Cake that was pre ordered by a regular customer (been going for 8 years ) - this was the custom cake that was $50 and not ready when it was meant to be- took the owner "4 minutes to ice the cake" when my father arrived. There is no icing and does not even say "birthday" we could have walked in to acme and asked them to write on a pre made cake and it would be better quality. When called to ask if there was a way to fix the cake to be what was ordered which was "a floral theme with a plot of big flowers" The owner hung up the phone and said she had a wedding cake to focus on- that this was an imposition and that "next time I'll put extra flowers" Is it just me - but I see zero flowers and the thinnest spread of leftover icing that is on the top of the cake. Rudest woman and after repeat service for 8 years this was the worst service- since we paid for a cake i can't imagine that the service of providing the cake is an imposition. Will never return. I just want to put this out there so you can all see what your custom cake will show up as - Go ELSEWHERE. That's no way to run a business. read more

Desserts By Design is a custom bakery whose name suggests its real strength - the ability to take custom orders for cakes and pastries for special occasions and create exactly what you describe in full flavor and color. On the other hand, if you are a walk-in retail customer desiring something off the rack and on display in the glass cases, it is rather a hit or miss experience. I stopped by in the mood for a great brownie or exceptional fruit bar from the skilled hands of the proprietress, but found little to chose from on a Friday mid morning. I asked about the brownies and was told she would be making them today. Maybe she meant they were in the oven and would be out shortly (I hoped)? No. She just repeated that she was baking them today. Not helpful, but clearly an indication that I was bothering her. Sorry. My bad. So, I looked around and purchased a vanilla frosted yeast donut, red velvet cake donut and a raspberry French pastry twist stick. $7.50 for the three. I lay the cash down and walked back into the morning rain. It took me more than a day to sample my acquisitions, but can now report that they were a mixed bag (of donuts). The vanilla frosted yeastee was good; plenty of nice sweet frosting and a fresh superstructure beneath. Yet, the red velvet was in a state of advancing staleness and was a dry bite and chew. Coffee washdown was essential. Looked better than it ate. On the third hand, the raspberry twist was excellent; flaky delicate with a lovely buttery pastry surrounding the mildly tart red berry jam. Could have eaten more of those with genteel gusto. While I won't be rushing back to DBD, I will pass the word along that you can succeed there only if choosing carefully. Consider yourself advised! So I went into the store today to buy something sweet I saw these pastries. They looked pretty good, but it was not. The pastry was very hard, and there was very little filling inside of it, it seems like these pastries are at least a few days old and also there was flies in the display case I do not recommend eating from this establishment. read more

Rip off. Only came to this bakery after looking it up on Yelp and seeing that they have a check in offer of buy 6 cupcakes get 6 free- which was the only reason we stopped in while in the area. When we checked in, we got our deal and went to get the cupcakes. We mentioned the deal to the cashier and she said it was old and she doesnt honor them anymore. Like really,? why bother still having it on there if you wont honor it. We were annoyed and ended up not buying anything, cause that was our main reason for stopping in. Desserts by Design did our wedding cake. They were the recommended vendor from our venue so we figured we'd try them. I am so incredibly happy with their work! Not only did they make the most delicious wedding cake ever (complete with two layers of cannoli cake and one layer of red velvet cake), but the cake was gorgeous! My favorite part of the cake, and the thing everyone commented on, was the two little paw prints that they added for our dogs. The cake was beautiful and tasted amazing. In connection with a social gathering at our home, we recently had a butter cookie taste test and Desserts by Design earned third place honors. The competition included butter cookies from Feasterville Family Bakery, Leonardo's, Rilling's, Swiss Haus Bakery. Chosen as for the test was the flower-shaped butter cookie with the chocolate center, which all of the bakeries offer. First place honors went to Rillings for its cookie's relatively soft crumb and clear butter flavor. Our quibble was that the center dollop of chocolate was a bit sweet and hard, but overall it was a good cookie. The other first place winner was Feasterville, whose cookie is very delicate and nearly disintegrates on the tongue (like any great shortbread). One has to carefully transport Feasterville's cookies because they easily crumble in transit. Again, the chocolate center was a bit sweet and hard. Both Rilling's and Feasterville could elevate these cookies to epic status by replacing the chocolate frosting with a bittersweet ganache. Second place went to Swiss Haus Bakery, whose butter cookies are a perennial household favorite. The Swiss Haus version is much firmer than either than Rilling's or Feasterville's and it is less sweet. To its credit, the Swiss Haus cookie's chocolate center is neither as sweet nor as hard as the first place bakeries' versions. Swiss Haus's cookies are sufficiently hearty to transport with little breakage. Desserts by Design had a credible entry, which earned them third place. The cookie had a delicate crumb but lacked any butter flavor. Where these cookies failed was an unattractive milk-chocolate-looking center that was not a consistent color throughout and was irregularly shaped. It also was far too sweet and hard. Much to our chagrin, Leonardo's version ended up in fourth place. While Leonardo's makes exquisite rustic breads and phenomenal cannoli, its butter cookies are just too hard and lack any butter flavor. read more

We contacted them to schedule a tasting which they were more than happy to schedule during a time that worked for me. They were super pleasant and had so much available for us to taste! We used this vendor because our venue was offering the cake for free if we went with this bakery. When I scheduled a meeting on the phone for our consultation/cake taste testing, Josanna didn't seem too friendly. She did not charge my Mom extra for coming to the taste test with my husband and I which was nice (originally it was an extra $20 or so for an extra person). In the venue's package, they include red velvet, which was perfect, because that is what we wanted for our wedding cake. When we explained our vision for the cake, she stated that she would do the bottom layer as red velvet and the next two of pound cake, and then the top layer as being red velvet. She didn't explain why this would be the case, and we did not want our guests to have two completely different types of cake, so we decided to just go with chocolate chip pound cake and raspberry pound cake for the guests, and a red velvet couple's cake for us. We also originally wanted the cake to be dyed blue to go with our theme, to which she stated that she couldn't give a price to how much that would be, since it depended on how much dye she needed.... so we decided to skip that as well. The inside of the bakery seems a little run down, and not many bakery options to work with. Upon research, we discovered that the reason why most bakeries will not do a multi-tiered red velvet wedding cake is because the cake is too moist and will crumble and break (hence why she mentioned the pound cake), but she never explained that to us and even though she tried to steer us into the red velvet and pound cake combination, she originally said she would do the multi-tier, but she should have explained why she didn't recommend doing it and we would understand....) Now when it came to payment, there was no parking in the front of the store, and had to park to the side of the store. Parking was extremely tight, but I know that isn't the store's fault itself. I gave Josanna my check and she said "What's your name?!" and I asked if she meant my name since I was using my Mom's check which has a different last name and she replied back with an attitude "Yeah...." The tone was like "DUHHH". I was going to purchase cookies while I was there and decided against it. On the actual day of the wedding, once I saw the cake, I liked that it had sparkles on it, but the stars were a silver color, not a champagne color like I originally requested. The red velvet couple's cake was good and moist. However, my Mom and a couple other guests told me after the wedding that they thought the pound cake they had was very dry. Overall, I'm not too pleased with this bakery and would search elsewhere for your wedding cake needs. read more

Based on the reviews, I think I was expecting more than what I experienced. There are certainly a variety of pretty desserts, and I have only tried the cookies, but I wasn't impressed. I ordered 6 holiday sugar cookies, and was at first shocked at the $7.00 price tag, though I told myself I wouldn't mine if they were worth the price. I didn't find that they were. The cookie was absolutely tasteless, and COVERED in sugar. I gave the cookies as a gift to family and asked their honest opinion, and they thought I made them (which isn't saying much! haha).
