The chili is not too spicy and has a lot of flavor. We ordered a nice spread- son had two plain medium dogs, Wifey had one medium with chili and one medium with mustard and kraut, and I had a jumbo with chili and slaw and a medium with chili and cheese. We also ordered a side of fried and a side of rings. LOVE that they have RC Cola as a fountain drink here. Service was fast and friendly and they bring the food to your table. I love the feel of the place-nothing fancy, but it's got a friendly feel. This place is also always very clean. The dogs and sides were very good. My chili and slaw dog was great and the onion rings were fantastic. If you don't like your dogs fried this place might not be for you, but I love them. I know this might sound like blasphemy to you Jersey hot dog lovers, but I think Jersey Johnny's has moved ahead of Rutt's Hut for me...not my favorite, but certainly up there.

I went back a few days after my first visit because they were THAT good. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Wayne Mills. We had a lovely conversation about how he opened Lover Dogs and how Lover Dogs has been his dream retirement. On the walls, there are photos of his brother Gene who was a renowned wrestler in the 80s. Wayne gave me a tour of the outdoor patio and the downstairs area that he plans to expand for breakfast/brunch. The patio area overlooks a nice view of the Passaic River. After the little tour, I ate my all the way hot dog. Lover Dogs hot dogs are air-fried which I thought was very unique. The chilli sauce is out of this world. Super flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Wayne explained that he spent a long time perfecting the recipe and worked with several people to develop. The hot dogs are Hoffman brand which he discovered when he visited his brother many years ago at Syracuse University. It was really nice to see Wayne pay homage to the previous building owners with a framed collage on the wall. I am a local history nerd so I really loved seeing all of the old photos dating back to the early 1900s. Please visit this awesome local business!

I also had a Snap-O-Razzo brand dog with chili, mustard, and kraut. We also shared fries, onion rings and the owner let us try his mozzarella sticks. I thought the Cruz-Missile would be a bit sloppy, but it was the perfect amount of toppings and as good as the toppings were, they didn't overwhelm the flavor of the dog. This was my first time tasting the Snap-O-Razzo dog and it was a home run. The flavor of the dog just popped and it's really delicious-unlike any other hot dog I've ever tasted. The fries, rings and mozzarella sticks were also delicious. Owner actually brought us out a second round of onion rings because the first ones weren't his hand battered rings and he wanted us to taste the real thing. Owner is a former police officer and the decor around the place is very first-responder friendly. We spoke with him at length about opening the place, why he uses the dogs and ingredients he uses, and some of the issues he's had. It was a great experience. Came here in the recommendation of a hot dog junkie to give these guys a try. We came at lunchtime…read more(a bit of a drive for us) and parked behind the building. I could see how parking might be tough during a busy lunchtime, but we lucked out. I ordered a BLVD Ripper (foot long Windmill Dog) with chili, cheese and kraut and one of the Thumann's deep fried with kraut chili and mustard. Also shared some tots with my lunchmates. The shop itself is nice and set up for both sit-down and take out. Guy behind the counter, who I assumed was the owner, was super friendly and seemed pretty enthusiastic about his place. My take...I thought the dogs were done perfectly and the chili and kraut were delicious. I would have preferred a little more cheese on the ripper as the flavor got buried. The hot dog buns were just ok...they didn't hold up to contain the toppings, which was a little disappointing. Tots were great. My two lunchmates gave a mixed review...one loved his two dogs and the other liked the dogs, but was just so-so in the toppings and the buns. You can't please everyone I guess. Overall I had a great lunch, but it's pretty far out of our way to become a regular lunch spot for us. That said, if in the area, I would definitely stop in again!
