This can get a little confusing, because now TWO restaurants operate here as part of the South Shore Brewery: Deep Water Grille and The Alley. They're all attached, they all serve South Shore Brewery's beer, but they have separate menus. Deep Water Grille seems to be a little more upscale, while The Alley is more bar food (pizza, burgers, and some entrees). I dined at "The Alley" with a bunch of beer sampling friends. Everyone clear? The Beer: Nothing wrong here as far as brewpubs go. Didn't dislike anything, nor was I particularly impressed. Better than mediocre, though not anything I would go out of the way for. The Food: Also better than mediocre, or at least more options than you might expect from "bar food". I had the Whitefish Club sandwich. Again, not a homerun, but a solid enough double. So far, we're cruising for a boring 3 star review. Why even write it up, right? The Service: Here's where things went wrong, and went wrong very early. We arrive; we are given food menus. This is a brew pub. Where's the beer list? "Oh, I can just tell you the beers. They're . . ." and she proceeds to quickly rattle off a list of names. Seriously? These aren't brand name beers, and the names she gave us didn't even include category names like "ale" or "porter" or what not. Basically: here's a list of random words, choose one. Under questioning, she can sometimes tell us more about them, sometimes she cannot. Frustrated, we insist there has to be some sort of beer menu. She returns with one. Yes, one. For a table of nine. This book is also of every beer the ever brew, with no designation for the beers they have right now. So all we can do is try to match up the names she gave us, with items in this book. One at a time. We all start with the randomly pick a name approach, and take turns perusing the book while he drink our random beer. Not ideal. Did she bother to mention they had a sampler? No, of course not! That might have actually solved our problems way too easily. The waitress confessed to being new (or was she just saying their dinner menu was new, I'm not sure now), but I really put the blame on the management here. The fact that she is not instructed to hand out beer menus (nor do they apparently have enough to do so) is a BIG problem. The fact that she seems little capable of explaining much anything about the beers, and seemed to think rapidly firing off the names of the beers was a good system, is also a BIG problem. I can only assume this is what they've trained her to do. Perhaps if you're sitting at the bar (where the beer menu she provided came from), and can read their chalk board of beers on tap things go a little more smoothly. Sitting at a table, I could see little indication this place took themselves seriously as a brewpub. read more

They fried the SH&T out of my fish. It was hard and dry and I would have sent it back had I been a regular. Didn't want to be viewed as a whiny tourist, though, so I choked down what I could manage, along with the equally dry potato mash that was plopped onto my plate (and held its shape a bit too nicely) with an ice cream-type scoop. My wife and I ate here on July 27, 2009 while we were in the area visiting some relatives. If you're looking for a place with an outdoor view - this isn't the place - it's a few blocks off the main drag that goes along the Lake Superior coastline in what appears to be a section of Ashland that's seen better days. We were here for dinner - not sandwiches - and I wasn't real impressed with the selection of entrees. I'm not a big fan of thin fish but I ordered the Lake Superior Whitefish on the recommendation of our waitress. Considering we were a few blocks from Lake Superior, I had much higher expectations for both the taste and portion size. Quite frankly, I'd have preferred a burger to the fish - it tasted fishy and I just couldn't get the gluey bottom skin taste off the fish. My wife was disappointed with her entree as well. A couple positive comments - the interior space is very attractive - typical yuppie industrial warehouse style and - our waitress was efficient and friendly. It's tough to review a place based on one experience so take that into consideration. I got the impression that this spot is trying too hard to be more sophisticated than it is. Beer, burgers, and sandwiches might fit this place - and the blue-collar town more comfortably (and successfully). Should my wife and I return in the future - we'll be making our selections from that section of the menu. read more

Of all the places on my trip, I wish we could have one in the TC. I just love the eclectic menu. I had the slow roasted beef pita. It was the best beef sandwich I ever had. It just didn't belong in a toasted pita.Now I know next time I can request a bun. Basil had the special, tri-colored tortellini in a cream sauce. It looked like it should be in a magazine, and was delicious. I tried the beer cheese soup in the special ale. Different. A very beautifully decorated pub, especially the wood. Overall...a very nice experience. I had to try one of their beers on tap so I stopped in. I started looking over the menu and was impressed by the options and so I ordered the garden vegetable burger. The waiter/bar tender was very nice, food came in an acceptable amount of time, and the burger was good. The sweet potato fries were delicious, too. We stayed at the Cobblestone Inn next door to the Deep Water Grille so walked over for dinner. Great pub food and craft beer selection. We'd been here years ago and are happy to see they're still in business after COVID. Nut Brown Beer Cheese Soup remains good as always. Good food, four stars might be generous, but not for the area I don't think. Huge restaurant with tons of seating, and yet a wait, so it seems like THE food spot in the area. Parking lot next to it. Decent beer, although they only had 5 on tap, none and IPA. The lavender ale was good, my friend thought it was too laverdarey, but I liked it. The coffee stout had a strong flavor, but was good. Jalapeno cheese curds were good, black bean burger didn't hold together but was tasty. The raspberry dressing on the salads looked like ketchup but tasted okay. The meatball sub was pretty good, nothing super special or amazing, but good, not dry, and 2 meals' worth. read more

Well, not being from this area, I was looking for a good place to eat before heading on a long car trip home. One of our great law enforcement professionals recommended this place to me, and it definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the Smoked Shrimp Crab Cake Sandwich with sweet potato fries and this was fantastic. The sweet potato fries were probably the best I've ever had, and chose to dip them in ranch, which also was amazingly flavored and had with a hint of dill. I've been here a few times in my life, and each time, I can't really complain about anything. The food is good.. I wouldn't say great... but definitely good! I like their waffle fries, and their Caesar salad is pretty tasty as well.. a bit nontraditional, but tasty. They have specials a lot as well, usually nightly. I find them to be a bit spendy, but at the same time, I never really order that much food in once sitting. You do get a lot of food for what you pay. The price, overall, is decent. Like I said, it is a bit high, but for the most part, reasonable. The service is good, but the restaurant can get pretty busy on the weekend nights! If you want a seat, you may have to call ahead, or go get a tasty South Shore brew from the bar while you wait... another great idea! read more

We stop in for lunch en route to Madeline Island and then back from the Island days later for lunch again. No one has ever been disapointed. The service is good and the food is good - great. Presentation is very good and the home brew is one of my favorite - Herbal Cream Ale is a recomendation for certain. That being said, pay close attention because NO ONE HAS BETTER WINGS THEN THIS PLACE! Their Garlic Whiskey wings is a staple and (wink/nod) after 4 years of trying to figure the receipe out the chef gave it too me. Since then I have been cooking them the same way for neighbors and family and no one denies - it's the best. So good that I generally get comments of arrousment by how good these are. We made reservations (via Yelp!) weeks in advance of the Book Across the Bay ski race, knowing that more than 4,000 hungry skiers, snowshoers, and hikers were going to descend on the town. Sure enough, it was super crowded, but we were seated right away. Despite the chaos of the crowd, our waitress was absolutely wonderful. The food came out hot and fresh, the beer was cold! They say they offer delivery to the Ashland bars and will also give 25% off, however, that is not the case anymore which is very disappointing. They should make a list of the bars they chose not to so people don't spend time choosing items in the menu to get told they won't deliver, then you have to find a new place. Therefore, lacking customer service. The Whiskey Wings were really tasty and they came with tortilla chips. It was a very disappointing that there wasn't celery (FYI: when I asked they said if we want celery then we need to ask for it). I don't like Bleu Cheese but whatever kind they have is really good. (It's not very chunky for those who like that.) The burgers were also good. A little over done but not by much and the waffle fries are always a good side choice. We also ordered the Cod 2-piece. One person liked it and the other thought it was alright. Looking at it from a price standpoint, it was satisfying for what was paid for. The macaroni bowls are superb! Very tasteful and filling. You literally don't want to stop eating them but know your stomach will explode if you don't. Overall we recommend ordering from here (and the Deep Water Grille side as well). read more

The food is great and so is the environment. I ordered a broiled whitefish sandwich, with a side of sweet potato fries. The fish was cooked perfectly; it was tender, containing subtle, delicious flavor. A soft, not too bready, hoagie held the fish. Crispy red onion and fantastic pepper-dill mayo complimented the fish, perfectly. I liked the fries, which were obviously frozen, but that wasn't a big deal. Their dill ranch, which I dipped my fries in, was fantastic and house-made. Our server was Jen and she was everything a great server should be: attentive, charismatic, quick, and knowledgeable. Deep Water Grille is top notch! I have been here 3 other times and it was good, but tonight out waitress and the manager made it GREAT! I initially came in with a bad mood, and the waitress was great! I was initially hesitant as we were seated in the loft(and honestly I didn't want to be here). Our waitress, Jenny Maveeto, was the best ever and was super patient (even though I waited at least 20 minutes to order because I didn't really want to be here initially) She made the perfect recommendations and was pleasant despite my indecisiveness. I first ordered a cucumber mint gimlet. Then dinner (my husband got the prime rib and i got the walleye) They were both incredible. The manager (Adam) who stopped to make sure everything was top notch was also incredible!!! He was so friendly. No one seemed rushed or irritated (which I really appreciated). For dessert I ordered the SS float which was the perfect touch! All around everything was the great! read more

This is a top notch, first class restaurant all the way. This was my second visit to the Deep Water Grille and both were excellent. This is an upscale casual eatery that specializes in regional cuisine as well as a first class offering with beers brewed on site. My meal this evening started with a Clam Chowder with a twist - instead of potatoes, the chowder contained wild rice. It was an interesting twist that added a savoryness that almost overtook the clams, but yet still succeeded. The main course was the Seared Ruby Red Yellowfin Tuna Steak served on top of a squash risotto with grilled asparagus and a saffron cream sauce. The presentation was just fantastic. It was so artful that I was reluctant to break it up. I do not like underdone tuna, and my piece was cooked precisely to my order. The tuna was just lightly seasoned, which allowed you to control the flavor by how you combined it with the sauce and the risotto. The way in which these flavors interacted was something you rarely experience in a meal. I do not eat dessert when on the road, but if they get their pies and cakes from the renowned Ashland Bakery down the street, it's bound to be special. read more
