I like him. I had been with my previous PCP for 15 years, and was heartbroken to have lost her by not being able to see her any longer. The best thing about her was her trust and belief in me (not doubting me), and having her listen and order/do any or all the medical & prescription requests I needed and required. So I was really nervous and anxious about trying out any new doctor. I went through all the PCP's in my health insurance provider search list, and landed on Dr. Dhawan. Granted, ratings for doctors are limited and sparse; usually weighted heavily on the negative side since those are what usually instigates people to even leave ratings & reviews (if a good & satisfying job is done, then people just go on about their lives). But considering all of those, his was high enough rated amongst the other available doctors/options. And I'm happy with my search and results! He's pretty forward, no-nonsense, leaves out small talk or what's extraneous, and is pretty direct. But at the very least, he does listen and considers what I let him know and inform him about (which can't be said about many doctors). He works with my goals and what I'm trying to obtain or accomplish (in terms of my medical needs and wants), considers my health and medical history and current well-being, and I'm able to get out of him what I would like for myself and my medical health. He keeps it simple; which is what I am looking for being the type of man I am -- I have conditions and concerns, he provides and observes and manages them. MOST IMPORTANTLY he does it without me needing to insist or force or convince or fight for it; he actually works with me and tries to understand and at least be open to it. So he keeps things with him and my needs & pharmacy to go pretty uncomplicated. I do appreciate & like that his office (Epic Care) works with MyChart and also Care Everywhere, so he and his office is able to coordinate with my other health care providers (medications, lab work, lab results, etc.) What I would criticize is that he's not so readily available -- appointments with him have to be made out weeks in advance. Another thing; as I mentioned, I enjoy Epic Care being accessible through MyChart, but anytime I communicate and coordinate with his office through MyChart, they are not quite responsive; so much so that I've actually had someone in his office tell me that it's better to call and arrange/discuss things than going through MyChart! For reference/context; I'm speaking about referrals, prescription orders & dosage changes, appointments, even some minor/general medical questions that relate to my care. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but he's located in both San Leandro and Castro Valley -- which I don't mind and if it makes him more available, than I'm all for it; but I live literal blocks away from his San Leandro location that I rather that. Also, as he does leave an impression of simplicity, I don't know if I would trust leaving him with anything more complex or very nuanced. I guess time will tell and/or if more trust & confidence in him is gained to be able to say in the end. So, at the very least, I believe him and so far he's been able to work with me and what I ask from him and what I'm trying to accomplish. read more

Adding my review of Dr. Dhawan to provide another new perspective. I have been a patient of Dr. Dhawan for close to 10 years. It's hard to reconcile the terrible reviews here with my experiences over the years. He has been thoughtful, proactive (with images and testing), and before he joined Epic Care, had the time to chat about things like lifestyle and family. His advice about treatment options has been helpful and he listens when I tell him about research I've done on my own. He has worked with me when I wanted to pull off blood pressure pills in favor of lifestyle changes. He's a 5-star doctor, but his patient load with Epic Care is too high. For a 20-minute check in, I waited 45 minutes in the lobby to see him last month and waited another 15 minutes in the exam room after an assistant took my vitals. This is not the first time I've had to wait, but I don't feel rushed when we meet. He still listens patiently and has discussions rather than trying to rush on to his next patient. Ironically, I now want to go back on my blood pressure med, but I can't get through to his Epic Care office in Castro Valley. No ring, nothing for two days... I give him 4 stars because the overall experience is hampered by his supporting office structure. read more

All of these reviews appear to be fairly old, so let me give you an update on this doctor. STAY THE HELL AWAY. This is probably the worst doctor I've been to ever. My reasons are many, too many to list here. I was a patient here for a few years and the medical care never improved so I left. Rude, lazy, always late to the appts, doesn't listen, Not knowledgeable about his patient and 100% uncaring. Never had my previous medical records transferred. Won't prescribe anything for back pain (severe noted in chart) & treats you like an addict for asking. Doesn't return calls, doesn't get paperwork done and too lazy to refill Rx. Says to go to ER for med refills. Ridiculous. Doesn't give vaccinations, says to go to CVS or Walgreens. Stupid. Insists on an annual physical and never does one. Only listens to heartbeat and breathing. What kind of physical exam is that? I would not let this man examine my dog. read more

Dr. Dhawan has misdiagnosed my parents a number of times in the last year. I believe that he doesn't listen to them because they are elderly. The latest misinformation given to my mother was that Ticks and Lyme disease do not exist in California. This was after she had removed 3 of them and went in because she needed help removing the 4th. He told her it was a scab and not a tick. I saw the ticks with my own eyes. And not sure why he thinks they don't exist in California. Another bad situation was when my father went in complaining of ear aches and feeling like something was blocking his ears. He asked to go to a specialist but Dr Dhawan told him he could look in his ear for him. And told him nothing was wrong. Fast forward six months and my father's ear is greatly bothering him. We book him an appointment with an ear specialist and the doctor finds the tip from his hearing aids are lodged in both ears. One is is badly infected from having the tip in there for so long. These are the two worst situations they have had but there have been more. I am having them find a new general practitioner... someone who can work with elderly folks and listen to them. I've seen Dr Dhawan 4 times in the past year and always was treated with the utmost respect and very professional care. He would have gotten 5 stars, but the office staff isn't as efficient as past MD offices in giving me test results. I am no spring chicken and have had lots of medical care in the past 8 years due to a heart attack. I don't know about the previous reviewer, but suspect he may have been making inappropriate requests of the Dr. The office is very caring and I even received a hardship reduction in an unexpected large bill for a test. read more

I have been seeing Dr Dhawan for years now. I continued seeing him even after I moved to the peninsula since he and the office staff (esp. Elena) have been great to work with. He genuinely cares and take sufficient time to answer any questions and provide guidance. I really appreciated the diligence in following up and ensuring problems are nipped in the bud. UPDATE: I just received a letter from this joke of a doctor informing me I'm no longer a patient. This is after id been waiting 2 weeks for a refill on a medication I had been taking for 5 years.... No phone call from his office, nothing! In the letter, there was no reason so I'm assuming he read my previous review. During my first appointment with Dr.Dhawan he seemed to be a competent and caring Doctor. At my follow up appointment I was stunned by the change in his manner. He was impatient and rude. He would ask a question then not listen when I tried to answer. Worst of all was that when he told me my blood tests showed I had developed a dangerous condition he made no attempt to explain how this could affect me or tell me what I should do to reverse this condition. He asked me no questions about my diet or exercise, nor did he explain how important these things were to controlling my condition. If he was just rude I could handle that. What I can not handle is that he not just a bad Doctor he is a dangerous Doctor. read more

Dr. Deepak was my internist for the month I was in acute rehab following a stroke. He was very respectful and responsive to my concerns. He even saw me over 4th of July weekend. He followed up on my issues, even those I didn't raise with him. Sleep, nausea, headaches, blood pressure, sensation, pain -- he helped me through the difficult weeks of adjusting to disability and as I started to regain function. read more
