Bigelow Preserve is an absolutely gorgeous state-owned nature preserve in Western Maine…read more Established in 1976, this protected land is open to the public for hiking, camping, boating, fishing, fall foliage, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and so much more! At over 36,000 acres... you're sure to find something of interest. The flora and fauna are just breath-taking and it is absolutely worth a visit! I visited this vast parcel of land with the intent of climbing four out of the seven peaks of the Bigelow Mountain Range that are contained within the preserve. As some of the tallest mountains in all of Maine, I was excited for the challenge. The mountains are named after Major Timothy Bigelow who summitted the peaks in the late 1700s. There are many trails, including the famous Appalachian Trail, that snake through this forested playground. The Maine Appalachian Trail Club maintains these tracks and provides caretakers at the backcountry camping sites. From the mountains there are impressive views of Flagstaff Lake and the mountain range itself. Open all year round. One of the most scenic hikes I've completed in a while! Breath in the fresh air and get outside.

It's like a smaller, more intimate, more highly concentrated version of everything you love about Sebago and Rangeley. Clear, clean, cold water to swim in; surrounding mountains (like Mt Blue) that ring Webb Lake making it picturesque in every way. There's also some low stakes hiking, including a 1-mile loop (apparently called Hopping Frog Nature Trail) near the Nature Center. The Nature Center is also very cool, offering hands-on exhibits, interpretive programs, and displays about the local flora and fauna. I learned how big my wingspan is and played a round of outdoor checkers. I was extremely delighted by this spot and can't wait to explore it again in the future!

Motel was booked solid so I went with a campsite this time around and I am so glad I did. Check-in was again a breeze and the staff are just so nice. Having inquired as to my activities in the area, they remembered the details and brought in up in conversation whenever we ran into each other. A nice personal touch. I stayed at campsite #9 "Double Decker" and it was the perfect size for my medium sized tent and large SUV. It came with a fire pit and picnic table. When you first round the bend, the campsites seem squeezed in there but the site itself felt pretty private once I settled in and I was not bothered by the full campground surrounding me. Quiet hours by 10pm made getting rest for my weekend activities easy peasy. As a solo camper, I felt very safe here. The nearby lounge area had a television, kitchen w. oven, range, refrigerator, and freezer, television, electrical outlets, games and more. Toilets and coin-operated showers were on the backside of this building. I don't mind pay showers but wished I got a little bit more time for my first four quarters as I was scrambling to put more in as I rushed through each visit. Bring plenty with you if you like to take your time. Firewood available for purchase (delivered to your campsite!) along with some other staples. Would absolutely stay here again. And again. And again.

First impression was great!! Cozy good sized rooms for great prices!! Full kitchen in our room! Bathroom was nice and we had two queen beds!! TV and cable and a beautiful deck. Close to Sugarloaf! Place was so adorable and comfy that my fiance proposed to me here!! Made it even more special. The family that owns it are very sweet and were happy we stayed and congratulated us! :) Can't wait to stay here on our anniversary! :)

I visited Phil's, for the first time, in May. Stayed for a couple days to do a check out hike for…read moremy upcoming trip through the 100MW. On that trip I was the only guest. Phil gave me a tour of his place and provided some valuable tips. Coffee was ready in the morning - I appreciated the company (from both Phil and Woody). Used the grill that evening and spent time reading in the "community center". I felt totally at home and had a chance to destress from life. My sister and I returned at the end of June for our hike. Cabin was ready when we arrived. Phil was as engaging as ever. He dropped us at Abol Bridge in the morning. Unfortunately my sister fell and tore her ACL on the hike. Phil provided instructions for how to get her out and even, personally hiked in to look for us. After she got off trail, he helped me plan a two day solo hike. Really awesome place! I now think of Phil as a friend. I'd highly recommend.

My friend and I used Phil for our section hike of the 100 mile wilderness. Phil was wonderful to…read moreus. He gave us so much useful information about the trail, campsites and a resupply. The food drop was essential so we didn't have to carry 8 days worth of food. I can't thank him enough for making us feel so safe and secure. He sat down with us and went over our maps and made sure we didn't have any questions. He dropped us off at the trailhead. When we finished a day early he made sure we got picked up and we didn't have to wait long. His rates are very reasonable and he really went above and beyond for us. His cabins were so clean and comfortable. The shower was clean and had hot water. There is hardly any cell service in the 100 mile wilderness so using my Inreach was critical to staying in touch with him when we finished. He was also nice enough to text my husband with an update when my device wasn't working well. When we finished he offered us both use his personal phone to call our families which was a really nice gesture. I highly recommend Phil Pepin and his services. This stretch if trail is very remote and difficult. He knows the ins and outs of the area and that was very comforting to us!! Thanks Phil!!!!

I usually do not like to be so close to the bathrooms but it was a great location. There is a huge grassy area behind the camp spot which made it feel so much bigger!
