I was seriously craving Indian food while visiting Omaha during Memorial Day weekend, and luckily,…read moreKarnali was the only Indian restaurant open nearby that day. We reached the restaurant around 3:30 - 4 PM for a late lunch, and there were a few people dining inside. The restaurant was very clean, the tables were well arranged, and the Indian music playing in the background gave the place a nice cozy vibe. We started with the tandoori chicken and then ordered garlic naan, butter chicken, and two chais for the main meal. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, but it was different from the typical restaurant-style tandoori chicken. It tasted more homemade with regular spices, without the bright red color or smoky restaurant flavor. Still, it was really good. The best part of the meal was actually the sauce served with the chicken. It tasted like a spicy tomato-onion gravy, almost similar to butter chicken sauce, and honestly, I wish the butter chicken we took later had been cooked in that same sauce because it was delicious. The butter chicken was tasty overall - rich and creamy, though the garlic naan could have been better. The naan felt a little too dry and could have used more butter. The chai at the end was ok because it had a bit too much spice and tasted more milky than tea. The service was decent as well. The server was friendly, but while taking our order he wasn't writing anything down and had to ask us to repeat a few things, so that was a little awkward. The food arrived in about 10 minutes, which was pretty quick. One thing to note is that we had to place the chai order along with the food because the server mentioned it takes around 15 minutes or more to prepare. I did feel that the pricing was slightly higher compared to the quality and portion sizes. The tandoori chicken was around $17 ,the butter chicken was about $19 and the Naans $4 each and chais were around $4 each, so the total came close to $55 + w tax or more. Personally, I don't think the food completely matched the pricing and was mediocre. Overall, I had a decent experience and really appreciate that they were open on Memorial Day because they definitely satisfied my Indian food craving. I would definitely recommend trying the tandoori chicken appetizer, especially with the sauce they serve alongside it. I would give the restaurant a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

It was a Thursday evening and not very busy. Only two other tables when we were there which really surprised me after tasting the food. They started out with the complimentary papadam with two different sauces a mint chutney and a brown sauce not sure what it is but both great. We started off with the naan bread basket and an another garlic cheese naan definitely didn't need more than the bread basket was a very large portion to split. All were very tasty the garlic was my favorite. I had the Karnali combo biryani which was awesome had the right heat I asked for spice wise and good amount of all the different meats. My wife got the mango masala which she really enjoyed and isn't always the biggest Indian food fan but she ate hers and ate the leftovers the next day as well. My aunt had chicken korma which she raved about as well. My mother tried the malai kofta she had only tried Indian food once many years ago and this experience confirmed she's not a fan and has a bad taste palette haha. I really enjoyed this dish as well and was happy to have the leftovers the next couple days. We ordered her some chicken tenders from the kids menu but those also had some seasonings more cumin I'd say and others that she didn't enjoy but our 14 month old really enjoyed. So if you have a very picky eater maybe go with one of the other kids options. The white creamy sauce that came with my biryani was also bursting with flavor and had a great cooling sensation. The man who served our table was very friendly and even played peek a boo with our baby from the register area. Place had a nice vibe and was very clean bathrooms included. Definitely will be back and you should go check out this spot!

The surprise was the Cheese, not certain the type but melts like mozzarella, more than I expected. Also picked up some raitha, salan, and peanut chutney to dip naan. Liberally coated in the spices, the flavor is deep with a hint of caramelization where the sleight char marks are. 2 things: I always like to squeeze a lemon or lime where on mine, so I asked for one. Its citrusy brightness augments the spices. Second, next time I'll ask for more onion to be on the sizzling platter. I love those (similar idea to onions on a fajita platter). Bill went with Vindaloo at the hot level and demolished it. Remembering their dedicated dairy chef, I ordered a mango lassi. Heaven. Silky with sweet blended mangoes, the yoghurt has a satisfying, contrasting tang. Slurped it dry. We also went with Ras malai for dessert. The dairy chef makes his own cheese patties and then they soak and lounge in reduced milk with cardamom and pistachios. Perfect end. Note: they are serious about the heat levels. To be honest, I noticed this restaurant a couple years ago, but was dissuaded from trying it…read morebecause of the upkeep of the surrounding area. That was unfortunate. After a pop-up ad on DoorDash recently, I decided to look at the menu and was very excited to try them out. After running a couple errands, I decided to treat myself to take out, was in the area, and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did!! Now, as a vegetarian, I love Indian food because there are so many options for me. There is one curry that I love but is generally only offered on chicken, sometimes it can be found with shrimp, but Maharaja offers all their curries with your choice of protein!!! That means I can get my sour sorrel leaf curry with either my choice of paneer cheese or they even offer tofu!!! I've never seen an Indian restaurant that offered tofu. Not only that - but when I asked about the medium spice level, the young lady waved her hand and said ehhh medium. I got spicy. I like spicy. This is truly spicy.!!! I'm in heaven!!! And there's a lot of paneer chunks in the curry. The race that comes with it is a fragrant rice instead of just a plain rice, which is nice. I also got the mixed basket Naan. The naan is interesting. It's like a very large, very thick tortilla - almost like a pizza dough texture. Not the light and airy from a super hot tandoori. Delicious but not the usual naan that I'm used to. The fruit naan made me happy because it didn't have the maraschino cherries that most of the restaurants seem to use. For my appetizer of course I got Samosa. The pastry is wonderful even after sitting and getting to room temperature. It's still a lovely texture. The potatoes inside are a little bit more mashed than I would like, but the flavor is amazing. I thought the cilantro-chutney sauce would be disappointing, but I was pleasantly surprised on that as well. Even though it looked thin and creamy, it actually had a lot of flavor, it was quite spicy, and had a nice hit of citrus that went very nicely with the samosas. Maharaja one of those hole in the wall gems!!!!

The Chicken Pulav arrived in a generous portion with beautifully cooked long grain basmati rice. The rice was fluffy, aromatic, and infused with warm spices without being overly heavy. The chicken was tender and well seasoned, blending nicely with the fragrant rice. A squeeze of lime added a bright freshness that helped balance the richness of the dish. The portion was easily large enough to share or enjoy as leftovers the next day. The Chicken Hariyali was the standout dish of the meal. The chicken pieces were coated in a vibrant green herb-based sauce packed with flavors of cilantro, mint, and spices. The chicken remained juicy and tender, while the sauce delivered a fresh, savory flavor profile that was both unique and satisfying. The dish paired exceptionally well with the biryani, creating a great balance between aromatic rice and rich, herbaceous chicken. The presentation of both dishes was appealing, with fresh garnishes and thoughtful plating. Portions were generous, making the meal feel like a good value. The combination of fragrant spices, tender chicken, and fresh herbs showcased the kitchen's attention to flavor and authenticity. Overall, Astoria delivered a delicious meal with standout flavors and generous portions. If you're visiting, I highly recommend ordering the Chicken Hariyali alongside the Chicken Pulav the two complement each other perfectly.
