, make me stronger, and improve my form so that I can be a better aerialist. I want great lines, stronger muscles, and to become a better performer. I don't see that at all happening with that ballet class. If you're looking for something easy and chill, then this is probably a fine ballet class. I might be interested in taking the hip hop class or something else, but I'd rather sell off my pass. All that being said, would anyone like to buy my pass from me? Seriously. $40 for 6 classes or best offer.

I've had the pleasure of seeing many of the company's performances and it is truly beauty en motion. They are impactful, emotional, and dazzling masterpieces. Their performances took on new meaning when my god-daughter started training at the Washington School of Ballet. She had years of experience under her belt, but this school challenged her body in new ways. After a few short months of intense training, her technique was elevated. Additionally, the opportunities associated with The Washington Ballet are vast. I was aiming for the beginner class, although they assessed my level and suggested I was more at the intermediate level, so I went with that. Teachers were polite, welcoming and encouraging! They demonstrated the steps, we practiced, they made slight suggestions and answered questions to make sure we were grasping the material. What I really appreciated is that they did not over explain steps. We covered a lot of material in a class session and it was really straight forward. Then open rueda and social after the class. I am still somewhere between beginner and intermediate, so the open ruedas are still a bit overwhelming, but in time I will feel more comfortable! Highly recommend!

Matthew was a fun, energetic, patient teacher. Even when my kids and a few others were running around, it did not bother him one bit. I really enjoyed partnering with my son and daughter to create a dance or set of movements. You do not have to be an experienced dancer to enjoy the class, as the movements are very easy to follow and create. I broke into minimal sweat and felt like I had completed a light workout after 90 minutes. Good for all ages and levels or fitness. This is a good class for families, seniors, and kids all at the same time.
