The curry tasted similar to Japanese curry made at home with store-bought curry cubes, which I mean as a compliment. It was comforting and familiar, though there was much more sauce than carrots or potatoes, so eating it with rice is essential. The chicken katsu had a nicely crisp crust, but the meat itself--likely chicken breast--was unfortunately quite dry. The karaage, on the other hand, was delicious. The chicken, probably thigh meat, was well seasoned, juicy, and coated in a crispy, flavorful batter. I think the katsu would be much better if they used the same type of meat as the karaage. Overall, I'd come back for the karaage, but the chicken katsu curry is probably something you could make better at home.

The deep-fried pork cutlet was clean, thick, and super juicy, the curry was flavorful, the corn cheese was adored by our toddler, and wow..the Omurice..would order again! Essentially the Omurice is a Japanese omelet rice (tomato-based chicken fried rice wrapped with scrambled eggs). The sauce was sweet and also came with slices of hot dog inside. Yum! Would love to come back and try the Katsu Burger, Mapo Nasu Curry Rice, any of the Curry Doria, and Katsu Sandwich. Order straight from kiosk, grab a pager that alerts you when food is ready for pickup, and friendly/turn-key service. i was pleasantly surprised by this place. my first impression was not the greatest because the…read moreprices were pretty high like 24 per set. also you only had a choice of miso soup or rice and not both. adding a miso soup would be 4 dollars extra which was pretty absurd to me. my reasoning for this is because hako was my standard where they include both for the much lower price point. while i still think hako has infinitely better value, its also like 400 miles from this place so you cant really compare them for that. the katsu itself was great, the breading was very light and crisp and not too oily which was good. i wasnt the biggest fan of the katsu sauce tho, it was more sour and acidic and liquidy whereas im used to a sweeter thicker sauce that actually clings to the katsu when i dip it. the ika geso karaage was really good i am a sucker for squid and they season the batter well so it had some good flavor. i also think the size of the food is a little bigger than hako so maybe thats part of the reason for the higher price but not really by much. i shared two katsu sets with 4 people including myself but my sisters dont really eat that much so more like 3 people. one thing i will say that really stood out to me was the worker just had such a bubbly personality and it looked like they look forward to coming into work everyday. that was nice to see.

We entered a few minutes before peak dinner times, so there were seats to choose and sit from. By the time we left, mostly all the seats were filled up, so I would suggest coming in early. I liked the naming for each of the ramen dishes, some I recognized the names from Hawai'i. For this round, we ordered 3 different types of ramen: the Kuni, Broke da Mouth, and the Miso Hungry. These orders also came around the same time. A notable elements I liked about the ramen was that the noodles were chewy and springy, and the broth was smooth and easy to drink. I also didn't have the urge to drink lots of water either, so the seasoning was perfect. The other element was that I got to enjoy the ramen's broth and noodles as the stars of the dish, and the proteins, like the pork were supporting roles. For me, what I enjoy ramen are the broth and noodles, so I'm happy that these are prominent in the dish, rather than me having other chow down a thick slab of pork. This restaurant hit the right marks for what a delicious ramen is for me, so I'll come back, and maybe try their other broths.

One of my husband's favourites was the fish porridge. However, after a few times, they decided not to make it anymore. It's a shame cause it was their best dish even though my husband normally doesn't like porridge, he thinks they made the porridge so good that he can give it an exception! Fast forward to last week, we decided to give Kiraku a try again - dine in. I noticed that they have quite a strict policy in reservation (if we don't show up, they automatically charge a fee and we have to spend at least $50 pp like other high end restaurants which I guess it's ok because it's hard to do business nowadays). When we arrived, we were greeted and seated right away. The restaurant was very small, obviously all the tables were very small as well. There was hardly any room for the wait staff to walk/move around and my head/arm got hit a couple of times by their elbows. That was not the worst though. The place was so loud that we could not hold a conversation. I felt that my ears and my head were hurting by all the noise from people talking and the sound of the dishes clinking. However, that still was not the worst! We looked at the menu, my husband doesn't eat raw stuff (I did tell him that they have lots of cooked items). I asked the wait staff what kind of fresh sashimi they have since I have a craving. She told me they have blue fin tuna. I was so excited so I placed that order. Here comes the break down of my disappointment: 1. Blue fin tuna, turned out that they actually didn't have. So I had to choose either salmon sashimi or torched mackerel. I don't like to order salmon sashimi since most of the salmon restaurants serve is not wild caught so the farm raised salmon often tastes fishy. I decided to order the torched mackerel at the wait staff suggested. It was a big mistake....the mackerel was so fishy that I couldn't finish the whole thing. My husband ordered the chicken karaage and the snow crab with torched cabbage which were only ok, we also had the tender beef tongue skewer which was good, black cod miso which my husband said I cook that one much better, we also had jumbo squid and gyoza which were only ok. Our dessert was probably the best - the sweet potato brûlée. We have decided to scratch this restaurant off our dining list because the food was just not good enough for us to give it another try! I guess I am spoiled by the excellent Japanese food in Singapore, Japan and Australia, this place just cannot compare to any of the places we had but I am sure I can find other better Japanese restaurants in California!
