I took my daughter here because she loves gems and rocks. She has studied and wants to be a geologist. We were kind of disappointed with the person that was "identifying" her gems and rocks as she was inaccurate about most of the descriptions. I would give it a zero star if allowed. This place does not accommodate a large family. Two Caucasian ladies behind the counter were rude and telling my family to get out of their way when we were the only customers. When confronted, they lied and did not take responsibility for their words and treatment towards my family. The owner of this business should evaluate their employees customer service skills. The ladies ruined the kids experience of gem panning. The owner needs to be accurate with his or her response. The two rude employees were demanding my family to move out of the way when we were waiting for the instruction from the gem panning worker. We were the only customers there and the ladies should have been polite and use their customer services skills in proceeding in telling how my family was in their way. Instead they demanded us to "move out of the way" with a rude attitude. While we were present there were no authorities called. I have been to many business establishment, but have never been treated so rudely like I have been at this place. read more

This was such a fun and informational experience!! We went in originally thinking it was kind of gimicky, but it turned out to be a really awesome time. Hallie was really easy going and didn't make us feel pressured into the mining portion. We had such a good time with her that we ended up doing a second bucket. Jean is the most knowledgeable person about stones! She went through what everything we found was, told us about the process of cutting and polishing, offered to have ours done and sent to us. She helped us pick a geode to open and gave us good tips and pointers on what different characteristics on the outside mean for what you'll get inside. The man that was working there (I didn't catch his name) was also super friendly and funny. He was making jokes with us and telling us some of his stories too. Our granddaughters truly enjoyed this activity. They were so exited to find pretty gem rocks...two really large gem stones. There was a pretty chrystal that is said to bring good luck...that was the favorite! They do try to sell you to have the gems polished and set into something. Our girls were just happy to take the gems home in a box that also contains an identification card. It takes about 1/2 hour. The girls split a $30 00 bucket. Wow this place is a joke, you buy buckets of sand that they mix simple gems into. 5 gal buckets start at $15 and go up to $125. When you are done they sit you down to tell you what you "found" and sell you to make it in to jewelry. It's a super direct and hard sales approach. What a fun little stop in Downtown Dells!! It's a rock shop and a place to "mine" your own gems. Yes, it is not real mining. You're not going to walk out with a pocketful of valuable gems. You buy a bucket of sand. The buckets of sand are priced at several levels. The most basic level is just uncut gems and minerals, but at higher levels they have added small, cut gems. We found 2 buckets of the lowest priced buckets was just fine. You sit in front of a sluice line and pour a little of the bucket's contents into a sieve and then wash away the sand in the water, pulling out any interesting finds. It goes quickly. They then walk you through what you found. We did find a nice handful of cool looking uncut gems like garnet and amethyst. They then will offer to cut and/or set your stones for you. This gets really pricey, but just politely decline. The staff was friendly. The experience was fun (we did it with a 9 and a 7 year old). It's ultimately a tourist trap, but a unique tourist trap and we did not leave feeling like it was time and money misspent. Quite the opposite!! read more

Perfect spot if you want to be followed around by middle aged white women who assume you're trying to steal everything you're looking at. Honestly she wasn't even lowkey about any of it. Just coming up right beside my friends and I and messing with things in the shelves as if she were facing the store. I'm sure theft is prevalent with the amount of tourists and traffic that comes through but would it kill you to watch from afar? The store isn't that big I'm sure you all can manage. Then 20 minutes into our annoying shopping experience she wants to ask us if we need help finding anything. No thanks, ma'am. I would however, appreciate some personal space. read more

There's not a lot to do in the Dells in the winter so I'm glad we found this place. We walked in and Crystal was very helpful she explained the process and was extremely friendly. We picked 2 $30 buckets. Then my girls went through the mining process. When they were done another women sat down with us and explained to us what each stone was. The give you option to cut your finds but we decided just to keep the stones as is. I expected to get a few stones but my girls got a good amount. My girls had so much fun we ended up punching another $15 bucket. My girls are 3 and seven, but both my husbend and I admit we secretly wanted to buy ourself a bucket. read more

My family (hubby, two young kids, and myself) stopped in as a treat for our anniversary. We ended up purchasing one of the more expensive buckets to sift through for gems. We got a fair amount, but the cut/polished gem in my bucket was chipped. The manager took my information and offered to send it to me in the mail when a replacement came in (they didn't have a replacement in stock - had to order and wait two weeks). So two weeks goes by, no gem in the mail. The gal made a mistake on my address (which was correct on their document) and the stone was sent back to them. I got a phone call from the manager saying she was going to priority ship it to me (as she made the mistake), stating I would get it by Friday. Friday and Saturday goes by (and I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt) and still no gem. So I call and get one of the owners. She didn't have all the info on my situation and offers to call me back in 15 minutes. Nearly an hour later, I get a phone call back saying that the package wasn't mailed and it would go out next week (seeing as it's the Memorial Day weekend). I'm frustrated and feel like I deserve a refund. What a runaround AND still no replacement gem. read more
