I really tried to like this school because I thought my son was happy only to find out that he had been unhappy for the past few years and comments about his skin tone were continuously made.. very disappointing for being a private school.. Students openly admit to gossiping with staff, and the culture among faculty is equally toxic--judgmental, unprofessional, and in some cases, outright inappropriate. One new teacher was even caught vaping marijuana during school hours. The administration turns a blind eye to serious concerns in favor of maintaining a false image of perfection. They refuse to address problematic behavior unless pressured to do so. Their so-called "Upstander Pledge' is meaningless--a performance that doesn't reflect the school's actual values. While they're obsessed with monitoring students on cameras, they ignore the root issues until forced to act. It is a shame because it started off as a great school environment, but over the years I feel as though it is no longer a safe or healthy environment for students as it once was. I can say all this based on personal experience and my personal opinion.

My son is academically gifted but has severe anxiety and low frustration tolerance. He is also a loyal friend, lots of fun and loves learning - but he can get frustrated in the classroom. The school offers zero emotional support. And please don't be fooled by their no-bullying slogan. My son was brutally bullied by some real nasty boys while several teachers stood by and watched. We found out from the man who drove him to school. My son was too sweet to know he was being picked on. When we brought it to the attention of the principle TWICE (and her side kick), they did nothing. I assume the other boy's parents had more money because it's all about the bottom line for this corporate owned school. The academics are strong But buyer beware and please protect your kids. Set on manicured grounds in the shadow of Storm King Mountain and just down the road from West Point, SKS is an educational community with an impressive 150 year history (see: https://sks.org). My nephew teaches here. He lives here, with his charges and family. He is an extraordinary educator and reflects the sensibilities of this place. His colleagues are just like him. SKS is exclusive in the sense of expense and rigor (hence not for everyone) but it is not your stereotypical UK snobatorium -- flush with secret handshakes and trust fund teens. It is elite, sure -- but in a good way -- like Yelp; with a Bohemian vibe. Were I in the market for a prep school that boards their students, SKS would be high on my list.

Based on her first half of the year, it has been the best investment that we could have made. Academics: Coming from public schools in New York City, we have been very pleased that the teachers have high expectations for our daughter and also offer her support and time after class to cover material that she found challenging. In addition to helping her learn the content of each class, she has received support from the Learning Center that has enabled to her to begin to develop the independence and study habits that she will need to be successful in college. Moreover, the teachers have demonstrated a true passion for pedagogy. We have been particularly impressed with her English teacher, and the way that he guides his students to engage with literature and traditional essay writing, while also developing his students' creativity and critical thinking. We also really like that she has the opportunity to take Mandarin Chinese - this is indicative of the breadth of course offerings at Storm King. Extra-curricular activities: From an extra-curricular perspective, SKS has created the environment where students are able to take risks and encourages them to find areas outside of academics that they are passionate about. While previously she did not demonstrate a passion for sports, she has already played on two sports teams in her first half of the year. She particularly enjoyed the experience on the soccer team and built great camaraderie with her teammates. Also, she has participated in the dance program, which is quite extraordinary. The recent dance recital gave the students in the dance program the opportunity to showcase all that they had been working on to the entire school community. Boarding environment and peers: As you might imagine, we were very apprehensive to send our 9th grade daughter to boarding school. However, the SKS boarding experience has exceeded our expectations. First of all, The dean, house parents and other faculty are well attuned to what is happening with the students - which puts us at ease as parents. We also really like that our daughter has the opportunity to interact with such a diverse group of students from all around the world. As a byproduct of being in this environment, she has become more intellectually curious about the world outside of NYC and the United States. She also has developed a close group of friends that have ambitious plans for their future. In summary, the individualized attention, the deep commitment to excellence and the nurturing environment of SKS makes it an ideal place for our daughter to attend high school.

We are so happy that we have this school so close by. We know many families that travel very far to come to this school. My daughters who now attend Lakeland Regional High School are very happy to have gone through elementary and middle school at this small tight knit school. We do not have an large extended family, so it is really just us but we feel like we have an extended family at RCS. Pros: They received a very grounded education there. They are well equipped in high school for studying and writing reports. They gained organizational and analytical thinking skills which will serve them for the rest of their lives, along with the foundation in the Bible and a godly worldview. The teachers are good mentors. It can be a close knit experience. Cons: going into the regional high school, they did not know anyone. It's been ok for my one daughter who continued with her instrument. She went into band at Lakeland and has a good connection with that. Otherwise, they can feel a little out of place. Most kids know eachother from the local middle schools. However, I have heard from many sources that the local middle schools are not really a good place. Especially if you do not want your kids programmed by culture. RCS can sometimes feel a bit stifling for some. The very small class sizes do not leave a lot of room for making different friends. Once class pecking order is established, some kids can feel left out. The teachers try to watch out for this but it's a hard thing to stop. I've also heard that New York requires certain testing in middle school which then places a student in high school. If your child attends school in New York, you might want to consider placing them in the public middle school for this reason. As far as elementary school is concerned, I think it's wonderful all around.

Only 300 out of 1500 US colleges have the sigma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Queens has this. My family members and tons of my coworkers have attended (as have Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Simon). They have a great job placement program and excellent housing.

Principal Eagleburger is doing a great job since coming to FTS a few years ago. Overall, the only bad thing about FTS is that our kids will be leaving one day. At least we'll be confident that they got a solid foundation for the rest of their academic careers.
