Temp 134 Gift Shop includes the World's Tallest Thermometer visible from the I-15 whIch states,…read more"Baker, CA Gateway to Death Valley": "Willis Herron was a Baker businessman who spent $700,000 to build the thermometer in 1991 next to his Bun Boy restaurant. Its height--134 feet--was in honor of the 134-degree record temperature set in nearby Death Valley on July 10, 1913 Mrs. Herron & the family of Willis Herron, who died in 2007, recovered ownership of the property in 2014 and stated their intention to make it operational again. The official re-lighting took place on July 10, 2014." Everytime I went to Las Vegas the tall  thermometer faithfully greeted, informed me of the temperature & being on the last leg of my trip to Sin City.  However, I kept blowing it by until this trip after I chowing down massive tasting menus and wine pairings at Guy Savoy and Jöel Robuchon, I needed to actually stop in Baker for a fast food break at the Mad Greek to balance out the ying with the yang.  Took massive amounts of photos of this iconic landmark and felt obliged to purchase a souvenir to help light the Thermometer for even one minute worth of electricity. Friendly, young man was a great raconteur full of informative stories about the Herrons and the Thermometer. He was a great docent in a gift shop that actually was more like a museum for the town of Baker.  Apparently, the owner of Alien Jerky tried to buy this property and then tear down the Thermometer!!!  Wow!  The Bun Boy restaurant was succeeded by a Korean BBQ concern that gave the Mad Greek a run for its money, but went out of business w/ the Corona Virus Covid Pandemic of 2020 and still remains empty.  There is a portrait of Mr. & Mrs. Herron w/ a table of tribute offerings to honor the creator of Baker's landmark. I got a refrigerator magnet that has a real workIng alcohol thermometer which does not depend on electricity for pollution free operation.  The shop is immaculately clean & bright.  There are souvenir t-shirts, baseball caps, books, drinks to keep hydrated on sale. Also, Baltimore Shaved Ice for those unbearable, hot drives thru the desert.  Totally cool gift shop.   Don't forget to see the cast iron frying pan outside to see if an egg can be fried under the scorching desert summer sun.....And it turns out to be fake plastic eggs.   5 stars for honoring a big landmark in a very small town.

I love how the family has continued to cherish the big ole thermometer. It really makes Baker something special! I like supporting a local, family business vs a giant chain. Thanks for always making my stop worthwhile.

This is the home to the world's largest thermometer and Alien Fresh Jerky. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have driven past this place but never stopped. Now, I like aliens just as much as the next guy, but it was one of those places that I really had no reason to top of. But let me tell you, I am so glad that I did. In addition to having probably the largest selection of beef jerky next to buc-ee's, this place has more alien stuff than you can shake a stick at. Honestly, this place really does look like it belong on the Vegas strip with its big LED signs and alien motif all throughout the exterior. Additionally, they are in the process of building a UFO hotel. I'm going to tell you this. I will be there as one of the first guests in line when this thing opens up. Let's talk about the jerky for a second, they're not kidding when they say it's fresh. I have purchased multiple bags here on multiple occasions, and I got to tell you this is some of the best beef jerky you can ask for. It's super tasty, and not like that really nasty hard stuff you buy out of gas station convenience store, this stuff really is fresh. I don't know how to quantify alien fresh, but this jerky iis probably some of the best I've ever had. Tons of different flavors and heat levels for every person's taste. Bottom line? This place Is definitely the place to stop when you're out on the road going to or from Las Vegas from Orange county. Honestly, It's a perfect pit stop.

There's a few alien photo ops, and a lot of the merch and snacks inside are alien-themed. They also have a nice selection of hot sauces. We tried some kettlecorn and some jerky. The kettlecorn was good and comes from Maw and Paws, which has another location around where we live so it was very familiar. The jerky was super tender. Everyone ate it up.
