My old dentist went missing and we ended up finding Des Peres Dentistry. I was impressed at my first visit the way that the hygienist explained what was going on and how they worked my insurance to try to get the most benefit for me. Second visit, I had a couple crowns to replace old metal fillings and it was pain free. *Disclaimer: My family business was a dental lab that I worked in - this cannot simply be written off as sour grapes - what I am about to tell you... Admittedly, I had put off finding a new dentist for several years after my former dentist swindled me (at the time a single mother) out of money knowing I would pay full price somewhere else, installed my crowns improperly, claimed I needed gum surgery (I didn't - the crown was not molded to scale) and then tried to charge me out of pocket claiming she was not responsible for damaged crowns (it was due to improper installation of said crown and blood being trapped below the tooth at the time of seating)... She refused to allow me to choose the shade of my crowns and told me she wasn't going to give me whiter uppers unless I paid $600 for a full whitening treatment on the lowers. (Its my mouth - my choice...). Why didn't I walk away, you ask? I called around for pricing on crowns and certain procedures and her prices were "best" with my insurance. I should have walked away... I did not want to deal with this crap again after such a horrible experience. I did not trust that I was not going to be royally screwed again. I had actually made appointments with other dental offices and canceled before the date. (TLDR; cautionary tale about making sure you choose a dentist who is not going to swindle you and blame you for their mistakes.). I started having trouble with one of my crowns, that the former dentist installed, and the pain woke me up in the middle of the night. I reached out on a community forum about a place that did same-day crowns while you wait, versus weeks of waiting and a dentist they loved. I landed on this office among the TONS of recommendations solely because it is right next to my office and would be really convenient for me and well... I was in a lot of pain. Not exactly how I wanted to meet a new dentist! Dr. Gaffney's office had a cancellation for same-day and I was floored. Thank goodness! They got me in immediately, checked all of my insurance beforehand, had a portion of the documents filled out for me when I arrived... and offered me Cabernet. Um. Wow. I mean I was pretty much in love at that point... The office is incredibly clean, well-designed, very pleasant, and 'soothing'. There are TV screens on all the chairs, and the team offered me a hot neck wrap to help relax me. They immediately got into diagnosing my problem - as she was doing X-rays, Dr. Gaffney was in an adjacent room diagnosing the problem. Upon meeting Dr. Gaffney he immediately got down to business, introductions still happened but he knew from my X-ray I needed answers ASAP. He was very polite and calming and I appreciated his bedside manners. I do not get anxious about needles or anything like that, but having never experienced a root canal (which in my heart of hearts I knew that I needed) I was a bit worried not knowing what to expect. He did not refer me to an endo, he did not put me off until another day, he did the root canal *pronto*. I was so grateful for this as I was in a LOT of pain. As far as root canals go - it was honestly not terribly unpleasant once we got the sweet spot of numbness. I don't feel like it was anything dramatically different than a simple filling and it was roughly 20 minutes! I had antibiotics and something for pain and within 12 hours I was feeling dramatically better - two days later and I am about 100%! He looked at all of my other crowns, diagnosed the issues with the crowns, and helped develop a plan of action. The awesome ladies at the front desk had already reviewed my insurance and plotted everything out for me, gave me a couple options and went out of their way to help maximize my insurance benefits for the end of the year (as this is October). I am confident that when I have Dr. Gaffney replace my improperly installed crowns that they will be correctly and that I will be treated with dignity and full-on transparency. I think Dr. Gaffney and his staff are going to be a great choice as my new dentist. read more

DO NOT go here. My partner has had nothing but problems with this place. All the work breaks, crowns and bad fitting implants. My partner has spent a lot of hard earned money in hopes of having good dental care. The work breaks, Jeff Gaffney and staff, get you in a loop of having to come back, then charge you more, it is so sad what they do to people. I want to write more but my partner has to go back for work that is paid for and is worried about the the care he\she will receive if they know he/she is filing a complaint. A rock in a hard place situation. They also have kept money for over payment and have not reimbursed my partner. They say he/she will have to pay for the re do of shotty dentistry. Alright, went to this place because of a Groupon for a teeth whitening session. WoW! I was impressed with the place and staff even before I got into the door. I had made my appointment, and 7 hours before I was supposed to be in I had something come up and needed to reschedule. I was going to be heading out of town the coming Sunday and really wanted to get my teeth looking pearly white before I left. The Receptionist was sweet enough to bump her own daughter's appointment back so I could squeeze in! Amazing!!! Once I got there I was even more impressed! The office is a bit smaller and more intimate, and each dentist chair has it own television and headset, so I just laid back as the wonderful hygienist cleaned up my smile. I was so please with all of them I will be calling later today to make an appointment for their Teeth Straightening Options since my Orthodontist retired last year. I am pulling my family out of this practice. You trust people who make good judgements as a care giver. I understand your position of seeing only existing patients and those that are in pain. But your refusal to see my son who is recovering from strep throat and tonsillitis and now has a severe gum infection show poor judgement. Especially based upon a policy of you are doing no deep gum cleanings. Again I support that as part of regularly scheduled routine maintenance. I originally went to Des Peres Dentistry because I had a Groupon for a cleaning and teeth whitening. After the first initial appointment, I know I will never go anywhere else. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable and I have never waited for more than five minutes for my appointment. The staff is beyond polite and remembers you each time you walk in. We carry on conversations from previous appointments and they remember details from the last time we spoke. I absolutely cannot say enough great things about the hygienists, but Dr. Short is just as amazing! I was initially impressed with all the awards and articles Dr. Short received in local and larger magazines, but these are all very well-deserved. He takes my concerns seriously and does everything possible to make me feel comfortable. One appointment, I had a cavity and am very afraid of needles. Dr. Short was actually able to forgo the anesthetic per my request and filled my cavity without any numbing agents and I still did not feel a thing. I would not recommend if you don't like to be blind-sided. I was told my procedure would be $631.00 out of pocket. I asked them twice if they were sure on that amount. A couple of weeks later I received a bill for an additional $252.20. When I called a question I was told they gave me an estimate and there was nothing they can do. In addition I am in their network. $20 or $30 I get but to be off $252 is not acceptable. Needless to say I will be searching for a new dentist. read more

Not a fan of the new owner of this practice. We are on our 5th attempt to correct the same issue. The staff is nice, the cleanings are fine but don't get any repairs done on your teeth. The repairs are poor, break off easily & the tech is really rough on your mouth. Not one repair has lasted. We will be taking our business someplace else. read more

I have worked previously in the dental field and this office is very unprofessional. Saved up my money for my dream smile. I Had $12,500 worth of cosmetic dentistry done (8 porcelain veneers) and within 2 months I noticed major issues. 5 of the veneers broke and cracked within the first year which should never happen with porcelain. One by one, I had to pay out of pocket for them to be replaced. Major issues with matching the colors, shape, and integrity of the veneers. They don't look cohesive or like they even match. It makes me sad because my goal was I just wanted to smile confidently and now I feel embarrassed and ashamed I spent all that money for nothing. It was a huge mistake trusting this office. The communication with staff and doctor was awful. I did all the right things and everything in my power to work with them to correct the situation. Even purchased a 400$ night guard that they said would help. I gave the office many chances to try and correct their mistakes but unfortunately they proved to be incompetent. I have since gotten second and third opinions and according to 3 other dentists, they were prepped improperly and impinge on the biological width. I've never written a review, and I hate to write a bad review on any business but I feel compelled and don't want anyone else to waste their money and time. read more

Dr. Gaffney messed up my my crown so badly that I was in excruciating pain for over 2 months. It was fit improperly which caused me to have a bite that caused trauma and nerve damage. This trauma not only resulted in having to have the crown replaced, but now today I am going in for a root canal. I have been dealing with this same tooth since December of last year because the work was not done correctly. This has been an extremely costly issue that has caused me lots of pain and time since last December. I gave the Dr. an opportunity to make it right and he was not interested. To top it off they have lost all of my records and x-rays. They are also extremely difficult to get into. Dr. Short and his staff are great! I was very lucky to have found this office when I had chipped teeth. My regular dentist told me I'd have to wait untl my teeth broke and then get a crown. After having braces and taking wonderful care my whole life, this was not an acceptable solution! Dr. Short and his staff and I exchanged emails before I made over a two hour drive to get into see him. Dr. Short is effortless with his skill! He reinforced and shaped my teeth with bonding and they look better than ever! They are beautiful! They almost look like veneers! His staff made sure my insurance would work with the treatment plan and turned a stressful situation into a great improvement in my smile! I highly recommend this office! I went to Des Peres Dentistry for a second opinion. My previous dentist, of several years, suddenly mentioned that I had 7 cavities. Feeling doubtful in their prognosis, I went to visit Dr . Short. After my thorough cleaning, I was told that I was cavity free! Of course, Des Peres Dentistry is now my current provider...I prefer to do business with honest individuals that are focused on service versus just a transaction. I started coming to this Dentist 2 yrs ago from a groupon I bought because I didn't have dental insurance, I'm so glad I did, not that my old dentist was bad but Natalie and Amanda are great and the dentist is so much more with the times than my old one. They put a neckwarmer on you and turn on a tv that swings out over you while your getting worked on as well, I've since had 2 crowns done and it was completely painless for both and the teeth whitening is very affordable. Well, I found this dentist from an article in one of the local magazines 2 years ago. I lived in Kirkwood at the time and it was super close to my house. It is July of 2014 and needless to say I am still a patient. The office is very clean and professional and easy to find. Parking is ample. The staff is very welcoming. I just needed professional cleanings, but Dr. Short was able to also help with with one of the buttons that popped off dealing with my invisiline. (not so great experience at previous orthadontist) Dr. Short was happy to help. My appointments are always on time and I am in/out with ease and a goody bag to go! I had received a card in the mail offering a cleaning, x-rays and a consultation for $75, it was close to my house, and I was needing to see a dentist. I decided to take a chance that this would be a good dentist for me, because I did not have dental insurance. The outer office is small, but exceptionally clean and comfortable. Everyone in the office was very nice and helpful. Lauren, was my hygienist, and part of her greeting was to place a warmed pillow around my neck. It really felt good and helped me to relax. I told her that the water and air were cold for my sensitive teeth so she used an alternative method to dry my teeth and she put the water on my tongue to warm it before rinsing my mouth. I had never had this method suggested before, but it worked and it did not hurt my teeth. It was a great experience. I have not been in very many dental offices, but their equipment for x-raying was amazing. They were able to show me each tooth on the computer screen, so that I could see what was going on with my teeth. The unfortunate part was that I could see that I was going to need some serious dental work. Dr Short explained the x-rays and what work needed to be done. We then discussed what needed the most attention first and what the process would be. I have had 2 crowns put in and will probably need a few more. Dr Short and his staff did an excellent job of making me feel comfortable during the crown process. Dr Short's office also has options to help make paying for your dental care a little less painful also. I do not have dental insurance but they had an option that would fit my budget. i hope that you will have as good an experience as I have had with Dr Short and his staff. read more

Several Months ago I has walked into Des Peres Dental in hopes to get some work done on a few cavities I had. After the examination, The next required steps were discussed which involved using a tiny plastic cone shaped objected to be shoved in my tooth and covered with filling, since my cavities were so deep and close to a root canal. After the procedure was completed, Justin told me for the next month my teeth could be a little sore. Well, He was right but it did not last just a month. It never stopped hurting and this past week the pain has been so bad I can not even sleep sometimes.    All the 5 star reviews may make this place seem like heaven or too good to be true and it is just that. Justin only has all 5 star reviews because he pays people 50$ visa gift cards to leave them. Also, he wrote a BAD CHECK for my boyfriend when he had done some work for Justin on some home he owns. First off I have to say, even though I do look at review sites, I have never written my own review...of anything. I am trying to turn over a new leaf. Since I used a couple review sites to find this office(beyond a friend's referral), I thought I would give my own. I was a little nervous, becuase they did ask for my CC# to reserve my time. They said as long as I gave 24 hours notice for cancelling or rescheduling nothing would ever be charged...if I didn't show up there would be $40 charge. Like anyone I hate to give my CC info, but I did it, and all was fine. Although nothing special to look at from the outside, the inside was done very nice, clean, updated, and modern. I did have about a 5 minute wait beyond my appointment time, I can handle that. They seemed busy, and Amanda who cleaned my teeth, did apologize for my wait. Not needed, but appreciated. My cleaning was really good, seemed very thourough, and they did have camera that could take pictures of my teeth, which I thought was cool. Maybe a lot of offices have these, my old office didnt so it was new to me. After Amanda was finished, Dr. Short came in. He was very nice, seemed very down to earth, not pushy. I have not had any 'work' done at the office yet, but I can say I am happy I took a leap of faith and tried a new office after going to the same one for many years. I decided to try Des Peres Dentistry because of a free consultation regarding implants and the fact that I had read about Dr Short being recognized as an expert in cosmetic dentistry. I am glad I did. I have required significant dental work over the years and, as a result, became way too familiar with dental offices, how they work and the roles of staff members. I am amazed at the way in which Des Peres Dentistry seems to run like a finely tuned engine. The staff are all friendly, very pleasant and very efficiently hard working. They seem to truly enjoy their work and their concern for my dental health is sincere. Moreover, it is clear that they likely are that way because of their leader, Dr Justin Short. Dr Short has been a unique dentist in my experience. He has made himself available as a true consultant relative to the various options to me. He and I even entered in to ongoing email dialogues as we discussed my care. For a while, we even corresponded daily while he was on vacation with his family.
