The café itself is two stories and the ground floor is really where you want to be as it is the most charming section. In the back you will find the immaculate confectionery/baking area. The beautiful wooden ceiling makes for a cozy atmosphere and the savory and sweet displays leave you wanting more. And if just sitting in the café isn't enough, visit their Museum where a tour guide will explain about the history. And even if you never venture inside, spend some time admiring the display window as they decorate it beautifully. Drinks -Melange: Delicious. Perfectly creamy with a slight bitterness. The frothed milk is lovely. Sweets -Eduard-Sachertorte: while it is moist, apart from the decadent thick chocolate icing, the cake part lacks flavor and spicing. Because the apricot jam is solely under the chocolate icing, the flavoring isn't as strong and doesn't help make the cake smoother and as moist as that by Café Sacher. Sorry, but I have to say Café Sacher wins. Read about the rivalry here. -Apfelstrudel: Ehh, I found the apple strudel to be a bit dry and lacking in flavor. It does have a good consistency, though and the apples are cooked to perfection, even if they do lack spicing and sweetness. I'm not a fan of Demel Wien. The crowds are unbearable; the staff perfunctory. The displays are beautiful, but none of the cakes I tried (at least half a dozen over several days) was particularly good. (I only bought cakes from the display cases at the front. I've never eaten in the cafe -- so I can't comment on any cakes that might be offered in the cafe yet are not available for purchase at the front of the shop.) I wouldn't recommend this shop to a friend. And the really weird thing is that some of the pastries that are sold under the Demel brand in other cities (in Tokyo, for instance) are truly exquisite while those at the flagship shop in Vienna are rather sad. read more

Out of all the coffee shops i have visited in Vienna, Demel was my favorite. It is very touristy and crowded. The best time to visit is early in a morning while most tourists are still sleeping. We had coffee , tea and some pastries. The Sacher cake was wonderful in my opinion. We bought the whole thing to go. Service was very friendly and quick. I really don't understand why so many people complain about slow and rude service in Vienna. We stayed in Vienna for three weeks and not once did i experience bad service. Nobody was rude to us or got angry because we did not speak German. Our waitress was a very nice young lady who spoke English and helped us with the menu. The ladies in the Demel store where we bought cakes and candies were also very helpful. The only negative point to this place is that it gets overly crowded after 12 pm. I'd recommend getting a ticket for a cake at the front and sitting outside instead of staying for lunch too (like I did) and sitting toward the back. The service is very chaotic. We were sitting near where people were waiting to be seated and watching the varying levels of confusion. There are lots of tables towards the back (and upstairs), a sign saying to wait to be seated, but very rare for anyone to be there to seat people. Lead to people just sitting down, or walking away. The cakes are as good as anywhere else but the service gets it 3 stars. read more

Went for breakfast and I was hoping to get kaiserschmarrn but they don't make until 11:30 a.m. I had pot of coffee and croissant instead. Even at a pot, there was less coffee than you get in N America as single serving. It also wasn't very good coffee. The croissant was excellent- light and flaky and buttery. Husband had his usual apple strudel which he didn't like because he doesn't like nuts in his apple strudel. You can look into a part of the kitchen where they're making the desserts and that was interesting. In Vienna's tourist street, near St. Stephen's Cathedral, Demel fits right into the bourgeois shops next door. It is crowded with tourists and employees are standoffish. There are multiple areas, starting with the pastry case in the front with Sachertorte, a bar behind, and a little store to the right. Outside, you'll find seating for actual meals but I didn't notice anyone in there. You can even peek into the back to watch the bakers and chefs working. The Sachertorte I purchased was rather good, not very sweet, and came in a cute pink box to go, but the whole experience left a lot to be desired. read more

Incredible pastries, beautiful shop in a great part of town. I was on a day-long tour of Viennese pastries, so I must admit I only ate one thing, but I still feel confident giving this place five stars. On presentation alone - this place is amazing: high ceilings, classic design, everything super clean, well-displayed goods, and friendly efficient service. But the cake - oh boy! The entire cafe reeks of cigarette smoke - none of the other cafes I visited was this smoky. The non-smoking section is upstairs, which is silly because smoke rises. Hello, geniuses!?!?! I visited on Dec 22, a Sunday at 1 PM, and there was no baking going on for the customers to see. No bakers at all to be seen. The milchrahmstrudel (milk-cream strudel) was too eggy. The apfelstrudel was boring and tasteless. Yelpers had recommended having the strudel with vanilla cream. I pad 1 Euro for this disgusting egg-nog sauce - tasted like raw eggs. Absolutely disgusting. Folks sitting at the table near me saw how disgusted I was and said, 'Pretty disappointing, huh? Try Aida.' Service was rude, aloof, and condescending. A local Viennese friend of ours brought us here for coffee and cake. The coffee was excellent and the cake was the best carrot cake I've ever had. Neither was as "sugary" as you might expect in the States, but I consider that a positive. If you love McDonald's coffee (I don't) and donuts (I do love donuts), this might not be the place for you. Very cozy café and sweets shop! An absolute enjoyment to have a coffee and cake here with your friends or family. Their cake tastes wonderful and they have many choices from the common teramisu to all the fancy cakes. Their delicate "Cat's tongue " chocolate are best for souvenir. During the new year time, they will set up a booth outside the cafe and make mini Sacher torte for you. They pour hot melted chocolate freshly on to each small cake and the line of people lining up to buy this delicious cake is extremely long but totally worth the wait! Demel offered a very elegant and luxurious atmosphere. Their pastries were very fancy and though not that magnificent in taste, but they certainly were good. Their Melange Coffee was excellent and delicious though. Free Wi-Fi for a limited time only, and they even had an shop where you could buy souvenirs similar to Angelina's in Paris. They had tons of chocolates, cakes and even proper food upstairs and a kitchen/bakery inside the building. If you are looking to relax with style and just enjoy a gorgeous sunny day in Wien, Demel for sure is a must as the location is right next to all the AAA-shopping stores. read more

My family & friends ordered the café latte, espresso, lemon & strawberry ice cream & the Demels Mohr im Hemd which is their version of our U.S. lava cake w/ strawberries & homemade whipped cream on the plate! Perhaps I'm unimpressed only because I had such high expectations, but I found the actual pastries to be dry and sort of bland. We were looking for an Austrian pastry so we decided to come here given how great it's supposed to be. My husband got the truffle, which was extremely rich but actually quite tasty although nothing spectacular. I got the carrot cake which did not taste much like carrot cake and was very dry. 3.5 stars. A well-known rival of Café Sacher, we had to come here for a comparison. The first time we came (Thursday around lunchtime), we saw a long line for the upstairs cafe that people were waiting at the staircase. We left. The second time we came (Sunday afternoon), there was hardly any line and got a table in less than 5 minutes. But in case you have to wait, at least you could observe the open-viewing bakery and watch the bakers prepare the cakes. The decor of Demel (upstairs) is a little less formal than Sacher with wooden chairs marble tables, color-painted walls, but it still has a touch of elegance with its colorful glass chandeliers and paintings of aristocrats. Service was friendlier in Demel. We could look closer at the cake selection and order directly at the cake counter, and the server was nice to explain (in English) what cake is what. We tried apple strudel, Sachertorte, and the Annatorte (Demel's original chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, orange liqueur, and nougat). The strudel and Sachertorte were good, but the Annatorte was a bit heavy and too much liqueur for me to enjoy. We had Eiskaffee (coffee with ice cream), Melange (Austrian espresso with a bit of milk), and Fiaker (espresso with cherry brandy and whipped cream), and those were all great drinks. The price is just as high for cakes and coffees (about 35 EUR for 3 people). One can see that Demel blatantly profits on tourists with its cake shop and souvenir store, selling expensive goodies like chocolate, postcards, vanilla sugar, etc. As a tourist, I did buy some chocolate for my co-workers, and I must admit, Demel knows what they are doing. We just went up to the looking glass and ordered what made our eyes grow larger. Although everything we tried was good, it also wasn't jaw-dropping. And the prices are slightly on the higher side. Service is terribly slow since there's a high turnover of patrons coming in only to try the dessert. Our whole meal took about 2 hours from beginning to end. One thing I did like about Demel was the atmosphere. We all felt like little girls again having a tea party but with coffee and cake. Finally, I am sitting and having three pastries and trying each one after the other with a cup of espresso. It took 2 hours of driving from Brno. But it wasn't just for Dremel as I have to take my flight back from Vienna. Driving inside the city took an effort and more so to find a parking spot and then get to a tabac store to buy the sticker. After I had parked only then I noticed while walking to Demel that I had missed the garage. Oh well. But what about the pastries and coffee? It was more of a pilgrimage and the revelation was that it may be the oldest and the best we had back then and strongly recommend visiting if you are visiting Vienna, however, the world has passed this place by in terms of gourmet quality. It's one thing to stick with the heritage but still a place needs to be kept maintained. The sitting area and the rooms need work. Entrance is dingy and dark. For example, the Central cafe goes quite some time back too but they have kept their place lively and can have the same or may I dare to say better gastronomic experience. On the other hand, Demel looks and feels less commercial and more like a mom and pop store and maybe I would want that to change. I did like the fact how you can see the chefs make the pastries behind the glass wall. Just for that it deserves a visit. It's amazing how much pastry they can make with amazing consistency. To select the pastries you go to the side room and an attendant writes them down on a piece of paper that you can then hand it over to your server. Well organized. I also tried their appetizer sandwiches and they were good too. I do feel guilty of waste as I shouldn't have ordered three pastries as I couldn't finish them. Demel is one of my favorite coffee spots in Vienna. For a place that's so well-known and relatively touristy, I never have a problem finding a great table relatively quickly. Per the trip to Vienna, a coworker highly recommended checking out this cafe for its pastries. Being that our party of four and a five-year old went a little later in the day, we opted to get lunch as well. The biggest disappointment and turn off to this place is its horrendous service (although I did notice the ladies were friendly to those who spoke the language). It was rude from waitress to waitress to the third waitress and being from NYC, it was still a pretty severe service in comparison. As for food, ordered a variety of dishes from small sandwiches to sausages to goulash, etc. And other than the shredded horseradish "sauce", everything else was pretty average. Same with the coffee and some kind of ice cream mixed with liquid chocolate. So this was not a bill I was happy to pay for regarding the service or food (I'm usually semi-content if a restaurant at least hits one of the two in terms of quality). I almost still wanted to order the pastry, which you have to go select at the "buffet" where they give you a number of a ticket in which you then have to hand to your waitress. But after being ignored multiple times and even after having got the ticket, I said "no way". This place falls straight into the unfortunate overrated "famed" spots. Maybe the service is better strictly on the first floor compared the sit downs on the higher floors. And maybe the pastries significantly outshine the savory meals. Can't speak to that. Note: Not child-friendly. She brought over four sets of the plate, fork, and spoon. When we asked for a fifth set, she looks at us and counts the four adults saying with an attitude "but I gave you the correct amount of utensils" while looking at the kid using his fork. I go here everytime I'm in Vienna. I love the bulding and the cakes. The staff is kind of...well overlooking a bit, but that' fine. I don't care. The cakes are really amazing, they are real pieces of art. And of course they taste great. Everything tastes as it should, real artisan stuff. I usually go here on Mondays since during the weekend there is a long line of people waiting for the table. Sometimes the line goes all the way downstairs and to the street. The coffee is good too, but my thing is the cakes. The only thing that is far from perfect are the toilettes. I expected them to be as neat and posh as the café itself. Great disappointment. They really need a serious repair. But that's the only downside of this place. If you decide to ignore the tourists and just enjoy the cakes... I recommend the Maroni one. Yumzah. read more
