If you love classic street tacos, this is the place for you. In Los Angeles, we had the most…read moreawesome street tacos restaurants. Cheap, seasoned meat goodness. In Asheville, I've had to hunt these places down. A fellow Californian told me El Patron has the best tacos in town. "It's also connected to a gas station." He said, as I effused about Patty's Pupuseria (also adjacent to a gas station). El Patron is inside of a gas station. You order at the counter and a very small kitchen prepares subs, burgers, tacos, burritos, etc. Normally, I would be a little skeptical of such a place with diverse offerings, especially inside a gas station convenient store. But this place was recommended. I ordered a Pastor taco, Carne Asada and a bean and cheese pupusa. Hubby ordered a steak burrito. Well, the bad news is their pupusas suck. Mine was a crispy, greasy hocky puck that tasted of old oil on an unclean grill. Two bites and I chucked it in the trash. Now on to the good part - the tacos - WOW. Yes! The pastor was perfectly seasoned. That subtle sweet pineapple, the luscious salty goodness, with bits of fatty pork in there. The carne asada was perfect - meaty, salty, yummy taco heaven. Warm corn tortillas and meat. Just as it should be. Add some raw onions, cilantro a dab of salsa - that's all you need. Now my husband loved his HUGE steak burrito. It was ginormous! I saw lettuce, tomato and rice in it. I didn't take a bite because I was loving on my tacos. This is a place for taco and burrito lovers. Skip the pupusas.

Carne Asada Burrito is top notch. Large, filling, seasoned perfectly. Can't miss and the service…read moreis quick and reliable.

Great little place it's a little hard to find but well worth the effort. We had the chicken…read moretamales/ el pastor and steak tacos all were delicious. I really enjoyed the el pastor. My GF loved the tamale. So good we for got to take pictures. Very friendly lady at the counter who told us all about the food. Next time we are in the area we will be back. Thanks Yelp.

On a recent trip to Smiley's flea market my friend and I found this gem. Unlike some of the other…read moretaco places at Smiley's, Taqueria Los Gallos doesn't have an exterior presence. It is located on the corner of the indoor market. The market's walkway literally transects the dining room. What Los Gallos lacks in ambiance it more than makes up for in authentic kick ass tacos and tamales. My friend and I visited Los Gallos after we succesfuly located a copy of the 2005 remake of War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise. This was victory food. We ordered two al pastor tacos and a tamale. The tacos were on point, double wrapped corn tortillas, and a solid helping of delicious pork. No frills, just solidly well prepared pork, onions, and cilantro. The tortillas were warm and tender. The tacos were good, but the tamale was GREAT. We missed out on the verde chicken tamale, as they had sold out by noon. We were happy to settle for the pork rojo one, which was still available. Los Gallos' tamale was bigger than most, and it was moist and airy. Dense dry tamales can take a hike, this thing was a golden brick of maize. The pork within was nice chunks of slow cooked meat, not some sort of macerated filling... oh man, I can't get over how awesome this tamale was. The best part? Tamales are $1.50. I think everyone loves finding a new spot, a hidden gem that offers an out of this world food item, and Los Gallos is just that spot! Furthermore I have to mention their avocado salsa which is neon green, and the most delicious salsa I think I've ever had. I know I get excited about things regularly... but Los Gallos... Los Gallos is worth driving to Fletcher for. Word of caution, Los Gallos is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am til 3 pm. This gives you a very small window of time to check this land of wonder out.
