This is a store that specializes in European imports and specialty foods. Good thing I don't live here or I'd be as big as a house. Was going to get a sandwich or a sausage, but remembered that we were having sandwiches for dinner later. They have a cafeteria bar as well as the ability to order food. I ordered two cabbage rolls, mac and cheese, and veggies for one meal. Roasted pork with sautéed onions and scalloped potatoes for the other. We were sharing among 3 of us. The cabbage rolls were perfect. To me, tasted like someone's Polish or Russian mamma made them. So good. The veggies were al dente, good mix. The mac and cheese had a rich flavor and was nice and cheesy. The roasted pork tasted like Sunday afternoon dinner. Omg- so good! The scalloped potatoes were the best I've ever eaten in my life. My wife agreed. Amazing. This is a gem here in Hamilton. For those readers in Portland- think of a bigger version of Edelweiss or Otto's Sausages, with a bigger menu and a hot food bar with amazing food! Excellent job! This used to be a Hamilton icon. I went into one of their stores after seeing knockout prices, highlighted with red stars for some of their cheeses. Lots of cheese,but at regular prices. The specials were not to be found. Staff was helpful, but the excuses ran shallow. I called head office, which is at the Hamilton downtown office, and all of the managers take the weekends off! I expect stores to get in their advertised prices, not to take their customers for granted. Not worth the gas money to try again, being hopeful. Denningers put Hamilton on the food map since I was a kid, which is a long, long time ago. Now it's half empty on a Saturday close to Christmas, trying to become the Zellers of the food world. read more

Went there around 12.30 today. Waited in a long line up to order food. Two other couples ordered food after me. They got their food and left while l was still waiting. I got a corned beef on rye l wasn't asked what if anything l wanted on it. They put cheese and saurkraut on it without asking me. Also my husband had a German hamburger which was not cooked properly still very pink. Totally disgusted. What a waste of 35.oo for lunch. Service sooooo slow. read more

I'm now sitting in the bistro at upper James, and I can't say enough good things about the food the service and the feeling I get when you can stand in a line waiting for your meal and witness the extreme kindness of a group of coworkers that seem to be more like a loving family. It was a great experience and one I will share with all I know, Tami makes the very best western sandwich I have ever eaten. Please be sure to thank them again on my behalf. This place has many great items for sale, from all over the world. The different meats, especially the kielbasa's they have, are delicious, the bagels and pretzels are fantastic, the frozen food section has many options, and the dairy section has many world items along with the local items such as Hewitts Dairy (including their ice cream). The restaurant is convenient and has some very tasty goulash and schnitzels. There is lots of convenient seating and the staff are very friendly. However, all of this uniqueness in stock comes at a premium price. Some general items, like the French bread, aren't worth it, as you can get them much cheaper elsewhere, so choose wisely. read more

I just hosted a surprise retirement party and went to Upper James location to order platters. I dealt with Monica who was absolutely amazing in helping me plan for the number of people. When I went back to pick up food it was perfect and once again Monica was there to help. She helped me to put the boxes in the car and was just so pleasant and helpful. Awesome gourmet deli! They have a vast variety of breads, meats and cheeses - a lot of European gourmet items you can't find at your typical Metro or Freshco. The prices are hit and miss, it tends to be a bit more expensive than other reveries store, but the quality of food is fresh and fantastic! P.S. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the cheese section here! read more

I always make sure to get a Big Rudi for lunch on a nice fresh onion bun. There's a ton of other good options like any of the sausages or the goulash but Big Rudi is the key. Homefries with gravy is pretty tasty too but a bit too much food for me with the Big Rudi on my plate. read more

Many thanks to George and his staff at the meat and deli counter for the great care and attention to detail that they provide every time we go. This speialalty grocery store is a fun treat. Tough not to impulse buy your way to $100 of imported eats. The cafeteria area has heat lamp quality, but still good, schnitzel, cabage rolls and other authentic German fare that are a decent alternative to fast food lunch. read more

The grocery part of the store is also excellent, with a wide variety of hard to find pickled goods, meats, breads, cheeses and sauces. Always a favorite!! read more

Really good deli. The sausage and baked good were delicious. Their system: cafeteria style restaurant and samples everywhere are excellent selling tools. Love this place; give it a try. We parked in their lot and paid. When the attendant noticed that we came into the restaurant, he got out of his booth and came into the restaurant to give us back $1.50. We were so amazed by his honesty. Hamilton was a great experience because of Denninger's and its staff. read more
