Visited Nunn Better Farms for cherry picking and honestly left disappointed. At first, we were…read morepicking cherries from an area that looked very dry and poorly maintained. Later on, we found out that section was already out of season. As we walked farther, we finally saw much better cherries, but most of the good ones were way too high to reach and there were no ladders available. There were some lower branches, but the cherries there were not great in quality, so we ended up picking only around 3 lbs. We then decided to switch to the peach and nectarine area hoping for a better experience, but unfortunately there was barely anything good to pick. Most of the fruits were either overripe, damaged, or already picked over. Overall, it felt like the farm should have better guidance on which sections are still worth visiting before customers pay and spend time walking around in the heat. The staff was fine, but the overall fruit quality and picking experience were disappointing for us this visit.

My daughter and I found what looked to be an unpicked cherry tree and went to work. It didn't take long for us to gather a bounty of cherries, and there was tons of low hanging fruit that was super easy for a petite seven-year-old to reach. Special thanks to the Freitas staff member who told us to pick dark cherries. The bright red ones look appealing but they need more time on the tree! We took home seven pounds of cherries. They were $4/pound and they take cash or credit cards. I checked their website before heading here (and recommend you do too!). We'll definitely be back to Freitas.

There was no signage indicating price/pound, and they give you a plastic bag to carry your cherries. When we got into the orchard, we noticed that most of the trees had been either picked clean or had berries that were rotten or too small/not ripe yet. We intentionally walked much further in to see if we could find some trees that hadn't been picked as much, but the orchard wasn't in great shape. We struggled to find cherries we actually wanted to pick, and we tripped a few times on the uneven dirt, weeds, and tubes running throughout. When we left, we weighed our cherries and confirmed they were $4/lb. Freitas also doesn't take credit card, so we had to pay with either cash or Venmo. We've previously been to The Cherry Pit and far preferred our experience there. The Cherry Pit had parking closer to the entrance, clear signage indicating price/lb, lots of high quality trees and ample cherries to pick, and accepts credit cards. The Cherry Pit also didn't ask us to sign a waiver before entering.

I have a lot of great memories from these Memorial weekend outings with extended family way back in the days. For years I've been bringing my kids to the orchards and continuing the tradition. Even during the pandemic we made our way out to Brentwood. The G & S staff is consistently friendly. We love supporting G & S Farms. Today we arrived early and picked some Brooks and Corals. Lots of plump cherries from all the rain. Don't forget to sign the safety waiver form. Available online or scan QR Code at the counter. 2023: $4.00/ pound. *Updated with correct pricing*

G&S farms have reservations available through their website. Perhaps to prevent overcrowding. I don't know if there's any difference between walk-ins and people with reservations, but for every ticket you purchase, you get your first lb of cherries free. Each lb of cherries costs $3.50. The parking entrance for parties with reservations is kind of easy to miss. They have a sign that says cherry picking is available, and people with reservations have their own parking lot, but because there is a lot of farms around, without a clear "G&S Farms" sign, it's hard to tell them apart. It would be better if they have signs right at the lot entrance. When we got into the lot, there were quite a lot of people. The front lot was nearly full, but thankfully we found a spot close to the entrance. There's a designated table for you to check in first. They provide bags for the cherries and they have a sign that shows you the cherry varieties available for picking. The varieties are color coded by the color shown on the tree trunks. The employees at the table will also let you know which row they suggest you start picking from. Note: Make sure you have your QR code from your receipt loaded and ready for when you're done cherry picking because that'll be your discount ticket. Although there's a lot of people, because the farm was huge, there's plenty of social distancing. We didn't come across that many people while picking cherries, and if we did, they were wearing their masks. My family had so much fun cherry picking. There was a lot of tree climbing involved, and we came out with four heavy bags of cherries. We even got to take a glimpse of a nest, which was really cool! I only came across two spots where you can pay for your cherries after you're done. There was the one at the front entrance (same table where you check in) and a table at the side of the farm. With the QR code shown on your receipt, you'll get your first lb of cherries free. All in all, if you're looking for a fun and safe outdoor activity during the pandemic, and you don't mind getting your clothes dirty, this may be just the activity to try out.
