I too learned of Desert Dragon Pottery via Groupon. Everything was explained thoroughly before, during and after. I didn't have any issues scheduling my one hour beginners pottery wheel class on a Saturday for myself and husband. Together, sitting side by side at our own wheels, we crafted two unique pieces each with the guidance of our instructor. It's a great afternoon date! Something to keep in mind if you're looking to gift your creation, it's a multi-visit process from start to finish taking several weeks: 1)creation 2) paint/decorate/fire glaze 3) pick up final products. Our second visit to paint our creations was also a nice experience. There were a lot of paints to choose from including brushes useful for different designs. Tip: Try to have an idea of the design you want to paint before you go. My husband picked up our finished products, which turned out great. The only downside for me is that I don't have time to regularly go and therefore when I go it's a couple of months in between and I forget what I learned. I wish it was closer. I found out about Desert Dragon Pottery thru Groupon. Wow what a deal $15 for a wheel class. My 8 year old Daughter has been asking me if she could do this. So I bought 2 one for her and one for my son. Who backed out. So my daughter got to do 2 classes. She ended making for little pots. they look amazing. You have to wait over 2 weeks to paint them. When we went back to paint. They were so helpful describing all the different glazes and techniques. She tried several different glazes and a high fire glaze. We are looking forward to going back and making Christmas gifts. They have several different classes, kids classes, and camps for the summer. Which I will take advantage of. read more

This pottery studio is the real deal! I had wanted to take wheel classes for years. My husband found the studio for me, and I was introduced to Mishy, the owner. She's wonderful and has so much experience and knowledge to share! I bought a 6-pack of beginning wheel classes. My teacher was Anita, who is a wonderful teacher. She's funny, patient, and genuine. She works with the students based on their skill level and takes in to consideration each student's physical abilities. Children are even welcome to take the classes. They have different options including Dirty Hands Friday (hand building), Mini Taste of Pottery (30 minute wheel class), Beginning Wheel Classes (60 minute wheel class), and more! I truly enjoy going, and would highly recommend this studio to those interested in a real pottery studio experience. read more

Mishy is so helpful and accommodating to me as an art teacher who is need of a kiln. She handles all of the firing and it takes a good few weeks to get pieces returned, but done right and she has never lost a piece. We did a mini pottery class as a group. We all agreed we would not go back. While the instructors are knowledgeable and the studio is cool, we found them to be rude, bossy, and not fun at all. The cat was the friendliest one. Plenty of other places to do classes and we will take our business there. I was excited to try this place out, and probably would have kept going back IF it weren't for my recent call to the owner regarding my expired Groupon. My Groupon, for which I paid $15, expired just THREE days ago. I called the owner, Michy, and kindly asked if she would still honor the Groupon. My experience went like this: Michy: Desert Dragon Pottery... Me: Hi, I'm calling because I had purchased a Groupon, and--{she cuts me off mid-sentence} Michy: Ok can you hold on? Me: Sure. (4 minutes on hold) I hung up and called back: Michy: I'm sorry. I was on hold with someone else, and then I forgot about you. Can I call you back? Me: Sure. She calls me back and finally I get to ask about the expired Groupon. She proceeded to tell me that I couldn't use it, but that I could get 10% off a class. Uh, no thank you. She, as the owner, had no reason to deny this request. It was 3 days ago that this expired. This shows a lack of flexibility and understanding, and a lot of greed in my opinion. For all she knows, I could have loved the class (which I paid for), and kept returning, or told all my friends about it, giving her more business. So instead, I'm yelping about it. Some people may think I am wrong to be put off by this but I think it was ridiculous for her not to honor my purchase, as well as suggesting I pay more money to this establishment for a class. 10% off. Demanding, ordering, and screaming hysterically are Anita's or Amina's idea of customer service. At this point I'm not sure if she was high or needed to hit her belt strapped weed pen, I just hope that they way she was acting was not her true self. She started out by sharing some nonsense story about her boss making her bacon in a kiln?? My gf nor I got the point of her story so we just moved on. After asking for our names she stated she would not remember them and proceeded to call me Thor. Long story short she yelled at me for wanting to take a picture, which you are not allowed to do bc of social distancing.??? She lost it when I went over to my girlfriend to make sure her clay was centered. This again violated every one of her rules. At this point I had enough of her attitude and decided to try and changed the direction of the afternoon. I told her that so far she was making what was supposed to be an enjoyable moment, extremely difficult. To which she responded by screaming at me "you're done dude, get out, you want me to get my boss? Get out" I asked her to please get her. She comes and I begin to explain what had happened to which she rudely interrupts and says that "she has great reviews, she has thousands of students, and not everyone is a good fit". She offered no help, completely sided with her off the rocker employee. She agrees to refunding us our money and we proceeded to walk out. I was frustrated, so I asked Anita to next time hit her pen a couple of times before class so she could be a little more relaxed to which an old man (whom I believe was brought over as an intimidation tactic??) decided to respond with, stfu and leave, stfu and leave. I can't believe I'm only the second person to rate this place! Anyway, no surprise I went there for the first time on a Groupon for the Pottery Wheel class. They sold a ton (did I hear 2600?) this time. Apparently the Saturday classes are massively booked, but you can still get in on the Wednesday nights. I wish someone would rate them for some of their other classes, or open studio, because all that stuff looks totally fun. You really do get dirty, no matter how perfect you try to be, so as they warn you repeatedly, "wear your play clothes!" I'm 42 and took my mentee, a twelve year old girl (she's very grownup, but just being clear), and we both looovved it. Neither of us had ever used a pottery wheel and could barely restrain ourselves when Mishy (our instructor, and the resident artist at Desert Dragon) kept saying, "wait for me to get to you!" It's really amazing and addicting to get your hands on that clay, watching the wheel spin, and the cool shapes that come out. As beginners, we were warned to prepare to love whatever we made as quickly as possible and move on to the next one because 'over loving' your clay piece can lead to totally messing it up - making it too thin, lopsided and crazy. And as beginners, we each made three pieces that were totally different and I'm not *completely* sure how that happened. :) Apparently when you've been doing this forever (or maybe even for 6 classes or so), you learn to control it all more and purposefully create that look you want. The first thing we said to ourselves when we sat at the wheel was, "I want one!!" closely followed by, "when can we come back? and how?" and the answer is that they have Open Studio time and you can pay by the clay and firings. Mishy warned us that we can come in and play alone but if we do that right away we might be really frustrated because we really needed more time to learn the basics of centering with an instructor around - she suggested another class (or five lol). Since there are a group of us that want to come in, she said that if there are at least four that book together they could set a class just for us and it would be $25 each instead of full price (plus we get our own class, which is totally cool). If that still seems pricey to you - they do have Dirty Hands Friday - just $12 and you get to play with clay (no wheel) and learn/do all the basic clay techniques. I totally want to go! We were told to come back in 3 weeks to glaze our gorgeous creations. We can't wait. BTW, since my husband asked this question, yes, this is waaaay more fun than going to those painting clay places (we're both mentors to young kids, so we've gone more than normal :) ). It's way more fun, beccause you're creating the clay piece. And btw, you still get to paint those clay pieces too! (if you're into that) Oh, and one more thing, they warn you not to go to deep when you are hollowing out the middle - but why not? make a flower pot instead of a regular pot - stab that whole in the middle! just sayin' read more

I purchased a Groupon (well actually two) for a class at Desert Dragon Pottery for my daughter and I to enjoy together. We were very excited to take the class because we had already attended a class at Burst of Butterflies in Chandler and enjoyed it very much. As soon as we had some dates in mind I emailed the owner to set up a time that was about two weeks out. I also stated that I had a second Groupon and would be scheduling another class as soon as I was able to lock down a date. She informed me that the class we wanted was filled already and that the voucher is more a one time session not intended to be repeated. I would think this should be on the fine print of the Groupon. She tried to encourage me to bring two other people along with us when we can schedule a date. I told her that this Groupon was more for my daughter and I to spend time with each other. We again tried to schedule another time for this class for just the two of us and both dates were filled, again, even though we were booking out a couple weeks in advance. I decided to phone her to try and get a time frame locked down for a class. She was very difficult to work with and was still very much so against us coming back for the second class. The Groupon was already purchased and I didn't see why she was making such a big deal out of it. I asked her if she would extend the expiration date since our time was running out and she said she would give us a couple of days but that was the most she could do for us. I asked if she would apply the purchase price of the Groupons toward another class or some pottery that we could paint. She said no. I ended up not taking this class and not enjoying this Groupon experience at ALL . I would never go to her place of business now that I have had the opportunity to deal with her. She runs her business poorly and is very difficult to deal with. I usually don't write reviews unless it is a positive experience and actually didn't have a Yelp account until 10 minutes ago but I felt the need to post a review of this business because I don't want others to purchase a Groupon and not be able to use it. read more

So I noticed several people complained they went and the "staff" wouldn't help them get their work. I pay for a membership which gives me access on days they are normally closed to the public. Despite instructors telling people they are closed mon-tues people still show up. They then find whomever happens to be working on pottery, like me, thinking I'm staff. I'm not. I've explained to people I don't work there and the studio is closed I know other members have had the same problem. Bottom line is if you want to learn how to use the wheel, the place is great. If you want to have free reign in an open studio creating your own work its great. If you want your kids to get messy and be creative, it's great. If you want a clean pristine paint your own pottery cookie cutter place, look some where else. read more

So, I've done the little strip-mall make-your-own-ceramic thingy before, yes, I own a $32 mug. All that I learned is not to try to be too creative 'cause it will cost you an arm and a leg. This is *not* one of these places - if you're looking for a spotless place with a completely sales-oriented staff, this is NOT one of those places. Instead, it is a professional art studio, with all the quirks and creativity that comes with it. There are some very accomplished artists, yet not once have I heard any one make any snarky comments about the beginners - just the opposite. They love having kids there, they love playing with a creative bent. My friend who is learning the wheel with me describes it as a visiting her mom's kitchen. It's friendly and obviously not making a huge profit on their work, and yet are a great resource for an introductory class. I see people older than me, much younger, both male and female and everything else. I hope you have a chance to give it a try! read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would! This business is a joke! I decided to purchase a Groupon from this business for my fiancé and I to have a creative date. I made the mistake of purchasing the Groupon before scoping out the business or looking at the reviews. After I purchased the Groupon I decided to call the business to get more info as sometimes there is "small print" on Groupons. A lady answered the phone... I kindly said "hello how are you" she replied "OK how can I help you?!" she seemed to be bothered, busy or just be an old bitter lady. I asked her how the Groupon would work and she explained that I needed to make an appointment to be in one of her classes. The classes would be a group class and she said she did not have slots open for Groupons until a month out. This was disappointing but I thought "what the heck, I already bought the thing" so I asked her to book us. She made a very rude "ugh" sighing sound and asked me to hold because she was in the middle of something. Totally unprofessional! If she was in the middle of something she shouldn't have answered the phone so that she wouldn't be rude or she needs to get herself a receptionist if she can't handle answering phones! She comes back on the phone a few minutes later, again making rude sound effects (not necessary) how is it I am helping YOU with YOUR business and you want to be rude?! Truly makes no type of sense! Anyhow she gave me a date and time. We were booked for a Saturday morning class and I hung up. At the time I did not live in Arizona and this was a long distance relationship, so I planned my trip to PHX for this weekend to enjoy this date. A month later My finance and I were ready to go to the class I woke up excited and looking forward to having a nice, interesting and fun date. Interesting was all it was! The location was about 40 minutes away from where he lived so we left early just in case there was an inconvenience on the way. We arrived 10 minutes before our booked appointment and upon entering the business there was a class going on with about 8-10 people. We stood at the front desk for a few minutes unacknowledged. After 3 minutes of not being greeted or asked if we needed help, I decided to walk up to the class to ask for assistance/guidance as our appointment was about to start. A lady walks up to me and says "what can I do for you?" Again, rude! I let her know we were there for an appointment and that we have a Groupon. She walks away and as she is walking away from me she is speaking and saying that there is no way that we have an appointment because Groupons are not booked at that time and that she has another appointment coming in at that time. She gets her calendar book out and points to the date. I see my name CLEARLY on there and pointed it out to her. She then says that is not me. I was like "what?!, that is my name on there!" She tells me "It must be another person with the same name" OK, another person with my EXACT name? What are the odds? LOL if my name was Jane Doe, I might agree with her. I felt we were in the twilight zone. At this point I was fed up with her lies and attitude! From the moment she saw us she was nonchalant, rude and unprofessional to say the least. We felt discriminated! I advised her that we didn't even want to take her class and that we would simply like to be refunded the money. She began to talk over me and not allowing me to finish what I was saying. Mind you there is a class going on a few feet away and she seems to not even care about her attitude in front of those people. She blatantly told me she was not giving me my money back and I could re-schedule my class. I told her "ok, so reschedule means you acknowledge this was my appointment" she stayed quiet as if she did not know what to say. That is when I realized this lady is not all there and she is being racist. How can you reschedule if you weren't scheduled to begin with?! So we walked away and decided to call Groupon instead to complain and get the money back. I immediately called Groupon and made them aware of what happened and let them know how this lady was running her business and using Groupon, a reputable company. After being placed on hold for a few minutes (to investigate) the agent advised me that the lady/business owner marked my Groupon as "used" that I had "redeemed" the Groupon. She not only is rude and a liar but now she committed FRAUD! Like really? Anyhow after more explaining, Groupon decided to refund my credit card and it was over with. I would NEVER recommend this business to ANYONE. It was the absolute worst and all I wanted was to have a fun date. Instead it was the worst and the most annoying part was that we drove all that way (40 min) for that type of treatment. Honestly I believe the lady was being racist and discriminatory towards us. I had a bad experience dealing with this place. I wanted a custom piece done, paid her a $40 deposit on a $75 charge and got nothing close to what I wanted. It didn't need to be exact but it had to be similar. She came up with the excuse that the picture wasn't good to replicate it. Desert Dragon/All the Hands is a clay studio unlike no other. The studio is built on a one acre (about) property on a dirt road just off Happy Valley. If you look closely, right when you get off the paved road, you can spot the painted dragon on a 2 story house. This will be to the right of the road, first walled in property to the right. You'll know you're at the right place because you might see some pottery cemented to the top of the wall at the entrance. There is plenty of parking right on the premises. The studio is the building to the left. The door to the studio faces the entrance to the property. The studio itself is more or less split in half; one side for building clay, the other side for applying glaze. In the back of the studio are the firing areas. There you'll find the kilns, including a large high fire kiln, some raku kilns and other specialty firing kilns. There is always a LOT of new students when groupon is offered. Besides the potter's wheels, 'dirty hands' is also offered. You're provided a good hunk of clay and are offered some great instruction on hand building techniques. There are lots of pricing tiers offered, up to and including Open Studio. Overall, the teaching staff is very supportive, knowledgeable and will do what they can to support your creative vision. Most of the 'regulars' are actually very friendly and are usually very happy to provide assistance. The atmosphere is very free and open. Like someone has already mentioned, wear your play clothes and be prepared to get dirty. read more

This place needs a negative star review. We get there, wait around a while, and then the "instructor" comes out- some pompous, arrogant kid who says to the class "pay attention because I'm only doing this once and don't want questions" so he throws the clay and at the end one woman asked a question and he just gave her a look. Moving on... My husband needs some help and the kid comes over and throws his clay down so hard it gets all over my face and into my eyes and contacts- which he doesn't apologize for- and I get up with burning eyes to wash my hands, which I get yelled at for doing. After that, I need his help with my pot, and he comes over and starts making a great looking pot with my clay which I wanted to use and kinda put my own touches on it- which I say and at that moment he says "you know what else I can do with this pot?" And he SMASHED it and told me "this is my art and I can do what I want with it." And then proceeded to tell me to clean up. After that, again, he is pissy with everyone about needing to wash their hands, literally yells at one woman about washing her hands and then says to her "if you listened to the directions I wouldn't have to yell at you, would I?" Oh. And he says you can't even keep whatever you make "if you can even make anything" the whole pottery part lasted like, 9 minutes max and after that you can glaze someone else's sloppy pottery. Which, the lady who explains it will talk to you in a condescending tone for forty five minutes about how to properly glaze and "not ruin her buckets" all for the 3 seconds it took to actually glaze. This place has disgusting people in it. My husband and I both mentioned that we had never met such arrogant, pretentious people. You guys make clay pots, you're not Michelangelo. Get over yourself. If the owner reads this I recommend to you to clean house and find some employees who make your business worthwhile, otherwise it's just a joke people find on Groupon and never come back to. read more

I bought a Groupon for my daughter and her friend (both 10 at the time) and they loved it! The class was small and the instructor was very helpful and patient with all the students (most children). The girls loved that they could both create and paint their own pottery, instead of just painting like most pottery places. My only complaint is that it is SO far from my house in the far southwest Valley. You have to make three trips out for one piece of pottery (one to make it, then to paint, then to pick up after it's been fired). Regardless of the location, we'll be back! read more

I really wanted to enjoy desert dragon but my experience was just negative and continually got worse. I bought a series of 6 classes and am appalled at the lack of customer service...as one of the other reviewers said the instructor Anita continually had her hands on my work...she said I was "sassy" and seemed frustrated that the process on the wheel did not come easily to me. I assured her I was completely comfortable if my pieces didn't turn out...but she clearly was not. Her attitude was short and demeaning...she never told us to put the date on our work which made it extremely difficult to find to glaze, she yelled at me once for not cleaning up properly...I thought I had and had she properly instructed me on the process I would have...Mishy, the owner clearly had an issue with her customers...she complained out loud after taking a phone call with what sounded to me like typical questions from a perspective customer. Neither one of them ever addressed me by my name, in fact, each time I went they acted like I was a complete stranger! They are both extremely unprofessional! I still have one class left and have no desire to step foot in that studio ever again! read more

I am VERY disappointed in my experience with this company. In fact this is the first review I've ever written on YELP, that's how much I want to express my frustration. My friend and I purchased a groupon for the one hour pottery class, and the ability to paint a premade pot at the end of the class. Everything went well and we had a good time. We did the class on a Saturday afternoon, and they told us our pots would be available for pick up on the following Tuesday. I went to pick them up after work around 5pm. Upon walking in, four employees were chatting a few feet away from me. I was not acknowledged or greeted for over 5 full minutes. FINALLY one of them asked if I needed help (obviously), I told them I was there to pick up our pots. Their response was " we are not open today, you need to come back," what?!? The big sign right when you pull in says "open daily!" I saw the pots we painted less than 5 feet from where I was standing, I pointed to my pots and nicely asked if I could please take them with me now. They REFUSED!! I was beyond shocked! I went out of my way to drive there, and they wouldn't let me take MY pots that I PAID for that were sitting right in front of where I was standing?! I left feeling very upset. I don't even want to go back now to claim them, especially since they don't even abide by the hours that they set!! No wonder the entire backyard of their building is FILLED with "unclaimed pots," they don't even let people pick them up! Completely unprofessional, stay away! read more

This is a true pottery/ceramic studio. Not one of the small places you find in a strip mall. I went in for a Friday evening "Dirty Hands" session. I knew what I wanted to make (street #'s to go on our home). Finished them in the time scheduled and very excited to go back and glaze them. Even though calendar show classes available they really aren't available. Planned and outing based on the calendar and got an email 2 days before the event that the only opening would be at least 3 weeks away. When I finally got ahold of someone that works there she said it is not her job to keep up the calendar because she is busy with other things. Very disappointed with the customer service or lack of. At first I found this to be a place where I could do ceramics and have fun with my kids. I thought that the people were kind and gentle folk but after being in the studio atmosphere for lengths of time I found that they didn't know what they were doing and became quite rude. Many of my pieces got broken while payed workers & the owner were moving them from place to place. They had a drummel tool grinding area in the middle of the of the studio w/out any ventilation (dangerous and would not pass inspections). Many of the glazes weren't what they said they were and hardly ever got made when empty. They ruined over fifty of my pieces in the glaze firings and always said that "that's the nature of being a potter ". Guess what? It's not, I studied pottery and ran studios before. Their facilities aren't even properly licensed for business I found out. Another thing that was annoying was that one of the owners, Michi, quite often set up and played her guitar and sang while people were trying to work. Much to the chagrin of all and scaring many away. In short, they are good for taking children to, to learn how to begin making pottery (if you're willing to take the chance they won't catch silicosis) but beyond that, they don't know how to run a professional, high quality studio at all. This is my absolute favorite place to relax and create something, pottery or otherwise. They have both pottery wheels & paint-on-pottery that has already been molded. You can hand-build stuff too. The Groupon deals are fantastic if you are on a tight budget. It is tricky to get here the 1st time--make sure to google and know you are driving a short way (2 blocks?) on a dirt/gravel road into what looks like someone's backyard because, well, it's someone's very large backyard. read more

I've read a number of reviews here and wanted to address some of the nastier ones. I spent a LOT of time at DD. A LOT. This is such a fun place. Note I said "FUN", not "spotlessly clean" or "perfect". They do get crazy busy sometimes, and it seems to go in waves - 20 people will show up at once all wanting their pots! But if you've never worked on the wheel or done slab work before and live in the north/west valley, you really ought to try this place out. You will have a blast! Mishy Katz, the owner, knows more about clay than most people will ever learn. They do high fire, mid-range, and raku fires; teach wheel and hand-building classes and offer open studio for studio members. There are a bunch of wheels and tables and soooo many glazes. But you have to realize, this is a busy, WORKING studio, run by a private owner, not a school or a conglomerate. If you come at a super busy time you will likely have to wait a minute to get your pots. If you show up late to a class is it really fair to make everyone else wait while you get caught up? Then you are taking time away from their instruction, which they also paid for. I spent many many hours and days here when I first came to this part of town and was working a full time corporate job; these days I have my own home studio and sell professionally. Mishy was a huge help then and there are still times I will confab with her, or run over when I need an emergency bag or two of clay and the supplier is closed. This facility is low quality and ruined many of my pieces of art work. Over firing a high fire kiln and collapsing it on more than 50 of my pieces. After doing so they offered to give me a month for free and a bag of clay. Hardly enough to cover a few of the pieces let alone all of them. They also don't refill their glaze buckets and instead prefer to play guitar in the middle of the studio even though they have been told that the glazes need replenishing. I left a cart filled with sand for making hand built platters and it came up missing. (a huge effort to dispose of because it was heavy) Also, many pieces that were still green (dry but not fired) were moved and broken by members of paid "professional" staff and they didn't offer any compensation. I have been in communication with the Better Business Bureau about this matter. D.D.P. has come back and said that I owed them $625 for studio use since May!! Funny but I hadn't even been there to use the facilities. The last I knew, you had to use the facilities if you're going to get billed. They also said that "it is posted EVERY WHERE that you can only keep pottery pieces at the studio for 90 days" I used the studio for months and never saw one sign saying this any where. I also personally know artists that have kept pieces there for a half a year and longer with no issue. I have heard many other people complain about customer service, that they lose their pieces and that they wish that the woman who plays the music would stop or at least ask if the people working would like to hear her play. In short, because this is only the tip of the iceberg, I guess what I am saying is that I think this is an awful place to go to for any type of ceramic studio work. It is sad that there isn't another place for such studio time, with good people running it. just don't go here for a good experience. read more

i took my mom and two daughters and we had an initial great time. i bought the groupon and called to find out when to come in and there was really nothing to it. you just walk in and hope for someone to address you. it's very laid back, almost as if you are walking in to someone's home though. it's not really a warm fuzzy place. it seems like a diamond in the rough. we had good instruction though and everyone in our party got to make two pieces each. it is a clay studio so as was advised earlier, dress accordingly. here's where i think they could use some business advice. when we left they said the items needed to dry "in a few weeks" and to just come in after that to glaze. "do i need to make an appointment?" " no, just come back and glaze them later." truth be told, we waited a while. we finally showed up three months down the road and i did expect the items to be long gone, which they were. but here's where i think this place is lacking. no one mentioned that the pieces would be thrown out at a certain time. the items left after 90 days are piled up on a table. i thought, ok, i'll sort through them. at first the lady said not to touch the table and then she said i could look through them (with my 7 and 6 year old looking on with sad puppy eyes). i started to pick things up and go through them and the lady went back inside without a word. there's no where to set anything though while going through everything and it's very precarious. once to remove something the whole stack moves. my thought is, these people are on a huge piece of land, get some crates and put the expired pieces in crates. have an a-d, e-h,i-l, etc. also, why not keep the clients in a database or something and let them know 90 days are up, or better yet, their pieces are dry and they can come in to glaze? i just think this is the classic bad rap that happens with artists: great idea but executed poorly. as much as i enjoyed having a ball of clay on a wheel and making something, this arrangement leaves something to be desired. read more
