Even driving the road directly after you get off the ferry, it has such great views. I think the town used to be a fort, but don't quote me on that. It's a very very nice town. It does seem to be a town of "more tenured" folks. Also, I think this may be the hub for Island County because there is a jail and some social services for Island Co. there. I pulled over and rolled my window down and took a few pictures and a video. It tilted its head when I talked to it and it ran off when another vehicle drove by. Cattle Point is managed thru the Bureau of Land Management and is one of the features constituting the San Juan Islands National Monument. Some information about the area can be found on the San Juan Islands National Monument website in their Monument Site Catalog. The land abuts the Cattle Point Natural Resources Conservation Area run by the Department of Natural Resources. To the south is the Strait of Juan De Fuca. To the north is private land. I parked in the small pull-out by the trail leading to lighthouse. There are a few signs along the trail to the lighthouse with information about Cattle Point and its history and wildlife. I encountered four deer while I was here. Three grazing that made their way north and one grazer that made its way east and into the brush. The views are breathtaking and reminded me a bit of some of the views in the Outer Isles of Scotland. The cloudy sky made the walk enjoyable and I liked the backdrop of grey. Peaceful place to explore.

I've never been to the annual tulip festival, so did not know about this charming town. But I sure am glad we stopped by here. La Conner is a small town by the Swinomish Channel in Skagit County. It really has that waterfront charm to it, with small, local businesses that line down the main street, with patio dining that looks out to the dock and boats. There were many areas for public seating, with tables and chairs set up by the public boardwalk. I loved how historic the buildings are here! Much of the buildings have plaques that indicate its original purpose and the year it was established. We also walked behind the business centre of town where a residential area is, and loved the Victorian-style homes here. You just don't see many houses like that in urban areas, reminding you of that small town flavor. We are already planning to spend a weekend here sometime! Because of its tourism from the annual tulip festival, the town has some lodging options and fun activities for visitors and locals. Glad to have to stopped by this charming part of the state.

It also seems like a connection to a different time; a bygone era when we chose paper over pixels, cute cards over keyboards, and real connection over virtual reality. Perhaps today, as our society currently sits in isolation, a post office feels a little less distant in the past. Yes, a post office is a place where you send and pick up greetings from afar, and for a just a moment, that stamp connects your minds and hearts. Maybe you send a postcard from a trip. Maybe it's a letter from an overseas assignment. Or maybe it's a birthday card, painted with beautiful daffodils, or daisies, or dahlias; just to tell someone that you're thinking of them, you're glad they're doing well, and to wish them the very happiest of everythings. Yes, this post office has all of that charm. Located on "20 Jack and Jill Place," you couldn't ask for a more picturesque place. Perched on the incline headed out of Deer Harbor on Orcas Island, it houses just a few PO Boxes for this tiny community. There are three post offices on the island, actually, and it says something about my affinity for snail mail that I've been into two of them, and been by the third. I actually use the one right up the road from the ferry most often, as I sometimes send cards to friends on my way off the island. Especially today, I'm thinking about this post office and that connection it makes between two people.
