The restaurant is open and bright with soft colours, the atmosphere is pleasant. Full table service is provided by the friendly staff and you are able to dine indoors or alfresco. My favourite dish is the Cheese Saganaki, a delicate slice of grilled haloumi cheese which is served with fresh tzatziki dip, warm pita bread and a fresh garden salad. I love the squeak of the haloumi cheese and the added tang from a drizzle of lemon juice. The prices are very reasonable and you can pay cash or card. If you are heading to Vageli's for breakfast on the weekend it is best to book ahead - they are famous for the breakfast menu and have won the 'Best Breakfast Restaurant in Brisbane Award' four years running!

Finding a saucer of tomato sauce on my plate is a not-so-nice surprise and instantly rings alarm bells; if it needs sauce then the ingredients mustn't carry enough flavour within themselves. Also, I'm not so much of a fan of a full breakfast which looks and tastes like something anyone can make at home. Sadly, this is what I found at Vagelis. We ordered two "Mini Breakfasts" ($7.95 each) which came with a slice of thick buttered white toast, one grilled tomato, two rashers of bacon, a fried egg, chipolata sausage pierced onto the egg with a toothpick and a single piece of lettuce as garnish. Oh and the tomato sauce, of course. Not having a choice of how I wanted my egg done irked me somewhat, but it was still nice and runny, so I was content. Don't get me wrong - it was a tasty meal, and a cheap one at that, it just didn't 'wow' me.

With these being COVID times we crossed our fingers and checked the menu...the share board for 2 was off the cards, but we were intrigued by the Express Plate and both ordered one. With poached eggs, bacon, the best halloumi we've ever had, greens (broccoli & Brussel sprouts), relish and toast it was the perfect size. As there was no cream available I had a doppio and then tried a macadamia milk long black because you can never have too much Campos coffee..

To be totally up front, it wasn't as exciting as it sounded on the menu. Harissa is a Tunisian hot chili pepper paste, but my palate didn't experience any type of heat from the dish at all. The flavours of my dish were cohesive but for $17 & the amount given, & for my $7.50 'Mean & Green' juice that dominantly just tasted like apple juice (when it was supposed to have other combined flavours of spinach, cucumber, celery & mint), I felt sort of unsatiated :( I still give 3 stars because it wasn't horrible. Our food was still good & the staff & place overall was still very nice. I know I'd still love to come again & try everything else off the menu :)

The food there is of top quality and the service is great. One thing I remarked was the quality and time efficiency of the kitchen... We barely waited at all for any of our entrees or mains, leaving me speechless as the food was brought out hot and fresh in a super short period of time. I think we waited about 5 mins for entrees and maybe 15-20 for mains including some of our entree eating time...it was just crazy fast the service. Really top quality. The cajun burger was delicious with the bread being super duper fresh. The only mini complaint I'd have is a different or stronger sauce on the burger. You can't really taste it so personally, I feel if there was something on there a bit stronger which worked well with the flavours that would really top off the burger :) The chips there are to die for too - you have to try them. My sister had the Wagau burger which was also super good and mum had the prawn curry which she devoured. You can't complain about much and you really should drop by here one day for breakfast or lunch (they don't do dinner). The staff were super friendly and helpful, the service was spectacular and the food was fresh and divine. It took me a bit by surprise as it's a "cafe" but really it's both a restaurant and cafe. It seems pretty popular but they cater for this very well with additional staff. They also do functions often on the weekends if you're looking for a function venue. It's situated right on the water too so it creates a beautiful ambiance and great view. Quite relaxing really! Drop by here! It's definitely worth your time and money!

The setting is very nice with a bamboo lined wooden deck that is reasonably well shielded from Oxford street. Service was prompt and friendly. Coffee came out lightning fast. With a group of five we ordered from across the menu, as you can see in the photos. I ordered the Riverbend brekkie; at $20 the most expensive on the menu, but it was not stellar. The sausage was great however and almost worth the entire plate. Reviews on the Avo (beautifully presented on nice sourdough - see pics) were good, but the cheese was a bit bland. I didn't get any reports on the shroom on sourdough and on the croque madame, the latter of which looked quite good and was conquered in record time. Overall, a very nice place with friendly staff, but not Wow. I wouldn't hesitate to go back at all, but with so many great options around I won't go out of my way: 3 stars.

Surprisingly, it actually has a touch of exoticness because of the bamboo, but it's equally matched with a quaint bookshop to counteract that. The meal I got was a little on the bijou side of things for the price I paid, but I think that comes with the territory on Oxford Street. That doesn't seem to deter anyone though because it's always very busy with people passing through. Their website has a great little news section so you can keep up to date with all its latest happenings. Stop in at this little landmark for breakfast or lunch and take a look through their bookshop while you're at it. The teahouse is open until 5pm, 7 days a week but the bookshop has differing times.
