Wife and I got a Victorian we absolutely Love last year, but the windows were one of the few less than ideal situations in our new home. When the setting sun hit the living room at days end we would avoid being in there because it would stew pretty hot, and in the cool of the morning we had to have our hoodies on as that same room was frigid-basically the weather outside was what it felt like inside. Our preexisting windows were all some janky aluminum jobies from some long time ago. We found Wooden Works just searching our area for a windows shop, and let me tell you- we wound up getting 10 exceptionally crafted new wooden windows installed and now the entire house has its own temperature- we got really really good, really fast, and for what we got the price was much better than decent- a great deal... They worked with us through the entire process and with their input we chose to get hoppers that open at the top, screens on every window, and security glass where they are accessible from stairs. We got Cadillac service at Mazda price, and they cheerfully spent time and energy guiding us. Our new windows were hand built in their little shop in West Oakland where they invited us to view their progress every few weeks, and let me tell you we opted for a natural finish with stain, and our windows look like milk chocolate or espresso- deep lustrous brown that seems to keep going at second glance. Each of our windows is double paned with argon gas layer to maintain environment temperature, and with a few exceptions we were able to have our windows built with hoppers at the top which we can open to let air in and cool things down as needs be. These guys were very timely and each stage of the build was completed well before their stated timeline. Everyone we dealt with in the office were friendly, pleasant, and attentive to our issues and concerns. At no time did we ever feel "Handled;" they seemed genuinely happy getting us what we wanted and needed. As they were working several other bids we requested came in and they were all hundreds over what WW charged us. For what we paid we got GREAT value, and the icing on the cake is that everyone involved was so personable we would've happily paid more and been grateful... The carriage-style wooden doors on my mother's house finally wore out after 100 years. Being a serious hobbyist woodworker, I spent months building her a pair of solid-wood, custom, replacement doors. When it came time to install them, the DIY part of me was tempted to try installing them myself, but these things weighed 170lbs each so I was worried about wrangling such heavy doors while screwing in the hinges. I decided to hire professionals (best decision ever). I was referred to Alberto and Esteban by a local company that makes custom doors/windows. Alberto replied quickly, provided a competitive bid, and gave me valuable advice about the best hinges for the job. As others have mentioned he and Esteban showed up early on the day of installation. Watching them work, their experience and knowledge was evident in everything they did. They had all of the right tools to replace some of the wood in the door jamb that had dry rot and they knew which parts of the doors needed just a fraction of adjustment in order to fit and operate perfectly. They finished in half a day and the result is beyond perfect. For someone who obsessed about millimeter accuracy while building these doors, their installation met and exceeded all of my expectations. In true craftsman fashion, Murph is meticulous about his work. One reviewer commented on how Murph's recommendation for an expensive painter caught them off guard after having shelled out money for their windows, and I can see how this might be an unexpected additional expense, but I truly cannot imagine risking a basic paint job over these gorgeous windows. Murph is extremely thoughtful in who he works with, providing a list of companies he recommends from the get-go. The painters we had come after even commented on their regular partnership with Murph and the quality of his work.
