I got the lobster enchiladas and the sauce was delicious, but there was way too much cheese, so much so that it overpowered the lobster. Everyone else loved their food though. Okay this place was sooo amazing! From the moment we arrived, the service was top-notch and the staff made us feel so welcome. The margarita flight was absolutely bomb and every single dish came out perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I was a little disappointed at first because during brunch hours, they only offer brunch and nowhere in the website did it say that. We decided to stay and make the best out of it. We are glad we stayed as everything was delicious! The chef was even nice enough to make an exception and do the chile relleno which is part of the dinner menu. Everything was absolutely delicious! We were celebrating my bf birthday with my mom so they brought the dessert and sang for him. It comes with a flare and it's sugar, cinnamon chips that were super good with an ice-cream scoop. Alright everyone, what is the real deal here? I did not see anything but overprices Mexican Food. Frankly, I know I am a harsh critic of Mexican food because I grew up all around it and always open to different tastes and regional food. Our waitress and chef both mentioned that the food was their take on food from the state of Michoacan Mexico. OK, then.... Our group ate a the "plancha" table, which is where you watch the chef prepare your food, similar to teppan Japanese restaurants. Nothing special, you watch them prepare eggs, steak, melt cheese and grill veggies and heat tortillas. WOW! Really, not worth the premium, at least not in my book. No show, no anything special. The food in my opinion lacked what I consider true Mexican Flavor. The food was served at different intervals, in short, I was the first one served but by the time the last person at our table got served I was done and I have to add my food was not even very hot because by the time the chef finished layers everything on the huevos rancheros, everything was cold and the over easy eggs were cold and frankly the edges were over fried and burnt. Really, which chef fails and making over easy eggs? I frankly doubt our chef was really a certified chef and if they were, I would question the school they went to. The carnitas which is a staple in Michoacan were not all that, I have had better at taco stands, to me they were dry and had too much of a citrusy taste, which takes away from the meat or flavor of what carnitas should be. In talking to others in my group which ordered tacos, chilaquiles, carnitas machaca and even appetizers of choriqueso and guacamole, they were not impressed either. Over prices for what you get. I doubt their regular seats who work from a different menu is any better, but I am not willing to find out. Maybe the ingredients are fresh, but again once we tallied the bill the average price per person with one main dish 2 flights of margaritas and two appetizers for a group of 8 averaged almost $75 per person. Anthony Bourdain once called Mexican cuisine the most undervalued and underappreciated cuisines in the world and this is without a doubt true. Descanso is actually two, maybe three restaurants in one. There is a standard sit down restaurant, a taco bar, and the plancha dinner experience. As I have only experienced the plancha dinner, that is all I can speak to. Although the plancha grill dates back to 19th century Mexico and Central America, most people think of the Japanese teppanyaki experience that Benihana popularized in the US. Descanso brings the traditional plancha from outside and adds a teppanyaki flair. You will have to make separate reservations specifically for the plancha section of the restaurant. There is a different menu from the standard restaurant that includes a multi course menu that you are told at the start will be a two hour experience. The place looks great on the inside, with a full bar, a single plancha grill near the front that serves as the taco bar, and four more in the back that seat 8 people each. The standard restaurant also has a large outside seating area. The drinks from the bar are very good, with my favorite being the el jefe. Try it. Most drinks run from 15-17 bucks with specials during the week. The dinner starts with a server explaining what will happen and then takes your orders. I ordered the carne asada with the add on queso frito ( a must) and shrimp. My wife had the pork loin, and my friends had the sea bass and chile relleno. There is a ribeye option for 72 bucks and a rajas option as well. Prices start around 35 and top out at the ribeye. Everyone loved everything they ordered. Jose was our chef and like many Teppanyaki experiences he told jokes and made fire, but Jose talked about how the owner of Descanso started his restaurant and added some personal touches about his own family and love for cooking. You start with either a salad or a fideo (noodle) soup. Both are fine, but nothing to write home about. Your chef will then start with your fried rice before he gets to the main courses. The rice is also fine, but the food is excellent. The carne asada came on a bed of potatoes with sliced poblanos and onions. Others came with veggies and potatoes. I recommend getting it topped with queso frito if you like cheese because it just put it over the top. It is also served with two sauces and either flour or blue corn tortillas. I will definitely be back. If it were closer, I would try the specials during the week. I commend the owner or owners for what they are doing- bringing something different in areas not traditionally known for upscale Mexican cuisine. They have a location in Costa Mesa and West LA (next to LACMA). Go there for special occasions, or just go there. It's worth it. read more

We ate a plancha table. Our chef was wonderful She was engaging & the food she prepared was delicious. The service was another story. Initial drinks and appetizer delivery took almost 45 minutes. The cooking took a usual amount of time for a full table of 9. Once we were all served, the server began to rush us. Take-out containers (not asked for) & the bill were delivered while we were still eating. We were then asked to vacate the table or move to the bar as they had another reservation waiting. If they are only giving a 2 hour window per table reservation, then they need to move quicker on drinks, apps & entres to allow for adequate time to enjoy the almost $400 dinner. The food was great. The carne asada was SO RICH AND DELICIOUS. I absolutely love the cream colored sauce & he even gave me extra (so nice!). The meat was super tender and I loved the pickled onions. The salad and fried rice were also really nice and flavorful. I will say the fried rice the next day wasn't as good. Our chef was so funny and helpful. I wish he did speak up a little more but I loved his jokes that I could hear. He put on a great show and served some really amazing food. Parking is ample but it was super crowded when I came on a Monday night for some reason so I had to park in a compact spot. Not impossible but definitely a little stressful. April 5th 2026 special day --my 62nd birthday. I chose Descanso restaurant in Costa Mesa because I already experienced the one on Wilshire where I had a wonderful experience. I had a large party and in trying to accommodate everybody, Costa Mesa was closer for the majority of my group. When we arrived, there we were seated at bar table as stated by Delilah per telephone prior to birthday. Once we sat down, I noticed 2 things, 1. Chef did not greet visitors 2. Bar was not clean. The waiteress who was assigned to our table was very kind and accommodating. Food: the cook who act like he didnt speak English, was not friendly nor not talkative just there. we were supposed to have a little show expirence which de did not do or tell us he is now cooking our food. The chef rarely changed his gloves and never cleaned grill. One of my guest specifically asked if the grill can be cleaned because she can't have pork and beef contamination for she will get sick. Because grill was not cleaned or gloves changed, she canceled her order. It's my birthday I'm not going to let anything upset me so I requested a new chef and Chef Tanya came to the rescue! Chef Tanya was plesant, greeted us, socialable and gave a little show especially during the singing of "happy Birthday". A awesome job. I noticed that the waiter asked if we had dined there before, then our food was terrible, which makes me wonder if they reserve the best meat for first-timers to get you to come back because the first time I had the same food and it was beyond amazing! Also, it was my birthday and the reservation asked about special occasions and I added my birthday--nothing was done for me at all. What was the point of asking? I ordered the Hanger Steak medium rare and it was basically raw and CHEWY and VERY spicey. As I said, I ordered this before and it was amazing as were the sides, just a pinch of spice and delicious. It was my first visit, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect -- but wow, everything was incredible! The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared right in front of us. His energy and personality added so much to the experience -- he was definitely the highlight of our night! We ordered guac and chips and for myself I got the El Dorado, which is 2 mahi mahi tacos with chamoy, mexislaw, chile peanuts, chile morita aioli and cilantro on a blue corn tortilla. But let me tell you from the beginning their host was very unprofessional if I am not mistaken her name was Karen that's what her supervisor Sandy told me . We were able to catch the last 20min or so of happy hour so we were excited! I've been a few times and have ordered different items and it's always 10/10! I would have preferred warmer food. I will return to try the hibachi table so I can get the experience and hot food and fresh food. We settled on Descanso for Easter Brunch for a party of 10. We had a reservation; however, we had to wait for about 45 minutes before being seated. Once we were seated, we were ready to eat! We ordered our dishes; it did take quite a while for the food, but we made the most of it by conversing with family and staying positive. The hostess and waitress were both very friendly and helpful in suggestions. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: We started with chips and salsa along with some guacamole. We also got some nachos. The chips and salsa were great and so were the nachos. We were 10 people so we had to share the salsa bowl so I asked for more salsa. They brought us 3 more salsas which was great. However, when we got the bill, we saw that there was a charge of $2 for each additional salsa bowl? Ok.... But I thought we already paid for the chips and salsa? Huevos Rancheros, chilaquiles, salmon avocados tostados, Plato de quesadilla, Mayan tacos (chicken), volcano tacos (surf and turf). Huevos Rancheros were so so, nothing to write home about. The chilaquiles were also pretty lacking in flavor even though we paid an up charge for a special cheese blend. Salmon avocados tostados was some kind of confit and it was served cold (as we were told), but we didn't expect it to be half frozen! The Mayan tacos were hardly edible, the chicken was very sour. The volcano tacos were actually pretty good but we had asked for the habanero sauce and the jalapeños on the side; they got it right with the jalapeños on the side but the habanero sauce was in the tacos. Though the food was disappointing, the staff were nice. It was Easter Sunday and they were probably stretched thin so we had to wait for a while to be seated and wait for quite a while for our food. But they did make an effort and that counts for something. That is why I'm giving a 2 star rating rather than just one star. read more

I enjoyed my time over there, they have good ambience, live music and our chef made sure we are engaged through out the cooking process.
