I call this the baby loopty loop ride at Great America. It's an oldie but goodie. A classic. I haven't ridden this ride in 10 years and forgot how exciting it still was with its loops and corkscrew turns. It's a great coasters for kids, as they let you on just as long as you are 4 feet tall. Great ride to ride at night as the cave you go through seems more eerie, with the eyes of the demon all lit up red. The seating on this are 2 riders per car, and you have the harness to secure you as you flip upside down and turn side to side.

DÆMONS & GARGÖYLES What's the best way to spice up an aging Arrow looper? Add some mothafluffin' virtual reality. For the late 2016 season, Great America decided to include Samsung Gear (powered by Oculus) as part of an optional ride experience on the Demon, transforming it into "Rage of the Gargoyles". This is a fully immersive and 100% interactive deal, wherein you get the opportunity to shoot at various creatures over the course of the ride. Although this option has been around since mid-August, it's ideally suited for Fright Fest, the park's Halloween event. This is because the VR experience is......damn scary, if I'm being honest. More on that later. Virtual reality headsets have become all the "Rage" (if you'll excuse the coaster pun) this year, with at least a dozen being used on rides at various Six Flags parks around the country. Some on hyper coasters, others on launched attractions, but the choice of using them on Demon was an interesting concept. Aside from the incredibly fun VR experience, the rest of the coaster is still the same, although you'd never notice with the headset strapped to your noggin. There's a 104ft lift with a modest 90ft drop into consecutive vertical loops, followed by a tunnel (normally lit with incandescent bulbs) and a block brake section. A 180° turnaround leads into the back to back corkscrew elements and after a quick upward helix, the train hits the final brakes. .......but with Oculus covering your eyes, you can't mentally prepare your brain -- or physically prepare your body -- for the intense jarring sensation you'll undergo. This can result in an even rougher ride than usual, and if the Oculus goggles aren't completely fastened to your cranium, they'll bounce around on your forehead and bruise parts of your face. Comfort aside, the actual virtual reality is INCREDIBLE. Absolutely. F*cking. Awesome. Seriously one of the coolest things around, thanks to the theme of attacking gargoyles as a ride enhancement. You have 360° viewing ability (pitch, yaw, roll) as you're placed inside the cockpit of a helicopter during a siege on a major city. Your targeting reticule [a.k.a. crosshairs] automatically fires at the demonic flying creatures and gives you arbitrary points as the winged beasts explode in a rather bloody fashion. I won't give too much away, but at one point a gargantuan 'king' gargoyle appears as several hundred feet tall and looks majorly badass/terrifying. Graphics wise, I'd say resolution quality is somewhere between a PS3 and PS4, which is to say pretty darn good. WARNING I : the utilization of virtual reality helmets nearly triples the wait times. During my visit on 09/24/16, we waited 1.5 hours to experience Rage of the Gargoyles which is three times as long as one would otherwise wait for Demon. Keep this in mind when planning your day. WARNING II : this system is not without its flaws. VR headsets will occasionally not work and with the time limits imposed by the ride crews, not everyone may get a chance to experience it. Several people per train appeared to get jipped, so I'd recommend sitting towards the front as you'll have the most time to adjust before dispatch. WARNING III : only guests 13 and older will get to use the on-ride Oculus for liability reasons. Also probably a good idea, because the virtual monsters are more than slightly horrifying if I'm being perfectly honest 0_o But for those willing to wait the extra time, you will benefit from a highly unique ride experience. If this sounds like something that's up your alley, I'd recommend you get your ass out to Gurnee, go challenge the gargoyles..... .......and face your inner Demon.

Old metal clunker of love! First, is this the best coaster at the park? ...of course not. However, to me it holds my heart the same as the American Eagle Wooden Coaster that has been here forever too. It has the old uncomfortable harness style system for today's updated harness styles... But this is how I grew up - how most people here on yelp grew up. I hated the Shock Wave being removed (same harness and car style - but the superman is fantastic in place). Simple facts: Less height needed so little ones can ride this sooner than others. It used to be a top coaster here actually! Now it's a dinosaur without much line. Good starter for my generation. Perhaps for the little ones today or not since new is much smoother! Overall you ride up a rickety chain lift. Then, down through two loops (I always feel we might get stuck upside down second loop with decreased speed. I hear this happens!) next, two corkscrew loops. That's the coaster! There are rock tunnels you go through and one has a demon face carved into it. The tunnels have lights that worked before, now they don't, do, or only at night! It's a surprise! I hope they keep this. I love it. It beats me up comparatively over the innovative coaster years and studies of cool g-forces and heights of coasters that are new and technologically advanced. Sometimes old is as good as new! Like friends... "Make new friends but keep the old. One is treasure and the other is gold!" This sounds funny, but the Demon Roller Coaster is MY FRIEND! Being wedged between Raging Bull and x-flight I can't imagine digging my first love out being easy! It's rough for metal. Compare with the old not the new. But it's simple inversions and totally fun! Keep your eyes open for the demon rock! Cheers!

3X THE FUN Triple…read morePlay is located in Hometown Square in between the train station and the season pass processing center. The ride opened in 1976 and was manufactured by HUSS Rides. It is also known as a Trokia, which means 'group of three' in Russian. The Triple Play has three arms extending out from a center column. Each of these cars can seat up to two people and are located at the end of every arm in a circle. Now the fun begins when the operator turns on the ride. The center column rotates in a clockwise motion while the cars located at the end of the arms rotate in a counterclockwise motion. I am getting dizzy just thinking about this ride and let's not forget the sweeping motion of the ride as it goes up and down. You will also notice a slight rocking motion of the car from side to side. Now my description sounds a lot worse then the ride actually is. In fact, this ride is quite mild. It is a great beginner ride for your little one as you slowly work your kids up to bigger and faster coasters. This is another one of those rides that I have ridden on as a child and with my child. It is always fun to share these childhood memories. The line may look long but it moves fast. If I do my math correctly 21 cars times 2 people means 42 people can potentially ride at one time. I also feel that many people miss this ride because it is tucked in the corner. Make sure to do not wait until the end of the night to ride this because it will shut down early to accommodate the evening stage show and the nightly parade. You have been warned. My little one loves this ride and it is always fun to ride with her on it. She laughs and giggles. It always cracks me up when she asks me to hold on to her. This ride only has a metal lap bar and it does feel like you might fly out as the ride goes into it's dropping motion. I was curious as to how many of these rides still exist. I was able to find out in the USA, there are at least eight Troikas in operation and they are located at Cedar Point, Palace Playland, Kings Island, Elitch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Fun Spot Amusement Park, Six Flags Great America, and Six Flags Over Texas. So get on board this classic Trokia ride and feel the spin.

What makes this coaster take my breath away (literally at times) is the fact that all you have is a frickin lap belt and no harness. There's not really even anything to hold on to except for this little loop on your seat belt. And i dont think its even made for that. I just tried finding anything that I can wrap my hands on to feel somewhat secure before conquering this giant of a coaster. And yes, although only being secured by a measley lap belt, you go upside down in loops. So the only thing holding you in to your seat other than that lap belt is pure G-force. That first drop is all that. Its the steepest one here at the park at an 85 degree angle and you are going at it at such a high speed! Pure adrenaline rush for you junkies out there. Keep in mind that this is another wooden coaster here but so much smoother than that of the Viper and old man American Eagle. I believe this is the best roller coaster here at Six Flags and of course, my favorite. Try riding it at night and enjoy the view before that first 180 ft drop!

The structure for this coaster is crazy it's the first of the wood meets steal hybrids I've seen that had this type of inversion where you spend a good amount of time upside down as the hang time is just not seen anywhere else! Goliath doesn't let you down in anyway whatsoever at any point as the entire ride was smooth and just super enjoyable at every twist and turn to the point of which it feels like you are still riding the classic wooden coaster right until you see that next Hybrid inversion coming at you with a good amount of speed! The line for Goliath can get super long I say this as the day we came to the park it wasn't that busy so do make sure you hit this ride early! Goliath here is awesome and I'll be looking forward to riding it the next time I visit this radical park of Six Flags Great America!

Condor - Ride and spin to the top and enjoy the view

FLYING HIGH The…read moreCondor opened in 1991 and is located in Orleans Place next to the Superman roller coaster and Rue le Dodge, which is French for bumper cars. It was relocated to Gurnee from Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. The ride was installed in 1988 at Six Flags Great Adventure and was one of the first of three production models to appear in the US. The ride is manufactured by HUSS of Bremen, Germany. HUSS introduced the ride in 1984 at the World's Fair in New Orleans and it was called the Cyclo Tower. Unfortunately it spent most of its time closed because of operating problems. It took an additional 4 years of re-engineering before the ride was put into production. Six Flags purchased two of the rides and had planned to use the condor as part of its ride rotation program. It was an idea for parks to have new rides each year at a reduced cost of purchasing a new ride for the parks. Luckily for us it landed in Gurnee and never flew away. The ride is a 112 foot tower and offers amazing views of the park and parking lot. I love going up to the top and looking for my car. My little one just loves this ride and it never gets old to her. We have been riding on it together since she has been tall enough. It is a great family attraction because riders can sit together. One child can sit in front of you in each car between your legs and they will feel safe and secure. It reduces their stress level making them feel protected. The ride was designed to be programmed for various speed cycles but at Six Flags it only has two. The normal operation during the year and a version during Fright Fest where it slows down at the top. I wish that Six Flags would actually utilize the programming and make the ride more of an adventure. Riders would never know if there next ride was going to be fast or slow or in reverse. Let's mix it up because we have the technology. At night this is one of the best rides in the park to look at. It says fun and carnival as it lights up the night sky. If you are attracted to the ride then that is a good thing. The lighting was designed for the "European Fair Circuit" where rides compete against each other to sell tickets. The flashier the ride the more people wanted to ride it. Luckily for me it's included in my season pass or my little one would have cleaned out my wallet. There are 28 gondolas all painted to resemble a condor. Riders climb in as two riders or they can ride solo. In addition to an added seat belt there is an original pneumatic air pressure sliding gate. I love informing my little one that when I was a kid there were no added safety features like seat belts. Thanks a lot insurance companies. It freaks her out and she often asks why I never flew out. The ride has a dual rotation as it moves up the tower. It is fun to watch but even more fun to ride. There is also a tilting motion of the gondolas when it reaches the outer part of its rotation. It makes you feel like you are actually turning. We love riding the condor and a trip to Six Flags would not be complete if we didn't jump on board for a whirl. My little one and I often make a bird noise like "Ca-cow" as we spin to the top. It is one of those traditions that I hope she shares with her children one day.
