What to order: - 8oz acai bowl for optionality toppings-wise and so the sugar kick doesn't hit you too hard What to watch out for: - the acai mixture they use is quite sweet - steep prices - maybe split a larger one with a friend - not sure if the cups/spoons they give you are compostable or even recyclable - food court seating so maybe don't come at a peak time ===== Came here on a weekday evening and it was ok. Took a while to order and get our food because there was only one person handling everything. I ordered an 8oz acai "bowl" (it's really just a plastic cup ok) - $6.99, which looked a lot smaller than I expected but it was probably for the best since this was essentially dessert masquerading as health food :'( I added blueberries, kiwi, goji berries, and cacao nibs. The purple acai base they use is quite sweet, as others have mentioned, and (maybe this is obvious, but it wasn't to me at the time!) the order in which you say what toppings you want determines where they're placed; my friend also ordered an 8oz acai cup with blueberries and kiwi but because she mentioned those toppings last they were arranged artfully on top of her cup rather than sqooshed into oblivion somewhere around the bottom like they were for me. In terms of quantity and taste rather than aesthetics it probably doesn't make a difference. I like that you can choose as many toppings as you want, regardless of size. The goji berries and cacao nibs tasted fine but were extremely crunchy and poky - I've never really had those things on their own before but for some reason I assumed the goji berries would be softer and the cacao nibs cut into smaller pieces. Ah, well, live and learn. Honestly not sure if I would come back unless they did some kind of promotion because it is fairly pricy and I'm not in the habit of getting "healthy" dessert (does that even exist...?) when I go out to buy some. Maybe if I split a large one with a friend or if I came to try the smoothies. I do appreciate that their acai is organic and their ingredients locally-sourced and that this is probably healthier than downing a large bubble tea or snarfing some donuts. read more

My first time trying an acai "bowl" and it was delicious! They're a bit pricey, but generously give unlimited toppings which is nice. The acai itself is delicious. Very sweet, so I'm not sure how healthy it actually is, but that's fine. Good texture, no ice crystals and a smooth thick smoothie texture. I got mine with granola and almond butter and fruit on top. It actually made me look into acai mixes to make myself bowls at home, it was so good. I'll definitely be coming back here, I'm very glad I tried this place. I was waiting on my train and was trying to decide between this place and Panda Express, I chose this thinking I was selecting the healthier option, I wish I had gotten Panda Express. I asked for the 12oz deep blue smoothie, they told me they only had 16oz or 20oz, so I went with the 12oz. The menu said it would be made with spirulina, almond milk, honey and bananas. My drink tasted like cheap vanilla ice cream, did not taste any honey or spirulina. The drink did look blue but I think it may be food coloring. I wish they would make the smoothies in front of us so we can see what is put into the blender. Instead, they go behind a wall to make it. I also ordered a chicken empanada which had a decent flavor, but was dry and left my stomach feeling not too happy. They have the empanadas sitting under a lamp and this location was not busy at all so I don't know how long they sat there for. The only reason I give it two starts and not one, is because the place itself looks clean, At least from what I could see. Like I said, it looks like most of the preparation is done behind a wall so I hope they are as clean back there as they are in the front. Also, this place is definitely overpriced. Food (5/5): Great tasting acai, fresh, quite sweet, but that depends on what toppings you get. I love the fact that topping is unlimited but my 8 oz cup doesn't do it justice at all. Anyways, they have a wide range of toppings to choose from and you can technically get all of them but it would be wise to choose a bigger size if you were to do that. Price (4/5): It's...quite expensive. It costs $7 for an 8 oz cup but I think the unlimited topping sort of compensates for the steep price. Acai bowls have never been known for being affordable anyways so can't complain too much about it. Definitely a treat to get once in a while when I want something sweet, fresh, and fairly healthy. This is a pretty solid açaí bowl place-- if you're fine splurging $14. I got a medium sized bowl with just about every topping and it was delicious! I've had a problem with açaí bases either being watery and unflavorful or just not very good but this place surpassed my expectations. The toppings are all good and appeared to be fresh. I also love the concept that you can get as many as you want, so obviously I had got my money's worth. One issue I had was there was a maintenance guy drilling a door or something which would not have bothered me however it was extremely loud. My friend and I were annoyed because it was so loud we couldn't hear eachother at all and had to leave. Sitting outside in the chicago winter with a cup of cold mushy stuff is not fun. This new açaí bowl place is a great addition to the Ogilvie Transformation Center. While the food court at Ogilvie Transformation Center is nicely redone, most of restaurants there are still unhealthy fast food restaurants. Deep Purpl is a breath of fresh air among a lot of unhealthy choices. I tried two of their açaí bowls and loved them both. One of them had a lot of fresh fruit like strawberries, bananas and blueberries. The other one I tried had some delicious almond butter and was topped with chocolate and goji berries. I love that there is now a great option to grab something quick, filling and healthy on the way to catch a train or on the way to work. The staff is very friendly and passionate about healthy food. I want to like this place SO BAD! It's a great addition to all the disgusting fast food places in Ogilvie but holy sweet! I usually make my own unsweetened açaí smoothies at home (I add a small amount of sweetener) but this was overwhelmingly sweet. Not sure if they add sweetener themselves or if it's in the mix they use. Toppings felt kinda sparse too. I won't not recommend this place to people bc they definitely have good intentions and it's a way better option than McDonalds but in the future, I'll be going to Jamba or the smoothie place in the French Market for my smoothie/açaí fix. read more
