With its appalling pun of a name and bizarre concept - serving up Halal meat in a continental deli style - Deli-Chez (shudder) is a bit of an incongruous sight in amongst the Indian takeaways, sari shops and grocers that line Roundhay Road. It certainly draws a crowd though - when I visited, at around 11am on a weekday morning, the queue was coming out of the door. Sadly, I didn't get much chance to see what all the fuss was about, as the vegetarian fillings were limited to cheese and tomato or - my choice - a soggy, soulless cheese and onion slop, but the meat options certainly looked like they were going down a treat. Served in sandwiches, paninis, toasties and jacket potatoes, the Halal fillings seemed popular with the young Asian community, no doubt attracted by the deli's modern approach, but seemed to have their fair share of western fans too. This area is a real melting pot of different cultures, and Deli-Chez does a good job of catering to this - it's just a shame they haven't factored veggies into the equation. read more
