I was adamant that given the compact-wooden-pod nature of the place, I should only go in extreme weather conditions in order to make the trip all the more exciting. In beloved but rainy Manchester, blue-skies and sunshine qualifies as extreme conditions. As such, during a sunny June Sunday, I seized the opportunity to sip on a 'Grindsmith' flat white, with sunshine beaming through the open façade (almost entirely made of glass) - I was not disappointed. An excellent decision on my part to go when sunny and excellent brewing skills from Grindsmith as far as kick-ass flat white's are concerned. Grindsmith offers little when it comes to food, there was a very small selection of baked goods but they looked rustic and appealing. I wasn't expecting an extensive food menu, nor was I disappointed by its lack. What is pretty darn cool however, is that Grindsmith stock 'Ginger's Comfort Emporium' ice-cream - absolutely the best ice-cream I have ever tasted! (See my review of the cafe in Affleks palace) Marry this with a Grindsmith espresso and you've got an Affogato sent directly from heaven. £3 well spent I'd say - a delightful weekend treat. Take a walk to Greengate Square. Look, I know the Premiere Inn there is really ugly and a bit of an off-putter, but once inside Grindsmith's coffee haven, you'll forget such an architectural disaster ever happened. The service was quick and after ordering, my food came soon after. I enjoyed the gravy more than the barbecue sauce. It had a bit of a sweet taste to it which works well with the chicken (I did find it a bit salty). The portion size was good for the price. I'm not too much of a fan of sweet things but I saw that they had pancakes and would try that next time I check this place out!

But the host was very lovely and gracious and people understood. Food wise I went for the shakshuka, it sounded nice, and it really was ... it was also EXTREMELY hot because it was served in cast iron and kept its heat. It was delicious. The toast was crispy, the tomatoes were tasty, chickpeas were crunchy and a nice addition, The added sausage was very delicious, the eggs were good although I would have preferred if they had some runny yolk but its almost impossible to get that with baked eggs. Server was lovely, staff were great, absolutely need to return here when I can.

The full cafe had (unlimited) nice drinks and fast wifi for £12/hour. We reserved and prepaid online a few days in advance (they reserve 50% capacity for reservations and 50% for walkins), and sat for an hour (it's £1/5 minutes to stay past the hour reservation (the same rate except in 5 minute increments)). We were wishing for a few more cats - but the 7 or so that were out were some nice, high quality cats. Top tip: buy cat treats from the cafe - the cats will love you for the rest of the hour.

We were a little worried...never go into an empty cafe! There must be a reason for the lack of customers. Our doubts were immediately dispelled by a warm & friendly welcome. We discussed the menu at the bar and decided to have an 'Alll Day Breakfast' ( £5.00) and my wife chose the steak sandwich with chips and salad ( £5.95) We sat near the canal side window and watched as the rain battered down into the canal. After a short wait we were served our drinks , followed by our meals. When I looked at my breakfast I thought that I would never eat all of that. 2 slices of toast, 2 sausages, 2 slices of bacon, fried egg, large field mushroom and a lovely fresh fried tomato. This was both lovely to look at and better to eat. My wife's steak sandwich was equally impressive and good value for money. The whole experience was a great pleasure, a relaxed atmosphere and an interesting view. Without us knowing the cafe had filled whilst we ate and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. Would recommend to any who like good, wholesome food, beautifully presented with the minimum of fuss. Just like home cooking at a very reasonable price. Why waste your money and time going in for fine , restaurant dining when there are places like The Left Bank Cafe. The Peoples History museum is housed in the same building and is well worth the visit.
