I love this place my daughter and I have been coming here for 4 yrs now. She started afterschool and I started my health journey here. Everyone is great! My daughter has taken swim classes, karate and she's enjoyed them all. She also goes to camp there. Overall, the Y is kept clean and everyone that goes there are very nice and humbled. read more

Place isn't so bad. Its a little tight in the weights area so its all based on timing. Early in the morning there aren't as much people then it picks up around lunch and afternoon. Depending on the time of the year I feel like it gets more packed. When its summer time and kids don't have school most of them come and hang out here. Always keep track of the schedule for the coming months. They usually have it posted, it's always changing. For the most part they stick to the times of the schedules. I came here and played basketball a few times and its always the same people. It can get a little rowdy and competitive at times so if that isn't your thing, this might not be the place for you. As for the staff they have always been helpful with any questions I had. If you plan on discontinuing your membership just remember to give someone a heads up at the front desk. You have to give them notice 15 days or something before your next billing cycle to get your paper work done and on time. Just wish they had more room and courts. Love this place. Great people great classes. I love the new equipment. For the price it's really worth it. The amount of free classes are great to get you healthy. I have yet to do a personal trainer but I hear good things. The staff is very friendly and helpful. A few draw backs would have to be the parking. It's terrible I don't blame the YMCA because the building is very old in an awkward place. Go very early and you will be sure to get a spot. The cleanliness of the place is not amazing. The workout areas are good however the locker rooms floors are gross as well as the gym floor. Doing the classes in the gym is kinds gross because they don't clean the floor. The last thing would be that kids can run rampant which can suck. But you deal. All in all its a great place and good value if you use it! read more

Unsafe environment! My son worked out there during his lunch hour with very few people in the building. His locker was broken into by a thief who cut off his lock. He reported it and the Y refused to do anything to help find the thief. They refused to look at cameras to determine who entered and exited the locker room. There was no sense of compassion from the staff. They refused to call the police. I left a message for the administration in Boston and there was no return of my phone call. My son has been a member for quite awhile and my business has made several donations to the Y in the past and this response is reprehensible. read more

I've been a member of the Greater Boston Y since 1996, so I remember what the "old" Hyde Park YMCA was like ... and this new version is fantastic. People have mentioned the parking, a shortage of equipment and some overcrowding and while all of that is true, this is what anyone should expect in an urban neighborhood gym. The pool is beautiful, the equipment is well-maintained and relatively new, and the locker rooms are clean. And the best aspect of the Hyde Park branch is the staff - everyone is friendly and responsive. It's an urban family gym, so you need to be aware that there will be kids all over the place - they run great afterschool and swim programs and offer babysitting (which I think is free?), so if you have young kids this place is great. Of course, this means that you have to be open to dealing with occasional shenanigans (kids in the adult locker room, kids running around corners with their heads down, etc.) but it's part of the deal. If you hate crowds, early mornings (6-7:30) are pretty quiet on weekdays and mid-days are great if you can swing it. Another review mentioned that they only have 6 parking spaces, which is true, but the whole area has on-street parking and I've never not found a space reasonably close by. Overall - inexpensive, friendly, clean, good equipment, love it. read more

I love the Hyde Park Y! It has nice, spacious, clean locker rooms, at least for the women. Nice cardio rooms to work out in space and grace! I haven't used the spinning room but they will unlock it for you when a class isn't going on, and there are two separate spinning bikes in the weights room, which I have used. I really enjoyed a Zumba class I took there. I haven't swum in the pool but it is beautiful and new. The after school program children seem happy and well-cared for. And the staff is great. This is one of my favorite Ys in the Greater Boston network. read more

When this was renovated and opened back up a few years ago it was too $$$ for my family to join. About 1.5 years ago they lowered the rate and waived the join fee. We joined as a family of 3 and are glad with our decision. It's affordable for working class families in Hyde Park and I appreciate that appeal. It's also clean (I swear I've seen the bathrooms being cleaned every time I have come). The people working there are very nice and check-in is easy. I really love the heated pool there and used it weekly during my triathlon training last year. It was really nice to warm up on cold winter days. The personal trainers are also friendly and affordable. We've been going to Bobby for over a year now and he's great to work with. He encourages you to work hard but isn't a jerk like many trainers at other gyms are. We have fun together (while working out hard). It's by far one of the cheapest personal trainer sessions in Boston. The equipment is very nice and new. They replaced all the equipment this year and the old equipment wasn't even that old! The equipment definately exceeds other gym's equipment. Only suggestion would be to have better hair dryers in the women's bathroom and more of them. There's only one and it's always occupied. And more parking! Parking can be real hard during busy hours, street parking is usually the only option. read more

This is one of the newer Greater Boston Y's. I joined because there was $0 joiner fee and my work was given a discount. All in all, I pay $28 a month, which is a steal around for quality gyms! There is a pool for lessons and open swims. The facility is fairly large with a dance studio for most group fitness classes, a spin room, weights, a gym, treads and ellipticals, etc. Showers are in basement and are usually clean. One thing to be concerned about here is parking. On most days, around the 5 pm hour, it is congested on River St. It's not the Y's fault obviously, but it can be frustrating if you're trying to make a class and you can't park. The remedy is to get to this place early. The classes can fill up quickly with regulars, which is a testament to the caliber of the instructors and classes. There are tons of classes, which start @ 5:30. The place opens by 5. It's a huge deal now that they have readjusted their member rates. read more

The place is clean and well managed but the facilities disappointed me. I know it's not a full on gym but the fact there's barely any stations and NO squatting station turned me off. It's great if you go for classes and if you're an adolescent but for me I need a full on gym. Nothing against them though. read more

A great place to excersize your mind, body and soul. Equipped with an indoor pool is amazing along with a Basketball Court, Excersize Room and many classes and activies you can be invovled in. read more

My daughter takes swim classes there. I do a little work on the machines. The facility is very clean, but if you are there to wait for your kid to finish and dont want to work out, there is a very small and very crowded wait area with the worlds most uncomfortable metal benches. So I decided not to renew membership. read more

i debated on two or one stars, but settled on two, so that perhaps the Menino YMCA can improve and return to the four to five star rating that they very well would have deserved as some a year or two ago --Y, please stop the decline! This Y used to be very clean and run with the necessary yet respectful discipline that is necessary to have a nurturing environment where young, teens, adults, and older citizens can cavort and grow. But then we started seeing changes... the dedicated cleaning staff that worked continuously disappeared, and contractors began showing three times a day, then two --and the lockers and showers went from pristine to downright not ideal. Managers that were on top of things on evenings and weekends seem no longer around at those hours. Then the disorganization crept into the aquatics. The online schedule stopped being right. Then the club hours started to become fewer and fewer --now even after six months the wrong weekend closing hours are still shown on the door. The front desk is mixed --sometimes nice folks, but over the phone often clueless and occasionally nasty, giving you the wrong pool hours, closures, etc. The pool has also become noisy with a loud boombox. This Y was and has the potential to be such a great place but there really needs to be some reflection on making this a professional, first class gym. The West Roxbury Y just re-opened and it is very fine indeed, the original Y, in the South End is fantastic, and BSC Newton might not be as new as these others but has extremely attentive staff ---and the price of these is the same or just a bit over-- so the Menino YMCA needs to understand they need to return to their old standards to provide each member first class attention, be competitive and to service Hyde Park with the best that they can do. read more

I love this Y and it's luckily the cost one to my house. I mainly use the pool and it's always got room for lap swim and/or rec swim. Lots of kids but the pool is always clean and there are separate locker rooms!!! Non chlorine pool, to, it's a state of the art chemical balance or something that makes it a really pleasant experience. Thought it was salt but someone on staff told me it is not. Lots of fun stuff to play with for kids and adults, diving weights, kickboards, noodles, flippers, etc. On deck-sauna and steam room! Can't beat it! read more

This review is specifically for the little kid swim classes. We had taken a toddler swim class last year and were very happy with our instructor and the amount of progress our son made. He became more comfortable in the water, was able to swim a bit and loved going to swim classes. We were eager to sign up for the next level and see more progress. Unfortunately the entire experience was a waste of time and money. The main issue is the lack of consistency with teachers. Teachers were consistently late or never bothered to show up. One week the teacher who was actually assigned to our group (who was great but who only taught my son once) told me she wasn't even aware she had been on the schedule, which is why she missed the first week. One week the sub, who was so distracted and visibly annoyed that he had to cover the class, ended the 30 minute class 10 minutes early to provide assessments which would be required for the next registration period despite him never having seen these kids and only having them swim for a few minutes during the 20 minutes he was "teaching". Throughout the classes the teachers are constantly talking amongst themselves about how annoyed they are about teaching, how many kids are in the class etc etc. about how many kids are in the class, how they were annoyed/frustrated etc etc. I attempted to talk to the woman who claimed to be in charge of classes to no avail. She was dismissive and said "The class only costs $60, what do you expect". We, in fact, paid then non-member rate of $110 but even still, what is that supposed to mean? I tried contacting the main number to give feedback and was given an email address to submit feedback. I received a few email messages indicating that they would call and then a second saying that they had, in fact, called me despite me not having received any calls or messages. The pool is great and clean, which makes it even more of a shame that it is not being put to good use because of poor organization and lack of appropriate management. We will definitely not be returning. read more

Joined in March, loved that my work got a discount there and even without it, it's a competitive rate. I haven't been to a class I don't like, the facilities are well maintained and cleaned regularly. The pool looks wonderful, just haven't been in yet. I have been training with Sarah and she is great. I started off with the three training sessions they provide to new members and was hooked. I see her once a week for 30 minutes and it's very reasonably priced. She's been a great motivator and even though I haven't really noticed, she says I am getting stronger. The workouts are always a big challenge but I hadn't really noticed that the exercises she is giving me are actually harder as the weeks progress. Overall, I love this gym and it's got such a positive energy I actually look forward to going! read more

I love this gym, but when it comes to membership costs there are A LOT of screw ups. I get a discounted rate because I am eligible for a scholarship. However in February I was charged the full double membership of $60. My bill is supposed to be half that. So I spoke with the manager Brandon and he told me that my scholarship had expired. I asked him why I was not sent a reminder letter and he said that the company does not do that. I was supposed to keep the paperwork for when I signed up a year ago, SMH. So I renewed my scholarship and my new discounted rate would start the following month. That very next month, in March, I received a reminder letter saying that my scholarship was due to end that month. They had charged me the full membership price in February before my scholarship had even ended! They also sent me a reminder letter the exact thing that Brandon said they didn't do! But not only that the letter was written March 3rd but not postmarked until March 29th. So I had to make a another trip up to the YMCA and bring the letter to show them that they have charged me prematurely. Brandon said that he would make my May payment free ( my April payment was already due to pull). We'll see! I've also had months when the membership fee altered, usually by a couple of dollars or so. I love the YMCA and I'll definitely continue to be a member, but all this back and forth over billing issues are really ridiculous. Now I see why people pay 6 months to a year in advance. But I'm nervous to do that because I'm afraid that I'll be charged the 6 months and knowing the YMCA they will charge me again every month. So if you sign up at the Y or even if you're already a member, watch your bank statements and keep all your paperwork. You may need it. read more
