Today was the first day that Union County opened its newest library, Southwest Regional Library…read more Many of us have been waiting for an updated, modern library that will serve the needs of the residents. Without a doubt, the Director has done a phenomenal job in bringing this creation to life. First of all, this library is almost 4 times the size of the old Waxhaw library and there is plenty of parking spaces for parents, students and residents without having a long walk. When you walk in, you're warmly greeted by a large staff of friendly faces. There is a map to help you navigate where to go. Aesthetically, the library is one of the best libraries I've seen in the Charlotte area. The decor and atmosphere blend very well and even when the library is full, it still has a calmness to it. One of the first things I noticed was the huge children's book section which should more than accommodate any child's interests and reading level. As you move through the library, you'll notice they have study rooms which as first come, first served guaranteed for at least an hour. They have two stem sections, one of them has a 3D printer 3D computers and PS5. The other has smaller activities for children. There are several areas for reading, relaxation and if you want a snack or beverage, there is a small area for that as well. The adult book section is substantially larger as well with a much better variety of authors and genres whereas the old Waxhaw library was stuck in the past. When it's time to check out, you can either do self checkout at a couple locations inside or at the help desk. Overall, I'm truly impressed with our newest library and all of its offerings. The customer service is excellent and there is plenty of staff to happily assist if you need.

ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center on Seventh Street downtown to name just three. Each has specialties that make them individuals. The South Park Regional had a fair collection of books and materials for the younger set, but really excelled at games and toys for engaging kids ... they even had a little cabin the kids could go in. The library itself was newish, clean and easy to get to, with available free parking ... although it is oftentimes full. Unlike some other libraries in the district, this one had more library things for kids to play with, but fewer library materials (books and puzzles). Still and all, nice library and recommended.

This library has so much potential. It is huge, and the children's section takes up a very large…read moreportion of the downstairs. There are tons of children's books, toys, activities, and interactive areas for kids, which is wonderful. The rest of the library also looked very nice, organized, and well maintained. Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the children's area was extremely disappointing. The carpets were visibly dirty and stained in multiple places, and the entire children's section felt like it was overdue for a serious deep cleaning. I completely understand that an area used by young children gets a lot of traffic and will naturally have more wear and tear, but this seemed well beyond what I would consider normal. What made it even more surprising is that I've been to other Charlotte Mecklenburg Library locations, and I have not seen their children's areas looking like this. The difference in cleanliness was very noticeable. For a space specifically designed for babies and young children who are sitting, crawling, touching toys, and playing directly on the floor I really feel like cleanliness should be one of the highest priorities. It's especially unfortunate because the rest of this library looked very nice and well cared for. Since the children's area makes up such a large portion of the downstairs, I really hope more attention is given to routinely deep cleaning the carpets, floors, toys, and play areas. This could easily be an amazing library for families, but the condition and lack of cleanliness in the children's section made me uncomfortable letting a child play freely there.

I was genuinely surprised when I first moved to Waxhaw and saw their library for the first time. If…read moreyou're not paying attention then you'll miss it because it's a small house that has been repurposed into a library. The location is problematic because it's in a neighborhood off the main road in Waxhaw which would confuse some. When I went into the library, I noticed the lighting was poor and the selection of books and other materials was severely lacking quantity and quality. With a library this small, it's difficult to find a well known author or title by African Americans or other minorities. I'm not insinuating that this is done on purpose because I believe the county or city thinks that the demographics of Waxhaw, Marvin wouldn't be interested in these genres. I did find other books that catered more to a certain demographic of a certain political affiliation. If you're wanting a better library overall and you live in Waxhaw, I'd suggest going to the main library in Monroe. You can thank me later

I arrived at 815a on a Monday and there were already about 20 people in line. All I needed was to renew an expiring license. It started out good when the doors opened at 830a. The lady directing folks to different lines told me window 6. I told the lady very CLEARLY and I handed her my license. It's going to EXPIRE on the August 27th and I need a VISION test. She's on the keyboard typing away, the gives me some forms to complete and then administers the EYE Test. She charged me $10 bucks and I thought that was a little low. Does "Jailbreak Brewing Company" in Laurel MD count? From the National Register, where the Jail was listed in 1971, "The 1823 Lancaster County Jail is a significant example of Robert Mills architecture and reflects his innovative ideas on the proper construction of penal institutions. The jail is a stuccoed brick building of three stories with Palladian style stone quions and stringcourses. It features a gable roof, iron grates, first floor windows and doors within recessed arches, and gable parapets with coping and a raised center section. Although Mills never signed his buildings and often failed to sign his plans, a number of building characteristics and facts substantiate the 1823 jail is his design. Some characteristics of Mills' work are the following: Mills advocated free circulation of air in jail construction, and this was achieved in the Lancaster County Jail by placing barred cages for prisoners in the middle of the room; the absence of a dungeon reflects a Mills innovation in penal reform; classifying prisoners according to their crime was a Mills recommendation, and this was achieved in the Lancaster County Jail by placing prison rooms for debtors on the first floor and other cells were on the second floor; Mills was a member of the Board of Public Works for the State of South Carolina from 1820-1830, and he was referred to in public documents of that period as the 'State Engineer and Architect.'" The nearby Lancaster County Courthouse https://www.yelp.com/biz/lancaster-county-courthouse-lancaster is also worth a visit as it was also designed by Mills who is most famous as the architect of the Washington Monument.
