Color correction, thank you so much, Jen! My hair now looks healthier and more vibrant. Her magical touch restored my hair color. I'm beyond thrilled with the results and feel like a new person!
I was looking for a new local hairdresser after years of staying with the same one and as a lot of you know, it's not easy to find someone who can meet every hair need, not to mention having all the right vibes, considering the hours you end up spending together in just one session. Well lucky me...after googling and yelping for best hairstyling reviews in my area, I found the fairy godmother who is now making my hair dreams come true. After an initial hair consultation with Design by Jen to discuss my wants, I returned for my appointment and left feeling beyond pleased with the outcome. My color then ended up surpassing the usual expiration date of 3 months before becoming brassy, and (get this...) 6 months later I came back for a refresh, NOT because I needed to, but because I would be going out of the country for the following 3 months. My 2 visits with Jen has won me over and I'm so happy to say, my search is officially over
It is really hard to find someone that can cut curly hair especially nearby. I live in the east bay and have traveled to different salons in San Francisco for a good cut. I was searching for something that I didn't have to cross a bridge but that understands what curly hair needs. Jen was able to cut my hair in the layers it needed to give it volume. She also asked about styling and took into account my daily routine. This is my second time with her. Last time I did the full cut experience with the deep conditioning. That was a relaxing and therapeutic experience that left my hair nouti This place was recommended by my close friend who has her hair dyed here. I would def recommend this place for curly hair.
You never disappoint! You manage my expectations so I always feel heard. I requested cool blonde balayage, you delivered! Thank you for making special accommodations for me with scheduling. You are amazing inside and out! Cheers to seeing me for the next decade!
Jen works her magic with the hair, whether it be a cut or color, she knows exactly what to do. I got my haircut by her in Oct 2023 and loved how it came out! She colored my hair last week, it was the first color I'd had in years and she did not disappoint. We had a consultation before she colored my hair. I am seriously in awe of her work! She took her time and really built in the color and layers to create dimension. The best part about Jen? She is local! Love that she is based in Hercules. Lots of parking in a beautiful part of town. I spent a few hours with Jen last week and didn't even notice, she is so easy to talk to. So many reasons to book your appointment with her!
Jen is so sweet! She always has a good attitude and always makes me look good! I love my hair! Thanks Jen!
My gray hairs are getting more noticeable. I don't want to cover my natural grays, but I want to enhance and blend them nicely with my black hairs. Jen used her skills and experience to make the perfect hair method concoction. Not only that, her studio is nicely located at Hercules Waterfront, and is very inviting. Thank you Jen for a great experience and for fixing my hair.
I don't think I have loved my hair color this much. The colors are so perfect! Ms. Jen of Design by Jen is like a fairy godmother of hair colors.
Full highlights for me and my mom. This is our second session with Jen. We were impressed with balayage last year and this is even more amazing. The highlights were gorgeous. Jen really follows what you want and will not disappoint you. She is very nice, patient, and competent. She really takes time to know what you want to achieve and will deliver the best for you. We highly recommend Jen. Love you

My daughter's haircut by Jen! She is so thrilled about her new hairdo and it was her first time feeling pampered at a salon! On top of it looking more healthy, she gave it a much more wavy, natural and framed her face so nicely :) The space was also very open and inviting. Plenty of sun, relaxing music and Jen's friendliness and patience :) Thank you Jen for taking your time in adding more life to her hair!

Jen will be my colorist forever! I like a very low maintenance and natural look. I wanted to grow my grays in gracefully but instead of a nice pattern, my grays are all at the crown. It just wasn't a good look. Jen fixed color that was done previously. Removed the brass and now it's a beautiful cool, mushroomy dream. I will only be doing my color with Jen forevermore. read more

Jen is truly a master at her craft. No one has ever come close to getting to the color that goes well with my natural grays but.. Jen has! My hair went from an orangy-brass to a beautiful gray blend. Love it, thanks Jen! read more

I don't have before pictures but it's been a million years since I got my hair styled. I messaged Jen through Yelp and she was quick to get back to me about booking an appointment on her super efficient website. I had really long virgin blackish hair and asked for a layered cut with a low maintenance type of color so maybe a shade of brown that's closest to what my natural hair color was. I love how the cut and color turned out. She made a suggestion of adding really subtle highlights and I think the results were gorgeous. Felt a tad more confident after I left her cute salon/spot. Will absolutely come back. I'm so glad I found a quality salon close to home. Thanks Ms. Jen read more

Jen is such a skillful colorist and hairdresser. She was able to accommodate me on last minute changes, and was very prompt on getting back to me. The salon itself is bright, clean, with great views of the water front. There's a cafe (HizCafe) right next door, which is very convenient if you forgot to pack snacks for those lengthy hair sessions. She is such a sweetheart! She made sure I was comfortable, and even applied a balm to my nape to prevent irritation from the dyes. My sensitive skin thanks you! In the end I was super happy with my hair. She was able to achieve the look i envisioned. Thank you again! read more

I've been in search to find a new and better hair stylist especially near my home for convenience. After my research and reading reviews, I chose Jen. I loved the way she examined my hair and was honest with what it needs due to the damage from the coloring and my neglecting it. Before doing anything, she asked me what I wanted and my approval to how much to cut and do. She recommended the mask and keratin treatments that she guaranteed better health for my hair. I have an upcoming keratin treatment that I'm excited for my hair. She's a keeper! Her honesty is the key and it's not for just the $$$ she wants. We forgot to take a picture of my "before" hair. Thank you, Jen! read more

OMG when I tell you I have gone to countless hairdressers and have paid literally THOUSANDS of dollars on cut and color, the only person that I have truly enjoyed and felt like they have understood my vision was Jen. I went into for a haircut and I was very vocal about keeping my length (I fried off my hair after going platinum blonde a year ago and am scarred over short hair lengths) and how I wanted choppy layers and curtain bangs in the front that blended in, kind of like Sabrina carpenter. She looked at my face shape and knew what type of style would look good on me and I am OBSESSED with my haircut! This is my most complimented haircut to date! She's very communicative and really listens to her clients to achieve a desired look, constantly checking in during my cut to achieve my desired look. I went to her about 2 years ago when I fried off all my hair and when I though I had no hope to make my hair look any bit attractive, she ended up cutting my hair in layers and it completely hid any blunt pieces of hair that had fried off during the bleaching process. She's amazing and I can't recommend enough! read more

I've always been envious of women getting fabulous cuts and styling, but the salon was just too far for me. I found Jen through local Facebook group in Hercules this year. I couldn't believe that she was minutes from my home. I booked her right away and more than impressed with her level of skill. I explained the style I wanted and beyond impressed and so giddy that I finally have cut that I've always wanted. This is my second cut by Jen and I found my forever stylist. read more

I just moved to California and needed my hair done badly! Jen not only cleaned up all of my dead ends but gave me beautiful highlights! In all my 40 years, this is the first time I've left a salon this happy and excited about my cut and color. Not only is she incredibly skilled but she's also very welcoming and personable. I will definitely be returning. read more

When I had my consultation with Jen 2 weeks ago I was nervous because I knew I was asking for a lot and giving her a mess to work with You see I've been coloring my own hair at home for many years now and lord knows when the last time was that I've had a REAL haircut!!! This was all thanks to my life as a mama to 4 kids and a healthcare provider! Jen is truly a GEM and someone who will listen to what it is that you are seeking. She will be very honest with you and hold what's BEST for you and the integrity of your hair rather than just doing what you want and taking your money. She told me that anything IS possible but sometimes if the integrity of the hair is going to be compromised she would rather save the hair and NOT do the procedure. With that kind of work ethics I KNEW I was in great hands The Salon is right by the waterfront in Hercules and next door is a little cafe so if you're having a long process like I did, you can just order your food and drinks and have it delivered! I would not hesitate for a second to recommend Jen to anyone looking for a complete NEW change like me starting with a major haircut cutting at least 6" off the bottom and adding lots of layers and then all the different coloring procedures!! Jen had to do a color correction because of my years of self coloring at home, grey root coverage, balayage and then finally face framing highlights I told you I was asking for A LOT but look at the MAGIC she was able to create!!!! Pure talent and artistry!! read more
