I was a member here for over 12 years before leaving due to high membership costs. If you use the facility for everything that it has to offer, then it is worth it the money. My main interest at DHAC was to utilize the fitness area and take the classes. Their cardio equipment is top notch but some of the weight machines need to be upgraded. As far as classes go, I was more than happy to walk away from this gym. They offer the same classes they did 12 years ago! Body pump, spin, yoga, and an aqua class. It is the same all the time! They never want to introduce anything new and if they do, they pass it along to an inexperienced trainer because they do not want to make the effort. The one class that all the members truly enjoyed was Zumba because the instructor was so committed and really connected with her students. They of course let her go for no reason and we were left with a less than worthy replacement. If you need to take a class, look to Meghan's Spin class or a class with Jill (note: they are outside instructors which is why the class is more enjoyable and effective. They are about the members, not the drama!) The management is awful and definitely caters to those they are friends with. It is very "clicky" and if you aren't in the "in" crowd, you can forget about sharing your opinion or having any concerns addressed. There are a lot of romantic relationships going on there as well that are put out in full view of the members. Very unprofessional environment! All in all if you have the cash, go to Fitness LA in Chestnut Hill instead. Beautiful, clean, and updated facility. I have been a member 4 years for convenience of location and a pool. The somewhat gloomy club facilities miss being top notch by a good margin. While there are several staffers behind the front desk hanging out, very little checking in on the rest of the facility is apparent--dirty studio floors, cold locker rooms, etc. The level of service and limited class schedules do not justify the fees. The pool is used for rehab at some times and also regular aerobics classes, eliminating 2 of the lanes from use by lap swimmers. Rehab staff in pool can be quite rude and unprofessional to club members. The longstanding geographic monopoly may be sorely challenged by new Lifestyle gym in Westwood. read more

I took my child for water babies swimming class here. Overall I am very unhappy with the experience. When I initially paid for the registration I mentioned that we will be on vacation for 2 of the classes and if there was an opportunity to make up these classes. I was assured that all I will have to do was to talk to the Manager and it will be all set. After registering I asked to have swimming manager to call me back and re-schedule classes that my child will miss, I left my phone number at the front desk. I never got a phone call. I tried calling DAH and every time Swimming Manager wasn't available as he was in the pool. I left my information at the front desk on multiple occasions and never heard back. Classes themselves were disorganized and there was a new instructor (usually a high school kid) every other week as main instructor, Mike, was at swim outs. On occasion classes would start earlier and "new" instructors will finish them earlier and I had to remind them that we still had 10 minutes to go. It's infant swimming classes and I realize that it's just to acclaim your child with the water, but I wish there was more consistency from week to week and classes were more organized. There is also only 2 showers available and we constantly had to wait after the class to shower our child. I asked if I can use showers at the women's changing room and was told it was for members only. Very inconvenient considering you have to wait 20 minutes or longer with sometimes a cranky baby. When we signed up for the classes we were considering signing up for the gym as well, but after our experience I will not be signing up and will take my money somewhere else. Very poor management. I also had multiple calls/e-mails from DAH asking me to sign up for the next swimming session but nothing about making up the classes that I was told I was able to. Obviously they have my contact information. when I told girl on a phone that I will not be signing up due to poor management from them she just hanged up. My recommendations would be try somewhere else and swimming classes were not worth my time or money. read more

What a horrible place! My sone called to cancel from the hospital. they said he had to come in, which he couldn't. They kept debiting his account, and when his empty account could not pay the fee (he's still in the hospital), they kept charging him fees. I offered to pay what the bill was when they were notified, but no, they want all, or they will keep charging him and sending it to collections. What an unethical outfit. My wife and I joined the DHAC about 2 months ago and we have really enjoyed our experience so far. I was doing swimming classes with our 19 month old daughter there and decided to check it out a little further. We got the rundown from Pam, a memeber representative, who was both very friendly and informative before we finally decided to join. Some Pros: There are a bunch of classes, all of which we have enjoyed so far. There are various options ranging from cycling to Bollywood dance to cardio and my personal favorite, Trailmix with Jason. The equipment is pretty state of the art and there are always plenty of machines with some redundancy to the more popular ones. There is a separate area for people not as familiar with resistance training too which takes away some of the anxiety they may have when working out at a place like WOW or Planet Fitness. They have plenty of tennis courts for member use and they offer some free new member clinics if you are so inclined. The instruction I had was good and I am looking forward to playing with some other members sometime soon. No court fees from Memorial Day to Labor Day. They have a kids only pool which is awesome. No worries about dodging swimmers. The pool is salt water as well so no stinging eyes and a cleaner feeling coming out. Raquetball courts, of which there are two, have been recently resurfaced and they get a lot of use. The facilities are reasonably clean and large and there are ample showers, a sauna and steam room. The childcare we have gotten so far has been worth the fee it costs for our daughter to join ($40-45 a month). They love holding her when she needs it and they have three separate rooms for the little ones to play in. They also have a big padded gymnastics area with tumbling mats. Our little one loved running around up there when she was learning to walk. Other things I haven't tried but hopefully will....basketball court, indoor track, rock climbing wall with bouldering area and golf hitting mat and net, children's karate classes. Seems like they are upgrading a lot of the facility too. Recently upgraded some LifeFitness machines and redoing the entryway with granite tiling. Some Cons: The cost is a pretty high ($220 per month for our family of 3) but the childcare is well worth it. It would also be nice to include a guest pass or two for each paying member so my friend and I could play tennis without him having to fork over $40 (for him and his 11 month old daughter) everytime. Tennis court fees during fall to spring. I probably won't play besides taking a clinic or two if I have some extra cash. Definitely an older crowd there which is not too big of a deal but miss some of the youthfulness of the WOW crowd. Separate outdoor water park costs a crapload! Again, for what we pay, maybe a day pass or two for paying members would be in order. Let us see what it is all about and then entice us to join. So in all, it works for us. We love the childcare, classes and everyone has been very welcoming to us and our daughter. We'll stay members since it is close by and has lots of the benefits you'd expect from a high priced gym....plus the cost is an incentive to get our butts in there to use it! read more

We called this fitness center ahead of time to inquire about costs. The only thing they divulged was the $95 a month charge. They also expressly stated that they do not require a long term commitment. When we arrived there to talk business, the rep suddenly told us, although pretending that it is nothing unusual, that this fitness center has an astronomic $ 375 one time registration fee on top of the monthly fee. What a false advertising to lure us there and waste our valuable time! They have no registration expenses that would warrant such an astronomic one time charge, so they are in reality trying to obfuscate that they need a prepaid 'long term commitment fee'. To be avoided at all costs. They must not be doing well with their registration fee, since it was not very busy there on a weekday evening after office hours. read more

I'm reviewing the PT service here not the club. I went to the spine center on the floor below and they were great. Individual service and attention. Once I got upgraded to the top PT section things shifted some. I felt like the folks would often talk to each other and not the patient necessarily. The work they did was good though. OK - I know this place is expensive initially, but it gets cheaper as you add more members. By the time my son was born, adding him only cost us $30 extra dollars a month AND that includes his care (described below) while we work out. Keep in mind that DHAC doesn't have just ANY childcare... Once my kid was born, I needed a gym to go to that has a good childcare service with a clean kids area. This place goes above and beyond that. They have an awesome kids area with employees who are incredibly friendly and caring. The kids section is divided into separate play areas by age group - babies (6 months and up), toddlers, and big kids. They allow you to leave your children with them for up to four hours a day (2 hours in the AM, 2 hours in the PM). My husband and I both agree - this is the best money we've ever spent. We tag-team on child care during the week, so DHAC is a big part of us keeping our sanity and staying physically healthy. If you are a regular gym person (it won't be economical for you if you quit going after a few months) and have kids, this place is for you. read more

I definetly don't reccomend this gym. It is terrible. The staff is annoying, and the lifeguards can't let you do anything fun without blowing the whistle. I joined DHAC at the beginning of the summer and use it several times a week. I love that some personal training sessions are included in the cost of membership. I've also been doing the aqua aerobics classes a couple times a week...they are great! The staff is professional and knowledgeable and seem to enjoy their jobs. The negatives are the price and initiation fee. Also, there's no towel service!...for these prices they should really offer all the amenties offered at less expensive gyms. It's also quite pricey ($20) to invite a guest. And they are closed on holidays. Even the "cheap" gyms have some hours on holidays. read more

I would not recommend this place as it is very outdated and their fitness techniques are not innovative. I also had a recent verbal altercation with one of the person trainers there and she was very rude and disrespectful. This verbal altercation really proved that Dedham Health is lacking in professionalism. If you are going to spend that kind of money for a health club you are really better off going somewhere where you can be in a respectful more innovative, supportive environment. When you first walk in, you'll think the place is great. It appears to be loaded with all sorts of gym stuff and activities to meet your needs. If you spend some time here, your mind will change. And I was only there for physical therapy. The equipment is "gym equipment". The locker rooms are "locker rooms". It's a gym. Speaking of locker rooms: Guys put a freaking towel on! No one wants to observe grown men walking around like a two year old breaking out of their diapers. It's uncomfortable. The gym itself has your run of the mill "gym weirdos" too. The Physical Therapy: I went to therapy here years ago for a knee injury and had a really good experience. The therapist took time and worked one on one with me. I recently got hurt and thought of only one place. This place. What a difference a few years made. I'm not sure if the spine center (upstairs) is connected to the operation in the basement floor. I noticed that the therapists would ask me questions on how I was feeling. When I told them that my back was more sore after the previous appointment, they noted it and upped the weights and the reps. They also said, "Well, it's either muscular, spine, nerves or a disc." No shit, really??? Did you look at my MRI??? I'm a firm believer in no pain/no gain. I'm not much of a whiner, so I continued to do what was required of me because I thought, "why question the professionals?" I took a week off and my back started feeling better. I returned and told them I believed it was an exercise that was aggravating my injury. They noted it and said they would watch me the next time I showed up. That got me thinking, "Why weren't you watching me from the start?" That last appointment, someone actually stopped me and said I was doing the exercise wrong (Thanks bub, I've only been here for a month) I will say there were a few pleasant employees there. One of them could tell I was down in the dumps regarding my back injury and always made a point to make me laugh and talk a bit. She ended up leaving for better things. On the flip side, there's another female employee who looks like she's being held captive there. Save your time and money. The place does not care about your health. They want your money. Go elsewhere for physical therapy. If you want to join a gym, go to BSC for half the price. They also give out TOWELS!!! read more

Note that all negative reviews are from people who are not members and never have been. This is a great family gym. It's also expensive. But there is nothing that compares to it at a lower price point. If you want professional daycare, kid programs, salt water pools, tennis courts galore, personal training included, high standards of cleanliness, friendly and knowledgeable staff -- along with the typical machines and classes (plus a few classes that most clubs DON'T offer) -- then DHAC is the best bet in the area. Even if you don't like the sales people you meet coming in, don't worry too much about it, you will never have to interact with them again. The trainers, the instructors, the daycare staff, the front desk staff are all quite good. I do like some instructors more than others in terms of teaching ability but that'd be true at any gym. read more

I've been going to DHAC for 9 years and always feel that the facilities don't match the quality of the staff. But after looking around quite a bit I like the big open facilities, lots of fresh moving air, the friendly, knowledgeable staff, free advice and training, lots of machine and free weight options. The tennis area is wonderful and they have excellent pros working there with instructions for all ages. Guy's karate for kids is amazing. The members are respectful and a nice mix of professionals and folks from universities, and government agencies such as police, and fire. It's definitely not a snobby upscale place. Overall DHAC has the potential to be great if it can break out of its box! On the negative side, the locker room smells real baaaad all of the time, it's either poorly ventilated or not cleaned or both. The sound system is rather weak (though improved a bit recently) and video options for aerobics are shown on small low resolution 80's era monitors featuring conservative news shows and trashy reality tv shows. There is a suggestion box but don't expect a response. The cost is worth it only if many options the facility offers are used at least 3x per week. The ambience is, well, um, you know... Nevertheless, the management is consistently upgrading the part that counts so my bottom line is a thumbs up but not way up, at least not just yet... read more

This health club is not good for pool membership. They double dip.. literally. After the hour of 3:30 pm swim lessons start up and 75% of the family pool is used for swim lessons. Then around 5pm to closing a very large swim team starts up and the pool is totally monopolized by them. Swim lesson students, siblings and team members are all allowed to use the member lanes prior and during the sessions. Club management doesn't care because they are making double the money by charging members for their side of the pool and then not allowing them to use it. You won't find any members in the family pool area after 3:00 every day until closing. The adult pool is dirty due to a large water aerobics groups that use the pool 2 hours a day. Family pool is also dirty from over use. I think the saltwater pool system is not meant to handle this much volume. read more

Firstly, the gym is awesome and the pools are spacious. But the family pool smells moldy and both contain something that itches my skin afterwards. The changing facilities in the family pool are moldy, humid and smelly and the drains frequently flood. But the swim lessons are great and my daughter loves the pool. Separately there is the kids summer club which i would give 5 stars!! Awesome clean pools and facilities. The equipment is ALWAYS being updated along with the felicity. The Staff are very knowledgeable and is always trying new things to help out their members. You have so many choices at DHAC, for example, tennis, racquetball, yoga, cycling, trail mix, zumba, TRX, Water Aerobics, basketball, Lazor Tag, also so many children's class for all ages. I've been a member for many years. In brief, this club has everything: gym with a free personal trainer program, a great child care facilty, swimming pool, track, pool tables, snack bar,etc. - and an excellent tennis program. We've shopped around and found that even for just tennis alone, if you play more than once a week you can't beat the price. Unlike many such athletic facilities, the staff and members here are congenial and create a private club atmosphere all day long for all age groups. If you just want to play tennis once week or just run on a treadmill, you can probably do better elsewhere, otherwise this is your best deal. read more

I am shocked as to the ratings for DHAC. All the people who seem to be rating are those people who don't belong. This is a CLUB, not a mere Workout World, Planet Fitness etc. If you have kids this place is for you. There are so many kids activities, areas, classes that they are never bored. They are constantly remodeling, fixing areas of the gym. All the floor mats were being replaced this week. I never see that at other gyms. Recently they added a new movie viewing/theatre area. Before that they made a laser tag court. Before that they renovated the basketball courts. It goes on and on. They have a seniors workout area ( that is very nice) to encourage fitness and not scare/intimidate them from the younger crowd. So they cater to every age. Joining makes you want to go. You are paying for a club. And it is expensive but the programs and facilities are there and worth it. The reason why I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 as this is not a facility like Canyon Ranch etc. If you are serious about working out and need every option in the book then this is for you. If you want an elliptical machine, with tv then I'd look elsewhere. read more

Can't say enough good about this place. I have been and am a member off and on 3 times in the last 13 year. (I am an active member now) I have left twice, only because I have moved and then moved back. There are Pro's and Con's to every gym. The Pro's FAR outweigh the Con's for me here. The machines are clean and they have taken great steps to make sure people clean their machines/weights. (Pet Peeve- CLEAN YOUR MACHINE WHEN YOU'RE DONE!) Some décor is dated, but they have done a much better job lately putting money back into the place and equipment lately. To someone who reviewed the children's area must have been at a different gym or didn't see Downtown and/or hadn't been in awhile. They have a new state-of-the-art teen area and a great younger kids area was well, with a homework area too. And the childcare is FREE while mom and dad work out. Classes are abundant and also FREE with membership. Visits with your own personal trainer are also FREE with membership. The trainers also frequently walk the floor and give pointers if they see you doing something detrimental to your workout goals. I didn't get any of that at shiny places like BSC, Planet Fitness, WOW. And sure, it might be cheaper at the other places, but then you get nickel and dimed to death (childcare, classes, etc). If you utilize your membership to DHAC, it's well worth the cost (which would be one complaint for me, it is a little steep). The management have listened to people (on here) and their own clientele and really done a bunch in the last 6 months. They did the pools over and the children's area. The Wellness Center is great for people trying to get back into it. My son (5) does rock climbing once a week for free. The swimming, karate and other kids classes are reasonably priced. The Summer Club is nice. I just can't justify the extra expense of Summer Club, as we aren't home a lot on the weekends, so we will just get a day pass a couple times this summer. I can't speak for the Tennis or Squash/Racquetball Courts. I don't play. Sorry to sound like an employee or a fanboy, but the proof is in the results for me. 75 Pounds lost. And my life gained back. There is no yearly contract, at all. I hope this helps with your decision. But as with anything, be your own person and judge for yourself. And above all, Be WELL! Pros: This is a great club if you like to work out, take a lot of fitness classes and play tennis. Fitness classes and personal training are included in the monthly fee. Tennis courts are $22 an hour, which is less than most other tennis clubs charge. The tennis pros are excellent. It isn't a snobby club and has a relatively diversified membership of many age groups and ethnicities. I can't speak about the kids programs because I never used them. I belong here because of the tennis otherwise I would join the YMCA. Cons: High sign up fee. Some clubs waive their signup fees and/or give a free month as incentives but not here. Other clubs allow you to "freeze" your membership for the summer or if you go away for part of the year and just pay a nominal monthly fee. The monthly fee is on the expensive side if you aren't interested in playing tennis all year. It would be nice to get one free guest pass a year. read more

Dedham Helth is a lovely, big and very beautiful. My baby he is 2 and half and he is very happy when he is there. The pool is safe, NO BLEACH and very clean. The summer club is wonderful. Its a little expensive 98 dollars per person, second one 79 and kids 45 but is worth it. YMCA is cheap but is a little dirty, messy, so many joung man every where you go. Special in the afternoon and talk only bad words. So I choice Dedham Helth, more money but its more elegant. Remember this is not Gym, its a club and is a family club. A place where you can relax at the jacuzzi, pool, play, kids can have fan at the downtown and have fan at the summer club island pool. Very nice place... I believe that its depend of how you see the glass?...half empty or HALF FULL. read more

I went there for a year. Pros are the basketball courts, indoor pool, and how it is not crowded. Cons are that young teenagers cannot use the equipment even if a parent is helping and you have to pay extra money to use the outdoor pool. read more

I have been a member of DHAC for over 4 years. I have been a member of other health clubs both on the North Shore and South Shore. This club has provided social and health benefits for all of my family. I have looked into other clubs in the area and believe that this one offers users much more in the way of classes and equipment. The staff really does care about the club and its members. Price is not the only consideration. Beware of other clubs that just collect a monthly fee and provide little or nothing in return. read more

Can I give them 0 stars? I stopped in and was considering joining but the price was very high at $125 a month at the cheapest excluding all tennis fees and not including the high sign on fee. The next day I got a phone call that they would waive the steep joining fee. So I decided to go in person the next day to join given they waived the sign on fee. The person I talked to, a different associate, who was extremely rude, said they would not waive the joining fee even though I was offered that by another associate the day before. If you're under 30 there is no joining fee. I am just a few weeks past 30 and plan to spend a lot of money on the high tennis court fees and yet they wouldn't work with me, going back on their promises. I walked out the door and found a better gym, the BSC with tons of locations near work and at home for $55 less a month. The dedham athletic club claims to have the cheapest tennis court fees in the area but that's a blatant lie. BSC is about half the price for court fees and a much cheaper monthly membership. Dedham athletic has Outdated locker rooms and very limited class options early AM or weekdays ( the last class offended on Sunday is 11AM). This would be a great gym if you were retired and had nothing to do all week..... And if the employees weren't so rude. read more

I started at this club through a special program to help compulsive overeaters. I got tremendous support as I began exercising, which kept me trying though I was truly terrified at first of being unable to even walk on the treadmill. Each person who worked with me, especially Robbie who guided those in my program along with several other exercise physiologists, encouraged me to take it slowly and keep my eye only on the next goal. Eight weeks later when I "graduated" from the behavioral program, I signed up as a full member. I am confident I will NEVER get bored. There are many classes and more equipment than I could try out in a year of Saturdays. I've faltered a bit and slacked off, and when I came back, Robbie, Dodi, Jason and others are right there rejoicing with me as I get back on track. The trainers are truly knowledgable, the members are friendly, and I have never felt snubbed or uncomfortable, something that I felt the 3 other places I've tried in the past. There are people in great shape there, elderly people, lots of diabetics, and people very overweight like me. The price is high, but when you factor in all the free personal training, the incredible hours- open very early, close at 11 pm except Sundays, which I think is 10?- the many classes and huge amount of equipment, I think it's worth it, so I adjusted my budget, and invested in ME- my health and wellbeing is worth it. read more

The best of the best. . The exercise physiologists have helped with my balance. Have taken the BASE eight week program which is excellent and am now taking the eight week 60-60 program. After being a member here for 4 years I finally had to end my contract and move on to another gym. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time here and the facilities and some of the staff are great and the equipment and pools etc are well maintained and updated consistently. What was not appreciated especially for a member as long as I have been one, was the fact this place increases its dues for members without telling you they are doing it. Over the course of 4 years my dues went up an average of $20 per year and the last increase was almost $30. According to the membership department, this is hidden language in your contract that they can freely increase dues whenever they want. Besides the fact you pay what amounts to a car payment for a Family Membership and then on top of that to even get in 3 car payments plus annual dues. Then if you want to add swimming lessons for the kids or any specialty classes there are more fees on top of this. If you want to join their "Summer Club", try adding on another $2000 for the summer which is outrageous. It took me a while to stomach the cost, but I finally got over it after visiting the others in the area. If all you need is a cardio machine, then go to Planet Fitness ($10-$20 a month). If you want serious weights and really chill management, but with limited cardio machines, then head to what used to be World Gym ($35 a month). If you want basketball and swimming with whatever else they throw in there, go to the West Roxbury Y for $55/month. On the other hand, if you want all 3 options wrapped into one, this is your best bet. Is it worth the $95/month and large enrollment fee? for you to decide. The most ridiculous thing is that you get no free guest passes ($20 a visit with a member). Considering they have sports facilities like racquetball and basketball, I think that's a little greedy. in contrast, you can bring a guest every time to planet fitness with the $20 membership (though you're stuck with limited equipment). read more

I am very dissapointed with the way personnel treat customers.I signed up my son for water baby class and after the first class he got sick,so I made up 2 classes.i had to call 3 times,2 of which noone called me back.they said we can do one class at 9.10 that goes for 30 minutes and another one at 10.20.I asked what should we do for 40 minutes between the classes,i was told that we have to get out of the swimming pool as we are not members and do whatever we want to.it's really hard to wait there with a toddler that is running around and there's no place for kids to play but a lot of stairs and you have to be very carefull so kid doesnt fall down. i asked then to roll over classes,i eas told i can do that just if i buy the next session.i am very,very dissapointed read more

It really annoyed me that they wouldn't give out the prices for their outdoor pool summer club over the phone. I had to drag my three kids over to be given a time consuming tour. So I just wanted to let others know so they don't have to go through the hassle that it's approx $2,000 to join the summer club in 2011. This rate goes down if you join again the following year. I have to say that after my tour I felt the brochures and pictures online make this place look way better than it actually was. It's really just one big pool surrounded by lots of cement and chain link fence. For the summer club you don't get to use any of the indoor facilities, not even the locker rooms. They have a few small and unimpressive changing rooms and that's it. Clearly I'm not joining! read more

While this is a nice gym, it is overpriced. My biggest problem with this gym though is DEFINITELY its cancellation policy. I was moving abroad for work, and when I had to cancel my membership for this reason, the gym told me I had to pay this absurd "contract" cancellation fee even though I had been a member for two years. I tried to negotiate down (or get rid of) the cancellation fee altogether, but they wouldn't budge. So instead of "cancelling" and paying their fee, I walked out and decided to cancel my credit card so they had nothing to charge for "future" months of my non-use of their overpriced facility. read more
