Numerous complaints how Del Ray eye associates force you to pay $125 for a refraction test that you don't need. This test is to fit you with proper glasses. When you tell them I'm not her for glasses or I just had the test done somewhere else they threaten that if you don't give them the $125 for this unnecessary test you can't see the Dr. They prey upon ppl who come in with a eye problem and don't want to leave without seeing the Dr so you relent and allow this abuse of your funds to take place . Had double vision saw a optomotrist who examined me including a refraction test this is to see whether or not you need eyeglasses. I don't wear eyeglasses, but I allowed it to be done because I had double vision and wanted to let the optometrist try to make a determination as to why this existed. He found no problem with my eyes. He charged me $35.00 for this refraction test that Medicare will not pay for. He gave me a prescription for glasses. I did not fill. I had an MRI and CAT scan with contrast at the hospital next which showed no pathology. I then saw an ophthalmologist for a thorough exam I was told nothing can be found that is wrong with my eyes so I should see a Neuro ophthalmologist. I made an appointment with Delray eye Associates to see Dr. Schaefer By the time the appointment came up, the double vision resolved, and my vision was perfect. At my Delray eye associates, appointment I was told that I would have to have a refraction test done for $125. I told the office manager I am not there for an eyeglasses that I had this test done two weeks ago and received the prescription that I'm not using. I'm there just to see the neuro ophthalmologist for an opinion as to why I had double vision that has resolved. I was told all patients must have a refraction test for $125. I told them I'm not here for a duplicate of a test I don't need and that was done 2 weeks ago. I don't need glasses I'll take the prescription and put in the garbage. That's not why I'm here. I was told if I don't pay the 125 I can't see the doctor, not wanting to leave wanting a consultation I paid $125 for the duplicate unnecessary test I previously had two weeks prior and that I did not need. The test was done a second prescription was issued to me and I immediately discarded it because it was of no use to me. My vision is crystal clear. Dr. Schaeffer was excellent no problem with him or his examination. His expertise is obvious. Just want everyone to know how they extracted for no reason $125 out of my wallet. Beware. read more

i moved to boca 4 years ago and was seeing 2 doctors at Delray Eye Associates, one for retina issues and one for contact lenses. I have a few visual issues that require special contact lenses. They take 3 weeks for completion. In Oct 2023, i had my annual exam and new lenses were needed. Unfortunately, the office never reached me to pick up my lenses, so around Thanksgiving, I reached out and they forgot to follow up and my lenses where nowhere to be found. i didn't get my lenses until 12/28/2023 a day before i was leaving on an overseas vacation. Office Manager made many promises, of which she lived up to none. The service was poor and disappointing at best. I thought i would give it one more try as i really liked the doctors. so, i re-ordered my 6 pack of lenses via phone, gave them my credit card info. 3 weeks go by so, i follow up. Daily as nobody got back to me. About a week later, they admitted that they forgot to put in the order. Again, it took over 2 months to get my contact lenses. so, now i am attempting to get my medical records. I followed their instructions to a tee. on 1/23/2025, i sent my request with the appropriate form, which again includes my CC info. They say it could take up to 10 business days. Needless to say, NOTHING! I have resent, I have called the office and just on hold forever. This is what happens when a large corporation buys out medical practices. read more

I had to pay $125 for a glasses prescription to see an eye doctor here, and it was so far off everything is a blur through the glasses in that prescription. I was refused when I asked for a refund of the $125. They didn't give me the prescription that day, I had to call and ask for it to be emailed to me, and they acted like it was highly unusual I would ask for my prescription! My one star is due to the prescription for glasses that I cannot see through. The staff was very nice. The doctor was ok, he is highly trained in his field. read more

Recently moved down here and need an eye Dr. Called and stopped by the place to inquire if they took no patients. The person on the phone was rude and when I went I. To inquire the front desk staff was rude as well. I asked a simple question about insurance and when I asked a follow up question the person at the front desk who was not even part of the conversation interjected she's been here 15 years she knows what she's doing. Needless to say I found another eye Dr for my glasses and am very satisfied. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague. read more

Overpaid my Medicare deductible in early January 2024. Have been trying to get my refund from them. They keep telling me the check went in the mail on 09/22/2024. To this date I've received no refund. They've changed their story multiple times about the refund. Certainly would not recommend their policy on doing business. STAY AWAY!!! HED THIS ADVISE. Although I feel I got a good exam from Dr. Winnick, his statement that he is always available to speak to you is false. They will never put you in touch with him. Upon his advice and research, I decided to go with the Zeiss lenses they sell. No wonder they push these. They are costly. I picked a frame and had the lenses made. Upon picking these up, all my eyes could see were the top of the frames and virtually no mid-section sight on my progressives.. After fighting with the optical lady and demanding a refund, they said I had to give them a chance to rectify the situation. After heating and twisting the frame to no avail, she said, "Oh, I see we ordered the short version of the lens not the long. They are reordering and I will see what they return with. My Costco glasses with $180 lenses were better. THEY DENY THAT THEY HAVE A 30 DAY REFUND POLICY AND IF THE NEW LENSES AREN'T RIGHT I AM STOPPING THE $1200 CHARGE AND OPENING A CASE WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. read more

I would have given zero stars if possible. Please go anywhere but Delray Eye Associates. We made a huge mistake bringing my mother here, because this is just like Florida's "Medicare clinics" popular in the late 1990s - older people stood outside for 6 minutes of a rushed, bored, arrogant doctor's time, and endured a loud and rude staff. My mother waited 1.5 hours in packed rooms to be diagnosed with a serious corneal condition -- and the rushed doctor offered little explanation and no treatment options. My mother wanted to go here because her vision is deteriorating and an appointment was available quickly. Now she's waiting to see a specialist in Palm Beach Gardens or Miami. Yes, we read the doctors' bios. If they're that good, why are they practicing in a Medicare-only office? Don't most "good" doctors want a mix of patients? I would die of depression working here. While billing Medicare is easier than billing all the carriers out there today, I know zero excellent doctors who are Medicare only. This is NOT how/where any staff member makes money, either. We received a prescription for glasses, which my mother unfortunately dropped off in that wretched optical shop. That girl in there needs to head to Burger King or a warehouse; she is condescending, rude and unfit to deal with humans. It was painful to hear and watch her interact with my mother. My brother walked out to avoid telling her where to go. I've heard this was once a good practice. I think it's a horrible And sub-standard place for new patients. Dr Winnick is an excellent opthamologist however, he spends less time with the patient than the assistants. I have been to this office twice for routine eye exams where I encountered inexperienced practitioners who did the bulk of the exam. The factory approach doesn't cut it in any medical practice. I like the old fashioned approach in which the doctor is the sole person conducting an exam. I won't be back!!! read more

Wow... i cant believe that I was in the same place as the people who gave less than glowing reviews. Yes, its an older crowd. so what? Its a medical practice, not a disco. You had to wait?Everyone waits. Refractions? Everyone gets them so that the doctor gets a more open view of your eye. $95? There's a sign at the front desk informing you of that. Every office I've ever been in requires it. Too much? Look at the price of gas In terms of the assistants, they are there to get you prepared for the examination, not for tea and crumpets. Best doctors I've seen Bascom Palmer trained. That carries weight. The examining physician suggested a route thst does not involve surgery, even though he himself is a surgeon. So far so good, and if I need the surgery, I'll know it was as a secondary option. The woman in opticals was as sweet as could be. The patient before me was blind and 92. She was treated with the respect of a grandchild towards a grandparent. Wish I knew what y'all were to expecting , but I'm satisfied. read more

When you schedule your yearly 12 month appt. they will schedule it 14 months out. If you care about your eyes don't come here because they certainly DON'T!!!!!! delray Eye takes advantage of anyone over 65. They are despicable from the front desk to the doctors. They want you to sign a form for $125 for refraction. I went there for an emergency issue with my eye. They said the doctor would not see me unless I paid $125 had my eyes dilated and did a full eye exam because I had not been there in over a year. They totally take advantage of Medicare. Stay away. So many other excellent eye facilities, down here in South Florida, that to not do this. read more

If at all possible avoid this place. I think at one time it was a good eye center. Sadly that is not the case now. I agree with above reviews -doctor and staff seem overly concerned about money. I felt pressured by my doctor into using the eyeglass store in the same office. So I did. The lens fell out into my hand less than 24 hours after I picked them up. When I returned staff said that my glasses were bent and possibly had been dropped and that could cause the lens to come out. Yes the staff is unfriendly and officious, but the doctors are top notch. I have had 4 surgeries and had great experiences and finding good doctors in Florida is no easy task. These doctors went to the best schools and intern, residency and fellowship programs. So I guess it boils down to what you want, a great staff or the best doctors. read more

Oh dear, well please just be super careful of coming here. Not going to name any names because I truly still love and respect the doc that I had here but I will be honest. I was specifically referred to my corneal specialist here 6 months ago when I moved from Tampa(that should say a lot in and of itself). I had a blast here every time up until recently. I'm in the medical field as well, so you can bet I stay on top of all the care I receive, but my doc seems to honestly be practicing with an approach that is decades old and is just not up to date with his info. He seemed a bit uninformed about some of the meds he prescribed me and literally exploded on me when I tried to respectfully explain to him that the some of the drops that I was on are not optimal for my disease long term and why that is, and is why I was coming in every week for pain and was having light sensitivity, and I brought up suggestions on what we could possibly switch to instead or remove altogether if he agrees. He literally ended our convo with "you're not the doctor here and I don't have all day. you can pay your money and leave and you can keep your next appt with me next week so we can repeat that test and we'll go from there" and stormed out. He's NEVER spoken to me that way, and I still can't believe those words came out of a doc who I truly loved having, and I'm not going to lie, That actually made me cry when I got back into my car. The tech who always stays in the room to help him looked at me as well for a couple seconds after he left because she couldn't believe what happened either. I immediately found a different doc and am now so satisfied with the one I have. I don't know why this doc was making things more complicated than it needs to be and was stressing him and myself out because my current doc was able to just take me off of the med that I had suggested, and my eye pain and light sensitivity went away. Another thing, my doc was ready to diagnose me with glaucoma and was ready to send me over to the glaucoma specialist here just from basing it off of two OCT scans that were done on my eye two months apart. Glaucoma is a multifactorial progressive disease that is diagnosed over time through more than just one or two scans/ numbers, i.e dilation exams, visual fields. OCT scans can be vague and can show discrepancies, even if taken back to back, from things such as eye movements, and therefore cannot be used solely to diagnose glaucoma. Im 21 and a nurse and even I know these things.. come on a bit now. Of course I went to my new doc, had a full workup again... and he said that this is not glaucoma either, not even close. I also don't understand why my doc has to spew so much BS when he doesn't truly know the answer to something I ask rather than just admitting that he doesn't know. His answers really give me a chuckle sometimes bc it's so ridiculous and doesn't even make sense lol. So many other things to mention, but I will stop here. Yes, I looked at my doc's bio on here... you literally could have fooled me though based off of my experience here, honestly. My life long lesson is to never base anyone solely off of their credentials. With that being said, the docs here should still be able to help you but it doesn't hurt to also get a second opinion, esp if you're coming in for a cornea problem and seeing a cornea specialist here for it. I understand that even though my doc has 40 years of experience, my particular case could have just been insanely complicated and something he has never personally dealt with before and was why he didn't exactly know how to treat me optimally(or at least that's what I hope was the biggest issue rather than the fact that he was just extremely uninformed about a lot things), and was why it seemed as if we were just going in a constant cycle with my pain and not getting anywhere. Also was informed that there were 3 or 4 other pts of his who were also "revolving door" and were coming in every week too for issues. Sure hope that the reason why those pts aren't getting better isn't because of this dr's ineptitude in some situations. Contrary to what everyone else has said, I personally think the staff and techs are all amazing and super sweet. They've always been so attentive to my needs and I am going to miss them loads! Honestly bummed to leave, but I don't think it's safe for me to continue to have him care for my eyes anymore. read more

I was referred here by several of my friends and other Dr's of mine. Everyone here is very helpful. It is a busy office but very organized. You do have to wait a limited amount of time but your visits are very thorough and often for follow up from procedures. I would highly recommend the doctors in this office. read more

Don't go here. It is a very impersonal place. They are overly zealous about getting paid and make you sign you life away before seeing you. I came for a sty and they forced me to get a refraction. I had to pay $95 even though my eye doctor in Illinois said this was totally unnecessary. He offered to send my records as I had this done less than 3 weeks ago. They refused and would not see me unless they could do it. Just another way to milk the patient IMO. There are better places to go where you are treated fairly. read more

They refused to examine my wife without giving her eyes a dye yes that takes two hours.She had an itch in the skin in the corner of her eye. Why would you give someone an expensive test before examining them? Why put dye in their eyes if they do not complain of having a vision problem? Do they just want to pad the bill of elderly seniors who usually go along with whatever they say? Do they see their customers as cash cows?We left without having an exam. I went complaining of a lash stuck in my eye. The office told me that medicare insists I have a complete exam. I asked the office not to dilate my eyes as I had just recently had that done, and it burns my eyes when they dilate them. They told me the doctor would not do the exam without the dilation and proceeded to put the drops into my eyes without telling me what she was doing. It was assault. I then saw the doctor. The doctor insisted that I had a dry eye problem and recommended I see a surgeon. My eye has been constantly tearing for two weeks, so I know it is not a dry eye problem. I explained this, but it fell upon deaf ears. I told him I didn't need surgery and proceeded to leave. As I went to check out they insisted I owed them $95.00 for a refraction after telling me that Medicare was going to cover the exam. They did not tell me about any charges prior to being seen by the doctor. They then told me if I didn't pay the $95.00 charge now, that they would put me into collections. I left. I would not recommend this office to anyone. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more
