My family of 22 booked almost $1000 at the Bethel outdoor adventures in campground for a day of tubing down the river. We were greeted with a long snarl of a face in the main office and while still on the river with multiple family, waiting for us to get off the river, they were yelled at and mistreated by Erin. And when I got off, I went to retrieve my keys to leave, and I was treated as if I was a moron when I tried to explain that I just had given her a fob, not a full set of keys. She treated me like I was a two year-old idiot and was very sassy with me and again with her long snarl of a face. This is not how Customers should ever be treated and you should not be the face of this company. I highly recommend another tubing company if you visit Bethel Maine

I was unfortunate and got stuck in the soft base and needed a wrecker to get me out. Mike and his team were instrumental in getting me out, from first trying with his own truck, moving rocks that were in the way and finally calling a wrecker service in town to get me out! THANKS, Mike! I definitely recommend this park.

Both visits, I camped out in a tent the night before hiking in Grafton Notch - $28 for a tent site pretty close to the trailhead? Not bad! The $28 includes free mini golf, use of their pool, and a rustic camping experience. Wins: - The owners are super friendly. Very genuine people. They have helped me last-minute book both times and are patient and great. - They recently added a little dining area to their general store, which is great! When I camped here a few weeks ago, I ordered their mozzarella sticks, a beer, and a pizza (what can I say, I was carbo-loading) and it was super affordable. - Their store has beer. Lots of it. And donuts. So, essentially all you need before hiking a four thousander. - Their pool is amazing. Though I was SO SAD to be informed that we arrived literally the day it closed for the season. I wish that had been communicated better. - Fire pits - they give guests the freedom to have fun and safe fires - love this. - Flushing toilets/running water to brush teeth/wash hands. This is a luxury for us camping regulars! - Quiet, peaceful, beautiful Maine. Ehs: - The campsites are pretty close together - there's very little privacy in terms of trees separating the sites. We were lucky to go near the end of the season and be essentially alone and isolated in our spot. - I wish the general store was open just a teeny bit later! This lazya** needs her water bottles and beer after 8pm usually, especially after driving out to the site all evening. Their breakfast sandwiches are affordable and a delicious meal for before a hike - be sure to grab one. This is a real Maine experience. It's so fun to watch the sun set over the mountain you're going to be summiting the next day, and Stony Brook gives you that view!

The drive to it along ME 26 was beautiful, despite the intense and brutal heat on the day of our first visit. There are roadside turnouts for both Mother Walker Falls and Screw Auger Falls; the water flow at the falls was markedly curtailed due to the current drought conditions. You'll find signage that explains this area's glacial and geologic history. The trails leading to the waterfalls are short and well-marked, with uneven rock and forest flooring. Tip: Apparently Screw Auger Falls is so named because it looks as like someone took a giant auger and drilled large quantities of rock out of this quite sizable granite rock formation formation Tip: Dogs are allowed here for no additional fee. They're permitted throughout the park and on the trails; but not on the beaches I totally enjoyed everything I saw here on my first visit, and have already gone back a week ago. I expect to make visiting this very special destination a regular habit :-)

And, I don't know, you don't forget that do you? Screw Auger Falls - Anytime I get the chance to play on rocks and waterfalls, I'm going to! The Bear River has areas of expansive smooth rocks that may or may not be accessible (depends on how much water is flowing). On one side, there's a tinier waterfall; the other side, the gorge where Screw Auger spills down. The rocks here are so interestingly carved and worn because of the years and years (and years) of water washing over them. Mother Walker Falls Turnout - I think this is where The Abandoned Road is, an interesting stone stairway, a wee cave, and some information about "this section of Bear River in the deep gorge below is called Mother Walker Falls. Roaring over broken rocks and falling into little pools, the river gradually drops a total of 98 feet." You can't see much because of the density of the trees. Moose Cave - This is a 1/4 mile loop of mostly packed surface, stairs, some boardwalks and planks, and a few steep drop-offs. There's a reindeer moss garden before Moose Cave which was formed when a great slab of granite broke away from the mountainside. Supposedly at some point an unlucky moose got trapped here. Eyebrow Trail/Table Rock - So now we get to some hiking. I did some research that suggested Table Rock (2380°, 2.4 miles; specifically going orange to blue to white [AT]) was slightly easier than Eyebrow (2600°, 2.1 miles; specifically going orange to white [AT]). Either way, you get to spend some time on the AT, and some folks are here just to step foot, snap a photo, and move on. We decided to do Eyebrow Trail and it was one of the toughest hikes I've ever been on in the best way possible; it ignited a passion in me I didn't know I had! There were areas where you had to scale the mountainside with an iron cable bolted into the ground; other areas where you had to climb vertically on a rock surface via an iron ladder. The summit's views reminded me of areas of the Highlands in Scotland; and, I don't know that I've ever smelled pine so raw and cold and crisp before. I will never forget this hike; maybe sometime I can come back and do Old Speck (4180°)! Spruce Meadow Turnout - We stopped here to have lunch. If you walk a little further then where most of the picnic tables are, there's a lone table facing an expanse of stunning mountain. It's a good place to have a good meal with a good friend. Scenic Turnout - There's not much that here, a trio of signs/placards that talk about the area. What a beautiful Maine spot this is!

It says that they have tent sites and I guess they do, though there is not much space at most. It is set up very well for ATVs and RVs with water and electric at most sites. They have some lean to sites as well and this is where our story goes a bit weary. We booked months ago for a lean to site along the pristine swift river in Byron. A week before we knew bad weather was to come, so we asked if there was any way to swap sites to a flat ground site. The answer was no that they were booked up. I believed that, as it was a weekend. However many many sites round us stayed empty for the entirety of our trip. We had a very uneven, root and rock filled site. Our site was L16 and it was right in the river, just 30 feet down, and it also had its own small river running right through the middle of camp. It was a very very wet stay, even though it only rained a few times. It said one 8X8 flat spot for a tent, but there was none. We ended up with two extra people and it cost me another 100$ then when we booked originally and they charged us for 2 tent spots too, when they knew we where in a spot that didn't have that. The lady at the office with dark long hair has a bit of an attitude. So we didn't want to have to ask for much, we had to park our extra car and trailer behind the office. Also making trips back and forth as need be. She's abrasive and doesn't seem like she's happy to be there..... the place is in a beautiful spot, but beware. A few sites have parking quite a ways from sites themselves. These sites will have you walking back and forth to your vehicle quite frequently. They do warn you on the website which sites are best but photos can be misleading. Some of the lean to sites, seemed to have flat ground, and they looked real nice to say at. All in all we did the best we could with a crappy and wet situation. I really think they could have accommodated us and switched our sites to one on flat ground, since almost all around us were empty. It's in a beautiful part of our state, but I don't think we will be back. We will opt for something a bit closer to things, as Byron was a good 30-45 mins either way.
