Whilst the surroundings of the arcade may have faded during the 21 years that the cafe has been in business, the honesty and wholesome quality of the food remains consistent. I have frequented Roots and Fruits on many occasions, usually on an overcast day, accompanied with a good book. It is the perfect place to lose yourself for a couple of hours, away from the frenetic speed of the city centre. Although the decor has aged slightly, this somehow adds character to the ambiance. Their rich, flavourful soups are perfect on a gloomy day. My favourite dish from the cafe is the falafel kebab, served warm with salad, raita and pitta breads, it is absolutely delicious. After eating, I often wile away the rest of the afternoon with a Darjeeling tea and a moist slice of cake. Who says procrastination has to be dull. A well-used haunt for dedicated vegetarians and fans of meat-free cooking, long may Roots and Fruits continue.

Vegan heaven! A real health food cafe where everything tastes amazing!!…read more Been here a couple of times whilst in Leeds and absolutely love the vibe, staff are always friendly, smiley and ready to help. This time we came however we had to sit outside, the cafe as tables had been booked inside (the people who booked it were 25 mins late and they still kept the table) quite irritating for us but at least they give you ages if you're late! It wasn't IDEAL sitting outside, but actually turned out to be quite nice as loads of people were walking past in fancy dress (we visited on Halloween) so got some really interesting people watching in! The waiter came over and took our order (after we'd deliberated for ages) I had the mandarin jigger and others ordered hot drinks etc. Everything was bought quickly and efficiently, our waiter was so lovely when we took ages to decide our food too! I eventually decided on the nachos, complete with salsa, coconut sour cream (!!!!) and jalepenos! All of it was amazing and so tasty!! I definitely didn't expect the coconut sour cream (vegan of course) to taste so good but it was great! The vegan cheese on top was also great and generally really tasty while also feeling you were being (quite) healthy! After much more deliberation we chose the chocolate cheesecake (all vegan) with a desiccated coconut base- different but very delicious! I have to give this place 5 stars, its ethical, friendly and everything I aspire to in life- really makes you think twice about what you're eating and how you're eating it! A real eco hub for anyone interested in conserving our planet :) Goes without saying the napkins and loo roll etc is all recycled too :)

A Lebanese and Halal 'pop up' stall situated in the 'Upper' part of the market near the haberdashery shop and flower stall (and close to the Source) which has an array of smells and sights to strike up interest from most people who pass by. (not sure if it's to be a permanent stall). So, new year, new adventure. I went here for lunch with my friend Al who always likes to try new stuff. The staff are very encouraging, explaining what they offer and showing you how its made. There are 10/12 choices on the menu- I chose veggie, Al chose chicken. The food is prepared and cooked in front of you so you have to wait and watch. it's mainly done on a grill or the veggie stuff (mainly being falafel) is shallow fried before being 'wrapped' and warmed on a panini maker! There were dishes of olives and hummus on the counter and you could see all the ingredients that go into your order. The prices are reasonable too= £4.50 or less per wrap/kebab etc. I was happy with my falafel wrap but it was a tad lacking in the spicy punch I expected, Al like his 'kebab cake' (we couldn't remember the actual name!) It was nice to experience different cuisine in a handy way and not be so stuffed after but next time I'm gonna be brave and ask for something a bit spicier! I think this is a break off shop from the Shawarma on Raglan Road in Headingley but having never been there I couldn't be sure- they do both seem to offer similar if not the same menu!

I loved the chicken bastilla that I had in Marrakech and had hoped for the same with this one. It wasn't bad but can't say it was the best. CM usually appears very busy as its located in the Leeds market so it might take awhile to get your order in since you're not entering an actual restaurant but more of food stand. Service was good, friendly and quick. I would try it again but would opt for something different.

The proverbial vulture circling in the sky looking for its prey I eventually located and headed towards. You'd be forgiven for following suite, the outside is painted black to match the shops that surround it. This is a slight downfall from it's location and one I presume they have no control over due the nature of the area. Time to take the plunge, my caffeine levels where dropping rapidly. Upon entering you are greeted with the feeling of entering a cave, dark and sparsely lit. On your right is the coffee station, to your left are the stairs downstairs and in front a selection of eclectic seating. A warm greeting was given and after a short perusal I plumbed for my statuary cappuccino. Now normally it takes about 15 seconds for me to place an order but this never happened. My eyes kept wandering, looking at the delights and my mouth kept watering. I have a weak spot for chocolate and cakes and my knees started to tremble. Laid before was a bevvy of delights for me to try. I had to have a nibble and so I did. Just a quick nibble, a little delight, a chocolate truffle shaped piece of heaven. So I ordered my cappuccino and truffles and was asked to take a seat while my coffee was readied. Unfortunately upstairs was full to the brim so I plumbed for a seat downstairs. That was a shame, upstairs is quaint, quirky and generally original. What a difference to upstairs. Crammed between the entrance to the toilets and a small kitchen area are a few seats/tables, the highlight being an old school desk. Not the atmosphere I thought it would be. While talking to the friendly staff member while she cooked was nice it's not the type of area I really want to sit and enjoy a coffee. I think if I come back I'll make sure I get a seat upstairs. My coffee arrived after about 5 minutes along with my truffles and I sat back to do some work and enjoy my caffeine fix. I know there are people that like a drink as hot at the inside of a volcano and I know there are those that like to tip it down their throats but me, I like to sip on it over a period of 30 minutes to enjoy the full potential of the ground beans. This could not happen with this coffee. By the time 5 minutes had reached my coffee was on the verge of the next Ice Age. Not good. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine coffee, not as good as La Bottega/Laynes but damn good non the less. So in a nut shell, the coffee was good (if a little too cold), the downstairs is not good, the truffles AMAZING and the service good indeed. I will return if only to try more chocolaty delights.

There are healthier options on offer, some gorgeous salads and soups sit alongside the tempting daily specials and an endless range of sandwiches. My particular favourite is the hot Cajun Chicken and Sour Cream wrap (£1.90). It is the ideal place to pick up a tasty and unfussy lunch, without paying excessive prices. At some point back in time, folks really went all out with their architecture - a far cry from the select few cement blocks that litter our skyline. Leeds is a gorgeous city, and I'm not afraid to say it. And this is truly a gem. Often, with buildings of historic stature, the cafes and eateries attached sadly offer a lack luster cup of grey tea. (Not earl grey, just grey.) The might attempt at a few cellophane wrapped dry cakes, and of course charge double what you'd expect, but here my friends... Here, they make an effort. An effort worthy of the attractive structure. The afternoon tea was on the agenda, when I met a friend here the other week, and my those scones were generous. Huge thick cakes, obviously freshly baked, and they came with a delectably cute pot of jam and a pot of clotted cream. Butter, even. The tea was equally impressive. I ordered a Russian Caravan; a smokey dark tea, full of intrigue, and whilst it might not have suited the cake in question, it was delightful. The tea came in a loose leaf tea pot, perfect, and so this place is now on my list of loose leaf spots - something I hope catches on about Leeds. We need a dedicated tea room! The chap serving was lovely, friendly, and for two pots and two scones we treated ourselves like queens for the pauperly sum of a tenner. If you fancy an afternoon indulgence, truly, this is the perfect spot. Even better? You can wander around the gallery before or after, for absolutely nothing.
