Our family arrived after 10 PM and was very tired from an afternoon and evening on the road. Staff was exceptional on getting us quickly checked in so we could get to the room and bed down in preparation for a 545 AM departure. My son needed a tooth brush and they accommodated at the front desk during check in. The room key opened without a hitch. An immediate odor struck us all upon entering. It was not foul, but WOW! The odor was a thick musty smell. With it now pushing 1030 we dealt with it. The room was adequate, but dated and was commiserate with the price range of the room. Everything was clean in our double including sheets. The mattress and pillows passable. The plumbing worked fine, but the air seems to struggle during our mid August visit. They offered a FREE breakfast however we left prior to it being available. Our van was loaded loaded with everything for moving my son into college and there was no issue with security thankfully. This was huge! So the final score as previously stated is a 2.5 and I'm rounding up with super friendly desk staff and secure parking lot. The big negative is the musty room. It's impossible for me to know if this issue runs throughout the hotel. I would not return.

I wasn't familiar with "South Charleston" as a separate city but it worked out since I had a rental car and it was a short drive to Charleston (where downtown and the Capitol is). Maintenance was lacking with a dripping and mildewy shower but it was clean otherwise. Breakfast was fine. No pool but fitness area was a good size. I liked the patterned window shade and the usb cables by the bed. Lots of parking. Nice staff except the male janitor/maintenance person who openly complained, had a wrapped wrist one day and smoked while working outside. Finally the "upgraded" me. I was put into a handicap room. I immediately noticed an odd smell. As the night went on, it became clear it was a distinct urine smell. I was so grossed out. We tell her we do not want the room anymore. She says do what you want but we are going to charge you for it. We ask if there is another place with a pool and she say not around here. So we leave and can see right next door there is a pool at Country Inn & Suites by Radisson. We go there and get a room. I tell them what happened and the desk clerks tell us that the Microtel send their guests over to use the pool and that their pool at Microtel has been down for a while now. The Manger tells me to talk to Microtel's manger. So we go back and give Microtel the keys back. I ask when the manger will be in ? The rude women tells me he is there now. I am like you could not tell me this before? She gets him, he is very nice and refunds my money back. She stands there saying I cannot believe you are giving them a refund. When we get back to Country inn the clerks tells us that the woman from Microtel called and yelled at them for helping me and telling to go see the manger. I would not stay there.

She was very helpful guiding us super out of town visitors with guidance as far as sights to see and the bestcar to drive for our tri- state adventure. The desk is super easy to reach within the airport and you can choose the car you'd like in a covered lot. This is convenient during inclement weather. All in all we were very satisfied with our trip!
