The Studio is located in the former post office, a landmark building in the heart of downtown Westport. The modern history of the town dates to Colonial settlers in the 1600s, and by the early 20th century, it had become a magnet for artists, musicians and writers. Today, Westport is known as an attractive place to visit, with natural beauty and abundant shopping and dining. Upon entering the Studio, visitors will be captivated by the Light Cloud of more than 100 pendant fixtures billowing over the grand staircase. The Swatch Wall, displaying 300 of the thousands of fabric choices available, provides a focal point and is itself a colorful example of beautiful design. Throughout the space, sofa collections, lounge chairs, dining chairs, tables, desks, rugs, lamps and accessories are arranged in 20 fully realized rooms to help customers envision how pieces could work in their own homes. Task chairs are amply represented, along with storage, workspace and outdoor solutions, some of which are displayed on large terraces outdoors. The Studio is staffed by a team of friendly and knowledgeable account executives eager to provide a host of complimentary design services including one-on-one consultations, in-home visits and plenty of help measuring and dreaming. Design Within Reach is the source for smart solutions. Our business started when our founder tried to furnish his apartment with the classics he'd come to appreciate while living in London. What he discovered was that acquiring these clean, simple and well-designed products was neither clean nor simple.
There had to be a better way, so in 1999 we bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn't for 24 hours, until we realized the nighttime answering machine had been accidentally left on.) The rest, as they say, is history. By giving customers access to these items, which are brilliantly conceived, simply executed and consistent with the enduring principles of modernism, we made design within reach.
