My husband and I were active, loyal members of Dedham Health for six years and during most of that time were very satisfied with the quality of classes and equipment. However, in November 2024 we had a bizarre experience. My husband was having a civilized conversation with a fellow member the day after the presidential election when suddenly the director of the fitness center broke in uninvited and launched into an unprovoked verbal attack based on false assumptions about his political views. After staying away for a year and a half, we recently considered rejoining because of a health need for specific classes that are not available elsewhwere. However, the management refused to speak to their employee about his bullying behavior or to mediate in any way. I would not recommend this club to anyone who expects to feel safe and respected. read more

I love this place! After my favorite club closed its doors due to covid, I felt lost and saddened with the thought of having to go back to the Y. But, as luck would have it my Weight Watchers new location meeting is held at Dedham Health and Athletic Complex. Lars spoke to my meeting about the 60/60 program. I had no intention of joining at first but it seemed like a good deal. I'm so glad I did! There are 3 swimming pools, the spa is fantastic, there evening and weekend water aerobics classes and I've never had to wait for cardio equipment even on weeknights because they have so many treadmills, ellipticals and bikes. The club is clean and well staffed. This club great for families, seniors, or GenX's like me! read more

I've been a member since the 1980"s and after being away visiting my family in Hawaii, there's no place better than DHAC. They offer so many options for health and fitness to their clients, and they just keep improving and building on what they're already providing. I have used the Physical Therapy that's offered in the pool for recovery. I have used the Salon for hair care. The fitness room is stocked with not only the weight and fitness equipment, but a caring staff to help you reach your desired goals. Child care, summer camp. swim lessons and a strong swim team for young kids and adolescents help families enjoy themselves and thrive. The care and quality of the staff is exceptional. While I was away, I visited other fitness clubs, and each time I was done with my workout, I thought I need a steam bath,sauna, and jacuzzi but unfortunately I wasn't home at my super club DHAC. Come on down and take a tour, you'll share in my enthusiasm over this fabulous athletic complex. I'm a new member of the gym itself, so this is going off my first impression. I've also read through some of the reviews (both good and bad). Many of the reviews are old and dated. (I've been a member of the Summer Club pool with my family for a couple of years). Pro - As many have pointed out, this is a CLUB and not a gym. The place is nice on the inside. Considering it's a club, the price seems fairly appropriate when compared to something like a BSC. The price falls very appropriately. If I wanted a Gold's or plant fitness, I'd pay 10 to 60 month, and I'd expect what I pay for. The interior style is a classic leather couch and finished wood vibe. Very comfortable. It's not sleek black and steel type place. The equipment is definitely new, and it is kept. I haven't seen any out-of-order signs. Pro - It offers an extensive array of things to do. From the gyms, spa, sauna, indoor track, classes like yoga, spin, pilates, HIIT, tennis racket, golf swing area, and more. There are tennis courts (see cons) and indoor rock climbing, a hair salon, martial arts dojo, massage therapy and associated treatments centers for rehab and more. I will note that a few things like martial art lessons or tennis lessons are separate costs. Most things that I've mentioned are included in your membership tho. Pro - The place is clean. I've been to other clubs where the locker rooms are dirty, unkempt, smell bad, broken, and neglected. This is not the case. I think this is important to note because it demonstrates the club keeps a standard. This seems true for the rest of the building and the gym areas as well. I appreciate this fact. Pro - Plenty of up-to-date equipment. I've gone early in the morning and at a few different times. I've never struggled. I once waited for a person to finish using something. It wasn't a big deal. I've experienced far worse at a YMCA or Gold's. Pro - Children and Youth activities. This is robust. I haven't fully explored it, but I've poked my head into that area, and it seems great. Unfortunately, I can't speak more directly about the offerings. Pro - The staff has been very helpful and friendly thus far. There are a few that seem busier than others. When I've had a question, I've just asked the person that wasn't as busy, and they were very nice and took the time to answer me. Staff are available, around and friendly. Pro - (Separate Costs) Outdoor Summer Club and Summer Camp. I want to mention them because the club is that BIG. There's a full waterpark with slides, enormous climbing structures, and tennis courts in the back, and you can watch kids and families play while on the treadmills. It's a cool way to zone out while burning calories. We do the Summer Club with some other families. Honestly, it's a hidden gem, and I feel it is cost appropriate. I can't speak to the Summer Camp experience. Cons - I would give this 5 stars except our experience with the Tennis courts. Even as members, we struggle to get a court. It's frustrating, as others have mentioned. On the weekend, my younger son wants to play. He's been driven off by some sort of program that is dominating the courts. The program is simply claiming all the courts and not leaving any available to the public. My wife asked last weekend why this was, and she said the person running the program became very defensive and told her to take it up with the director of programming. I will take his recommendation and speak to the director to understand and clarity. Unfortunately, I feel some of the other reviews are valid with their frustration in this area. As a well-invested member, I think we should have consistent access. As of now, I wouldn't even classify the courts as providing reasonably limited access. At best, it seems extremely limited access. It's an advertised feature to members, which understandably creates a degree of frustration. Cons - The rock climbing center is still down due to Covid. At this point, I believe we have been out of the woods from Covid, so I don't understand why it's not reopening. It's an also advertised feature, even if they just did limited hours on weekends or something. Cons - I feel like some of the facilities and areas are fully operational after Covid. I remember visiting this place pre-Covid, and the little Cafe was open and offering smoothies and things. It doesn't seem to be happening right now. I could also be missing the times when it is open. I joined the adult beginners swim lessons. The pool is excellent being salt water pool. The lessons started off well but there was no effort on the instructor's part to tailor or plan according to the individual's ability. One instructor, Miguel, was good to pay attention to each one's ability and teach accordingly. However he does not work there and was only substituting. Others weren't as good. Although there were only 1-2 or max 3 students on a given day, there was no attention to each student other than giving them a float to try. I have taken 2.5 sessions but came out learning nothing. One class was cancelled due to pool being closed for cleaning- no prior information or emails were sent to students. We all went for the class and were sent away with a promise of a refund for the canceled class- more than three weeks have gone by with no refund or email about such a cancellation. Very good facility but very bad management! quite disappointed! read more

This is in regard to adult tennis. They do not have 10 courts available at night. The back 4 courts are used by pros for the kids program as well as 2 main building courts. There are only 4 courts available from 7-10pm for all members. For instance November 30th, two weeks from now, the pros already have 6 courts booked. Members. can only book 6 days in advance. So it is a free for all to get those 4 courts. Tonight November 16th there were only 3 courts available to members because pros had all others. And on two of those courts you had a clinic with 15 members attending on one side. There is a barrage of balls coming over the nets while you try to play. After 20 years 4 of us decided tonight to find another tennis club, especially for 120.00/month plus courts fees, not worth it. read more

This is in regards to the karate classes. The classes themselves were decent, dependent on age. I would say it really is geared to younger kids to pre-teen, maybe an early teen. The scheduling varied from season to season. My suggestion, is the late teens should be earlier (like 3-5) or maybe even later like 7pm. Since they most likely would be able to transport themselves or find transportation easier than younger kids or pre-teens. I know younger kids are difficult to herd or get them to pay attention, but my comments are really about those in the 10 age range. My kids lost interest, specifically during covid remote classes as there was constantly 1 child who would be a huge distraction, running around talking about something not related to the class/session. So it made the sessions a waste of time. The instructors did their best, but in my opinion they should have spoken to the parent/guardian about the child being distracting and prevent them from attending if it continued. read more

Do not enroll your child in the swimming classes. The instructors are not consistent and their teachers keep changing. They confuse the child and the classes are overloaded with kids. There are usually 5 kids per class and one instructor. Given 30 minutes of instruction time, effectively your child only swims for 6-8 minutes. read more

I have had plenty of Physical Therapy before coming to DHAC. I thought I had excellent PT before. DHAC...is head and shoulders above the organizations that helped me with PT in the past. Recently, I tore a groin muscle and hamstring playing tennis....ouch!!! I was assigned to Willliam as my Senior Physical Therapist. The level of professionalism that I received from William and the Admin Staff, coupled with the extensive re-hab and workout machinery, provided me with the opportunity to accelerate my recovery while thoroughly enjoying the experience. I strongly recommend DHAC for PT and Spine re-hab issues. BTW, the athletic facilities are extensive, very clean, and well run. I should have joined this club years ago. read more

Read somewhere that the average new gym member lasts for 4 visits before dropping out. Since my latest activtrax workout page tells me that today will be my 26th workout since joining in January I think I've waiting long enough to submit a review ... I should list my bias first since at first glance DHAC is not really set up for people like me. It's incredibly huge, incredibly kid/family friendly (kid-only pools, water park, free daycare, indoor rock wall, etc.) and has an insane number of tennis courts that I'll never use. I'm an aging nerd suffering from a sedentary lifestyle consisting of spending all day with a laptop in my lap when I'm not on some plane heading to some other location where I'll eat bad takeout food and also spend my days hacking on a laptop. My fitness goals are: - Not die of a heart attack at age 36 - Gain some strength & flexibility - Be able to bend over and adjust snowboard bindings without sitting ... pretty minor goals right? DHAC has way more stuff than I'll ever use and is way more centered around kids & family things. This is what convinced me to join: DHAC Positives - Not snobby, not a meat market. Real people doing real exercise - Tons of resistance, free weights & cardio machines - Free personal training included with membership - ACTIVETRAX.COM !!!!! DHAC Negatives - Not the cheapest option around - Lots of pool/raquetsport stuff I'll never need - I could care less about family/childcare/etc. offerings The monthly fee is somewhat steep. They did take an instance 50% off the joining fee once I flashed my insurance card. They also have a special $60-for-60-days offer if you come with a doctor's referral note. I also got a discount off of the monthly fee because I come during non-rush hours. The people whining about long term contracts are wrong. There is no contract whatsoever. You pay a fee to join and a fee each month. After working out here for a few months I can tell you honestly the two main things that keep me going: (1) You get 6 personal trainer sessions when joining plus additional ones each quarter. This is fantastic for gym newbies like me who needed advice on what to do and how to go about it. I got assigned Jason L. who was excellent. He got me up to speed after about 4 sessions together and still pays attention to my progress & questions. (2) ACTIVETRAX.COM - I can't stress how awesome this online service is for techie people or anyone who would really like to have custom generated workouts ready and waiting for you each time you show up at the gym. This is probably the main reason I am approaching my 26th workout session - if it was up to me to pick the resistance machines I'd probably have gotten lazy and given up a long time ago. With activetrax I get a paper printout telling me *exactly* what machine to use, what weights to set, how many reps etc. Everything is tracked online and the workouts are targeted to your goals that you set initially (and weights are based on the result of an initial fitness test). For someone who is intimidated by weights & non-cardio machines activtrax.com is awesome. If you are at the DHAC taking a tour or something look for people carrying white plastic clipboards - those are people following their activtrax instructions. We are legion, heh. read more

I went to the Dedham Health for 14 years. I only stopped there because I moved to downtown Boston. I miss my health club. Yes, I could have joined a cheaper gym but I had wants for a very clean gym that would cater to my specific needs. The gym I got had very professional staff, lots of different classes, separate children's area, adult only changing/locker rooms, fitness for all types and separate adult pool. The DHAC was a great gym with great customer service but this last year I am very disappointed with the customer service by the staff both at the gym and especially at the summer club. One would think for the money one is paying to be treated with respect. The staff at the summer club always have a difficult time finding members in the system and waste ones time to enter and enjoy what one has invested plenty of money in. Dedham Health is a lifesaver for me. I am a regular in the aquafit and BASE classes, and also use the weight machines with some frequency and occasionally do yoga. I don't understand all the negative reviews. Apparently some people are never happy. I did notice same ageism in a couple of the reviews, so maybe for those people the sight of old folks like me is off-putting. Too bad, folks. We boomers are the largest generation, so it's nice to have a place where people over 60 can feel comfortable working out. Oh yeah, the price is high, but you get what you pay for. read more

I'll have to agree with many of the other posters on DHAC. I've been a member at probably 20 different gyms in my lifetime, so I'm no stranger to what's out there. I joined DHAC for the tennis, as I like to be able to play in the winter, too, and they have plenty of indoor courts. I kept my membership at Boston Sports Clubs, which is where I still do my non-tennis workouts. The tennis courts are pretty average, nothing special. The fitness center itself feels a bit "tired" to me. The equipment is fine, but the place looks like it hasn't seen a remodel since the 70s...with the prices they charge, I wonder where all the money goes. The prices...oh the prices. I pay almost $100 a month just for the membership, and then I also pay a court fee every time I want to play. My Boston Sports Clubs membership is half the price, lets me work out at a ton of different clubs around the city (one near work, and one near home), the equipment is nicer, and the facilities are MUCH nicer. You can do a lot better than DHAC. read more

I have been a member for 4 years, just relocated The adult pool could be cleaner hence my 3 star What is convenient about the pool is that it is always open and you do not have specific hours where you can swim, you can always do Lap swimming. It can be sometimes busy and the club really need to give a stricter policy for people showering before going in. Very few shower in before swimming. What s good is that you have free weight training session for members. They provide latest machines, and great selection with a lot of tv everywhere Many free classes from spinning to yoga great for kids, they have many activities while parents are working out, from gamin room to pool activities etc.. The price is ok reasonable for what they offer. My 3 star and not more is because of the pool could be cleaner (not so clean) and their non-sense policy about guests. They want to call themselves exclusive club, so to help achieve this they do not let anyone in unless if they a are signed in by a current member. What they want to do with this policy is to appear as "exclusive". Let us not Kid ourselves most of the members their insurance pay for this this makes it very affordable (for half of the members who pays an average of 50$ a month). For a person that use to be a member for 4 years (myself) then had to leave for relocation reasons and is visiting back Boston for couple of days a year and cannot use the club without having a current member signing him at the door is non-sense. It is not like I am a stranger, I was a member for 4 years!! I still should be able to pay for the daily fee and use the club for these few days a year. Although I do enjoy the sense of community and pools, the management staff is often rude and very unapproachable. You kind of get the sense that they think they are better then everyone else. Their policy that prevents you from bringing your own food is ridiculous on so many levels. One: I have a child with allergies. They have a doctor's note on file, and when they saw me give a sandwich to my son, and I explained my daughter had an allergy, they said I could only bring food for her. "Look honey, you eat this homemade sandwich while I go get something more fun and exciting for your brother at the snack bar." Two: This is a health club facility, correct? How healthy would it be to serve my family food prepared at the snack bar daily?? Three: It is not an inexpensive place to join. I can't add daily trips to their snack bar on top of all of that. This is not a country club where there is an expectation that you purchase a certain amount every month. It's a pool club. Bathrooms: Although the facilities are nice, we are having a problem because my oldest son is too old to be in the women's room to shower, but too young to send him in alone to the men's room to shower and they will not let you use the family facilities near the indoor pool. read more

This health club is pretty big. It's also kind of expensive - I think it's about $94 bucks a month or so for an individual membership, but I guess that's what a lot of other gyms are charging anyways. Initiation fees, too. Boo. They usually cut them in half for a week or two around January. They've got the standard health club fare, but here's what they have that a lot of clubs don't: Lots of indoor tennis courts - 10 or 12 or so, I think. Two swimming pools (one for kids, one for everyone else) Basketball court I mostly go for the tennis. Court time is $14-16 per hour. They've also got a lot of instructors. A lot of them are great, but Kyle Anderson is the most helpful tennis instructor I've ever worked with. He gives great tips, he pushes you exactly as much as you can handle, and he always puts a lot of effort into lessons (even group lessons). read more

This club is way too costly and it is outdated go up the street to lifetime it offers so much more that is including the outdoor pool with guest passes. The fees go up every single year. All the machines are to close together, there are constant ceiling leaks and in the summer time it is way too hot.... turn on the air conditioning! My wife and I have been members for the past 6 months. Very friendly staff, wide range of equipment, and plenty of class options. This is the only facility my wife has felt comfortable exercising at on a regular basis. The cardio theatre has everything you can ask for with a mix of Treadmills, elliptical, arc trainers, rowers, upright and recumbent bikes, stair masters and handicap accessible options as well. It is a very comfortable place to exercise. Healthy mix of all different levels of exercisers. For the price, definitely the best option around. If you are looking for a strongman/powerlifting environment I would not recommend, but their are three power racks and plenty of selectorized equipment. Only thing I'd add is I would like to see plate loaded pieces. Definitely recommend! read more

For a place that charges increasingly exorbitant monthly fees, plus a once-yearly fee of $39 on top of it, they should be open 365 days a year. Even Planet Fitness is open on holidays that DHAC is closed. The parking situation is ridiculous; the staff here does nothing about the elitist clientele who feel entitled to create their own spaces, parking perpendicular to cars that are parked in legal spaces, making it extremely difficult for those who follow the rules to get their vehicles out. God forbid you have to park 100 yards away before you work out. It's easier to inconvenience others! They do a good job of maintaining the equipment, but the ladies locker room is outdated, and has a funky odor. There are signs in the fitness center telling people not to drop the weights, but there's one in every crowd, and the staff NEVER does anything about it. There are so few options in the area for people who swim. To me, it was DHAC or the Needham YMCA. I tried the Y first... Hey no joining fee, $50 less/mo... But also no pool access and I paid for a class that was continuously cancelled. So... On to the DHAC... Lots of swim access - careful you don't melt in the water - but lousy access to the pools from locker rooms. I really do like the pools, it's the reason I'm a member but wow... Both at 86F? Your body can't cool down & no deck stop clocks. Seriously? They are $30, how awful would it be to add one or two. And drop the temp in at least one pool by a few degrees... There are 2 of them!! I wish the membership was tiered. I have no desire to use the tennis courts, climbing walls, and other such niceties. I want to swim, do cardio & some weights. The basics for triathlon training. I'm not impressed with the trainers that you get "6 sessions" with membership - if you need to cancel provide 24hr notice (standard) however good luck getting a message thru to your respective trainer. These folks do not respond to voicemail or email; and somehow your appointments are cancelled when you don't want them to. Obviously DHAC needs to work on this one. Bottom line: Given that they are the only scene in town, they will continue to get my buck. However I'm open to suggestions or just a new game coming to town! read more

I have been a member of Dedham Health and Athletic Complex for at least 15 years. I basically used the machines about 2 or 3 times a week. I am in a high risk group and could not attend due to Covid 19. I just called to ask about different levels of membership and let them know I need to cancel my membership because it is so expensive and I cannot use it now due to the virus. There was no "Thank you" for all of your years of membership; no, "Let's see if we can find out a way to help you stay with us given your many years's of membership." Also, I think I may have received one email from them during the entire pandemic. Gyms are in difficult straits now. You would think there would be more customer service, more loyalty to customers, more of an effort to retain a customer at lower cost since that customer has cost them very little or just plain more thanks. read more

DHAC offers me a convenient location to get my fitness on with the best trainers and instructors I have ever worked with! It has something for everyone at every level of your fitness journey! I've been a part of this DHAC family for 3 years and have accomplished so many of my fitness goals in the fitness center and in group classes! It is my home away from home and the best part of my day!!!! I've been to a lot of gyms but have never felt the sense of support, non-judgement, and family that I feel at DHAC! It is exactly what I've been looking for in a gym. Not happy about the recent membership increase. It would be nice if you actually gave your members something extra like towels in the locker rooms or added more classes throughout the day. I don't feel membership dues should pay for new floors, carpets or bathroom updates. Tons of wasted space in the gym too, it would be nice to have some space with louder music , or a little motivation, or a place that feels like a gym not a physical therapy appointment. It is a nice gym. It has everything you could possibly want: free weights, weight machines, cardio machines, swimming pools (adult and family/kids separate), group classes, tennis, physical therapy, sauna, steam room, hot tub, indoor track and I'm sure I'm missing more. I won't give it more than 3 stars since it never seemed to me like a high energy, motivating place to work out. The members during the day are all pretty much hitting 50+. The place will be dead at 8am and at 10am its more crowded since of the member age group they cater to. Plus they're known for physical therapy which I'm sure why a lot of them are there, and the discount for their age. When I started I got a 6-week, once a week meeting with a one of their exercise physiologists. You meet with them to tell them your goals but really most of their "personalized programs" are the same for very member as far as I've seen. Another downside to this club is when they have their group swimming classes. They take up half the pool while the other half is dedicated to senior citizens going .0001 mile an hour on their noodle. So much for lap swimming mid-morning. I wish they updated their group glasses, I feel like they've had the same ones forever. The big downside to this place for me was how it looked. They would constantly push high monthly rates and a joining fee but this place still looks straight out of the 80s. I would come here literally over 15 years ago for the indoor rock-climbing and the whole place looks EXACTLY the same. They have done some remodeling due to the new gyms around that are definitely competition. Its still a dark/low energy place to me to work out. I went there with my husband to sign up for the 60 days for $60. I have a back issue and my spine doctor and a friend recommended it. My husband also wanted to work on a medical issue. The sales person said we didn't qualify because we looked too fit and the 60 for 60 wasn't an introductory offer and that we would be bored. She then tried to sell us a regular membership. She never looked at our doctor's note. She didn't really listen and said since we had done exercise in the past we weren't eligible for the 60 for 60 program. Beware of their policies if you plan to sign your children up for classes. Our 4yr went to a demo karate class and loved it so we signed him. He then changed his mind and refused to go back. We should have read the fine print on the contract re. 30days written notice for cancellations. When our card was charged for the second month I called and asked for a refund. Spoke with a bunch of "managers" one of whom was kind enough to agree to refund the second month. Well it turns out she didn't have the authority to fulfill this promise. So we ended up paying $240 for nothing, not even one class. I understand that type of contractual agreement for a gym membership but it's completely unreasonable for kids activities. Ridiculously expensive gym and they just raised their prices to $130 a month plus a one time registration fee of $400. Not worth it at all for the price you get terrible customer service, place isn't clean and the contract isn't easy to cancel...much better gyms out there folks dhac needs to either change the way they operate or they'll go out of business. read more

Save your time and your money because I've never been to such a deceptive and disrespectful place in my life.They will send you all these things of deals $60 for 60 days special sign ups it's all baloney because none of that is available unless you meet special requirements and trust me you won't they just want to get you in the door so they can sell you a ridiculous package that you will need to hire an attorney to get out of. they will continue to take l your money for 90 days after you've decided to drop your membership because the place is too dirty and management is a joke, yet I still considered signing up for a family membership and another couple we knew were going to sign up.. but after being treated like we were lfrom the ghetto by the used car salesman that didn't know I make more money in a day than he does in a month, I believe the steroids have gone to his brain because he does not know how to make a sale, save yourself the aggravation and go to Planet Fitness or any other gym.
