A few hours later I go out just to test it again and sure enough the key won't turn in the ignition. I tried all of the different hacks I found on YouTube and nothing. I go to the dealership (stupid me) and they're talking over $1600 for an ignition switch alone! I called a few other locksmith places, and everyone wanted to just gouge me. I stumbled on Liberty via Yelp. When I called, they gave me a price and said they could be there the same day. The tech was at my house within two hours of my call, he said it might take him an hour or an hour and a half. He was done in less than 50 mins. So, this is what I got: Steering column disassembled and repaired with a NEW key for $373.19 all in. He told me he could give me a deal and make a 2nd key on the spot for $100, or I could go back to the shop at any time, and they'll charge me $150. Considering all of the crazy pricing I got from other places, the price Liberty charged me, how fast they got there and fixed the problem - was all well worth it. The first red flag was that the website clearly says 15% off your first lockout while those on the phone tried to convince me that it's only 5%. The representative I was assigned was completely unprofessional. He didn't let me know that it wasn't guaranteed I would get in and tried two ways to open the door. He only said that the third way would cause damage to the door. I am renting so obviously, this was not possible. After I paid a ridiculous amount of money for NOT getting into my apartment, I ended up making a trip to grab my spare key. Once I returned, I found the door was jammed and not even my spare key could open it. Clearly, the door was damaged by the locksmith and when I had a maintenance team help me, we found that the box strike plate was completely dented. In addition, a lot of paint was chipped off the door, and there's now a gap even when the door is fully closed. So, I paid an astronomical price for having my door damaged, which my building had to fix themselves, in addition to not having my problem resolved. The receipt states that I paid on the basis of being fully satisfied with the service which is evidently NOT the case. Avoid to salvage your bank account and your mental health.

Since he wasn't wearing a mask, I went outside to wait. When he came out of the back after several minutes (which I guess was for show), he quoted me a price of $45 for a single key because, he said, it was a safe deposit key. When I tried to ask why it was so expensive and whether that was an industry standard, he became defensive and said, "That's what I charge.", handing me back the key. I went to 2 other places. One was $15. Another was $7.50. I got it made for $7.50 at Brothers Lock and Safe, in Edison, an 84% discount from the Firstline price. Draw your own conclusions. I was wearing my BLM mask and t-shirt. Maybe that had something to do with the price and demeanor.
