My first appointment with Des Peres Smiles was phenomenal. I have driven by this office coming home from work and didn't think much of it, but it's actually a great office and very close to my house. The staff were great -- from the receptionist Shannon to the tech Allison and finally, the dentist Dr. Nicole Niewdach. She was knowledgeable and kind, and she along with Allison were very gentle while operating on me. I felt like I was in great hands. The office was very clean as well. They were able to put temporaries in while her permanents were expedited at the lab. They allowed a few days to 'adjust' the permanent crowns if they weren't perfect the first time. Needless to say, those extra days were not used for further adjustments. My wife's front crowns turned out impeccable! We could not believe how good they looked. We headed out to get married after both of us received some major work to improve our teeth. My mom continues to see Dr. Woodruff. Words I'd use to describe them: nice and gentle. Good qualities for a dentist, right? What you need to know: They work with integrity - they are not going to recommend unnecessary work in order to make themselves money. They might not have the newest and shiniest office, but I also don't want my dental work financing those things! They are conservative in their treatment and that matters most to me. As someone who has spent large periods of my life without dental insurance and doesn't love having my teeth drilled on, I value a practice that doesn't suggest I get unnecessary work done. They often give me the "I'm going to keep an eye on this" instead of going straight to drilling and filling. In the past, I went to another dentist on a whim - most likely because they offered a new patient deal - and walked away with a long list of work they wanted to do. When I went back to Baxter Dental, they said, "Yeah, I don't see all these problems." That says it all...and is the reason why you should see one of the Drs. W.

There are iPads in the waiting area for the kids to play on and the dental chairs all have TVs on the ceiling to help keep patients distracted during the cleanings/procedures! They were absolutely wonderful with my 4yo and 2yo (first time for the latter). The staff were welcoming and made my kiddos feel at ease. Both walked out with smiles on their faces. Dr. Salthouse took the time to talk with us and gave us wonderful tips for our kids. We even learned some new things for our own hygiene. I recommend them over other nearby locations. There was a soothing Yankee candle ablaze at the front desk and opera music pumping softly from the speakers. In this environment, I had to remind myself that I wasn't waiting for my masseuse to come out; I was waiting for my dentist. Entering the back of the house, I felt like I was in an episode of the 2010 television series, V. Each dentist chair was set in its own pod-like room, complete with a flat-screen LCD TV overhead and massage settings in the chair. My hygienist graciously asked what channel I wanted to watch while I had my teeth cleaned and wanted to know if she should activate the massage feature on the chair. . .well, hells yes! Dr. Mathew performed the ultrasonic teeth cleaning, a method with which I was previously unfamiliar, but for which I am now a total fan! She was extremely informative and educational in her approach to my dental health, all while being very sensitive to my comfort level. My dental hygienist was very friendly and personable, and really seemed to make my comfort her top priority. It's no wonder this place has been featured on St. Louis Magazine's Top Dentists list for two years running. They have transformed what once was a hellish experience for me with my former dentist in to a thoroughly enjoyable experience that I will no longer fear. This office performed root canals and crowns, gladly accepting over $30,000 out of pocket. Only later did I learn that medical insurance would have covered these costs. This office does not bill medical insurance--but they also failed to disclose that fact or mention that my injuries might qualify for medical coverage. Had I known, I would have sought treatment elsewhere. I find this lack of transparency unethical, and it's hard to believe they weren't aware of it. To make matters worse, just five years later, several of the root canals are failing due to missed channels, causing infection and risking tooth loss. My advice: Save yourself the cost and heartache. See a specialist. And if your dental problems are injury-related, contact your medical insurance first--and avoid this office.
