Mi Pueblito Bar & Grill - Chile Verde Lunch Special

Mi Pueblito Bar & Grill

Came here hungry. Left full, mildly confused, and extremely satisfied…read more We kicked things off with chips and salsa. The chips? A+--crunchy, fresh, and clearly made by someone who respects the tortilla. The salsa? Let's just say it had strong marinara energy. I half-expected someone to offer me breadsticks. The queso was fine. Not mad at it, not writing poetry about it either. Then came the entrees: chile verde and a chicken chimichanga. Both were fantastic--crispy, golden, and toasted like they'd just come back from vacation in Cabo. Massive portions. Like, "should've brought Tupperware" big. The kind of meal that stares back at you and dares you to finish it. Washed it all down with a cold Dos Equis. No complaints there--beer was as it should be: cold, reliable, and didn't try to taste like mango or birthday cake or anything weird. Our waiter Jason deserves a shoutout--attentive, friendly, and we had a nice conversation about their EXCELLENT in house hot sauce. The decor? A wild ride. Red, white, and blue everywhere--I assume in honor of July 4th, but it kind of felt like Uncle Sam opened a cantina. A little confusing for the senses, but hey, festive is festive. All in all, great food, great service, and a patriotic fever dream of a dining room. Would definitely come back--maybe with a mariachi band and a bald eagle next time.

Taqueria Becerra - Taco Chicharrones Rojo

Taqueria Becerras is a hidden gem in Versailles, KY, about a 15-minute drive from the castle and…read moreabsolutely worth every minute. I've been coming here for 10+ years for their handmade tortillas and fresh barbacoa tacos. They also have a killer creamy green sauce that ties everything together perfectly. I always try to switch up the protein but I can't. I like what I like, and the barbacoa is the reason I keep coming back. They offer plenty of other authentic Mexican plates as well, so there's something for everyone. The owners are incredibly sweet, and the inside feels just like a small, cozy Mexican taqueria simple, welcoming, and full of heart. One thing to note: they now have a weird closing time before dinner, so plan accordingly if you're making the trip.

I came in as "new in the area," and over the years the atmosphere has shifted into something rarer: it feels like you've been folded into the orbit of a family business that genuinely cares whether you leave happy. The food is consistently fresh and made with the kind of attention that's hard to fake. The classics hit every time--tacos on simple corn tortillas with cilantro and onion, a menu that goes well beyond the basics, and all the little details that make it taste like someone's cooking for people they know. But here's the real reason I tell people to go: the birria de chiva. If you're having one of those days where everything feels heavy, go sit down, order the soup, and let it do its work. It's rich, comforting, and somehow resets your whole mood in the first few bites. I've tried a lot of "comfort food" in my life--this is the real thing. Addendum: the recent patio addition and the bar are wonderful.
