I have been hearing about Lover Dogs for quite some time and I visited recently for the first time…read more These hot dogs surprised me and I can honestly say that they might well be the best all the way hot dogs in the area. I went back a few days after my first visit because they were THAT good. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Wayne Mills. We had a lovely conversation about how he opened Lover Dogs and how Lover Dogs has been his dream retirement. On the walls, there are photos of his brother Gene who was a renowned wrestler in the 80s. Wayne gave me a tour of the outdoor patio and the downstairs area that he plans to expand for breakfast/brunch. The patio area overlooks a nice view of the Passaic River. After the little tour, I ate my all the way hot dog. Lover Dogs hot dogs are air-fried which I thought was very unique. The chilli sauce is out of this world. Super flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Wayne explained that he spent a long time perfecting the recipe and worked with several people to develop. The hot dogs are Hoffman brand which he discovered when he visited his brother many years ago at Syracuse University. It was really nice to see Wayne pay homage to the previous building owners with a framed collage on the wall. I am a local history nerd so I really loved seeing all of the old photos dating back to the early 1900s. Please visit this awesome local business!

Now, if you are going to charge $10. for that your should give top service. My sauerkraut was cold and no onions. The adult workers draped over the counters like they were drug addicts overdosing. At least Hank's Franks says please thank you and no laughing and fooling around like a High School period break.

It's a deep fried dog. I get mine "all the way" which is with mustard, their chili topping and diced onions. I also got an order of fries with gravy. The hot dog is good quality and the sauce isn't bad. A little sweet for my taste. Why only 3 starts vs 5? I got this during my lunch break and ate this at my work. Zero utensils for the fries with gravy and zero napkins. Am I splitting hairs? Possibly, but trying to type while having fingers slopped with gravy is kind of a put off. Then add the messiness of the dog, which is a good thing, sauce tends to find its way on your face, table, etc. Solid food. You can eat in. A big variety of items and priced reasonably.

So instead of my traditional trip to a 100-year old place a few miles away, we came here. First, the place is clean and seating is plentiful. The counter service is efficient and the dude was polite. I really like that birch beer was a fountain option. (We don't get that in Texas.) Now to the food... This place uses Thumann's hot dogs, which are among the best in the free world. (Vienna Beef is better, but that's about it.) Not sure who supplies the buns, but they are average. They hold up well with toppings, which is very important, but they didn't otherwise add any qualities. I bought three dogs here, and they were all better than average. The slaw dog included cold, crispy cabbage that would make my Southern relatives proud. Other than the wonderful consistency, however, there was nothing really special about this. The mayo base was good, but had no flavor depth. As a hot dog topping, it worked. Even as a dish at a family reunion, it would likely work. Still, I've had tastier slaw dogs. The kraut dog was standard and delicious. Wonderful toppings. The chili cheese was outstanding, Nice spice and gooey American cheese, Way to go! Bottom line: These are decent hot dogs. Mine were fried almost crunchy, and the non-steamed bun did nothing to tone anything down or soften the hot dog. The fries, by the way, are served hot and crispy and made a wonderful accompaniment. If I lived here, this place would be a regular stop for hot dogs -- only if I didn't feel like driving an extra five minutes to Johnny & Hanges.

No worries here, Cruz-Missle Hot Dogs was fantastic. Came here with two work buddies and we were a little early so we had the place to ourselves (though a few people came in while we were there for to-go lunches). I love Thumann's dogs so I had the Cruz-Missile specialty dog with a Thumann's. Came with hot chili, spicy cooked onions, spicy mustard and pickled jalapeños. I also had a Snap-O-Razzo brand dog with chili, mustard, and kraut. We also shared fries, onion rings and the owner let us try his mozzarella sticks. I thought the Cruz-Missile would be a bit sloppy, but it was the perfect amount of toppings and as good as the toppings were, they didn't overwhelm the flavor of the dog. This was my first time tasting the Snap-O-Razzo dog and it was a home run. The flavor of the dog just popped and it's really delicious-unlike any other hot dog I've ever tasted. The fries, rings and mozzarella sticks were also delicious. Owner actually brought us out a second round of onion rings because the first ones weren't his hand battered rings and he wanted us to taste the real thing. Owner is a former police officer and the decor around the place is very first-responder friendly. We spoke with him at length about opening the place, why he uses the dogs and ingredients he uses, and some of the issues he's had. It was a great experience. I've eaten a LOT of dogs in a LOT of places in Jersey and while I'm not gonna put them at the top of my personal Top Hot Dogs list, in my opinion...it's in my top five...another trip is needed to perhaps move it up slightly.

I already knew was about to be in for a treat! And the iconic hot dogs were out of this world! Each of their toppings are freshly made in-house. You can choose Sabrett or Thumann's and it's your call if you want them prepared in dirty water, grilled, or deep fried. Regardless of which ever dog you choose, you won't be disappointed! Aside from a cool old fashioned all-American glizzy, I also doubled my desire with a double smash burger. The freshly made sirloin patty melted right in my mouth! I could see how parking might be tough during a busy lunchtime, but we lucked out. I ordered a BLVD Ripper (foot long Windmill Dog) with chili, cheese and kraut and one of the Thumann's deep fried with kraut chili and mustard. Also shared some tots with my lunchmates. The shop itself is nice and set up for both sit-down and take out. Guy behind the counter, who I assumed was the owner, was super friendly and seemed pretty enthusiastic about his place. My take...I thought the dogs were done perfectly and the chili and kraut were delicious. I would have preferred a little more cheese on the ripper as the flavor got buried. The hot dog buns were just ok...they didn't hold up to contain the toppings, which was a little disappointing. Tots were great. My two lunchmates gave a mixed review...one loved his two dogs and the other liked the dogs, but was just so-so in the toppings and the buns. You can't please everyone I guess. Overall I had a great lunch, but it's pretty far out of our way to become a regular lunch spot for us. That said, if in the area, I would definitely stop in again!

Now you're in Little Falls (maybe the first time in your life?) and hungry (that happens multiple times a day). Lo and behold: just a hop, skip and a jump for the train station... a little rig that has a glow to it, luring you towards it. Inside is a young wizard - all smiles, impervious to the summer heat - that's whipping up some seriously delectable tube steaks that could give some of the old guards a run for their money. The chili was honest-to-goodness delicious. The onions were slamming. They were banging. They were (insert whatever the hip lingo kids are saying nowadays here). Added bonus: C&C Cola! Basing how good it was on day 1, Jay definitely has a lot of days ahead of him. This place is conveniently located next to the Little Falls Train Station. It's great spot for a pre or post train ride bite to eat. Trains make me hungry. Any way, I had 3 dogs. One with ketchup because I'm a little kid, one with mustard and that hot dog onion sauce business, and one with mustard chili and cheese. HOLY MOLY!!!! The hot dogs are Sabrett so already you know it's top of the line. The onions had a beautiful flavor profile that was glorious to put in my mouth. It also had a little zip to it. All and all the onions and mustard combination was outstanding. The chili and cheese dog was also amazing. The chili tasted home made and fresh. You wouldn't mind eating a bowl of it on a cold winter's afternoon watching the Packers lose after you just shoveled out your car. It was so good I'm thinking about just getting my paycheck direct deposited to Hot Dog Jay's. And the cheese sauce...you could put that on anything and make it fantastic. Now, when you go to a hotdog truck you have to get a nice cold can of pop. Jay carries the best #1 brand of hotdog truck pop, C&C. I haven't had a C&C in an age and it was magical. Washing down the dogs with that glorious soda was the perfect topper to the best lunch I've had in forever. And if a couple of good dogs isn't enough, Jay goes above and beyond. As he began to wrap my dogs, I told him not to go over board because I was going to slam them in my face right there. He told me he wraps them because it gives the buns a quick steam. I never thought of it, but holy crap did it make a world of difference. All and all this stop for a couple dogs was fair above what I was expected. Sure just about all hotdog truck dogs are good, but these...these were next level. And I don't want to disappoint you, fair reader, if it doesn't look like anything special. They don't. They're hotdog truck hotdogs. But when you eat them and notice the subtle things, it really pushes it over the edge. I give these a 10/10 for a hotdog truck and will definitely be back next time the crave hits.
